Grape Hill is for people who GET IT. Nothing else around is like Grape Hill. The inner artist & photographer & chef inside you will come out and want to play! Imagine a secluded beach with mile upon mile of panoramic views, now have it all to yourself, add cool interiors, a fine kitchen, and lots of great things to do within minutes. Try to book well in advance- we have to do that so we know we can stay in our own home! We'll be rebating those VRBO/Expedia fees back to you after your stay.
Rolling Palouse hillsides, open vistas, and seclusion. Simplicity to bring our shoulders down. True REST, the kind that recharges the batteries with JOY. This special spot keeps altering perceptions...such a huge supply of positive charge. When we visited Sedona we heard lots of talk about energy vortexes. Maybe Grape Hill is one of these?
It can be really hard to leave Grape Hill even for fine restaurants and lovely wine seven minutes away.
The drive in to the center of Walla Walla is nothing. No bother at all to go wine tasting and then come home to change clothes and be right back in Walla Walla. Probably no more than going to your grocery store. The biggest difference is that you get to Grape Hill and everything slows down.
Here, you can hear silence, and then that silence is filled up with sounds you could have missed...a hawks wing, a tractor off in the hills miles away. You see the light as it changes constantly and watch the movement of the wind on the fields. There is Wi-Fi and music and TV and hawks and pheasants and deer on the hillsides.
So...stay upstairs in the king bed or downstairs in the queen, there are joys to discover in each. Great reading spots abound, plenty of places to set your wine glass.
The house is built with eight-inch framing and high insulation factors for green energy efficiency and passive heating/cooling. Except in high summer or winter months it is seldom necessary to turn on either heat or ac, but both are on automatic central systems. Winter months are especially gorgeous and the cold weather provides a perfect reason for enjoying the fireplace.
After finishing building the initial housing structure late in 2007, we decided to occasionally rent and share this stunning beauty with others. It has gone a little wild, more than planned, but sharing the joy is good stuff.
(Please note that we love kids, but children and smoking inside are absolute no-goes. BTW...no discounted rents ever on first time rentals...please do not make offers. When you come back again, and you probably will, that's when we are happy to extend a hand. One other note- vineyard and wheat farming will include the occasional planting or harvest activity. Our vineyard manager or farm manager will also be by occasionally to check on grapes and wheat. They have no access for inside the house; you might catch a glimpse of them working.)
100 mile+ views changing constantly with the light and the weather. Grape Hill is custom and unique in every sense. Over the next several years, the house and farm will continue to evolve toward a long-term vision that continues to reinforce grace with this special landscape. Our first wine went into bottle in May, 2008. Big Table was built out in the fields. Call it our Grape Hill slice of Provence...
From miles out, Grape Hill fits in the landscape, a metal industrial agricultural building amongst the fields; perfectly normal sight set in the farm country. We didn't want to make the house the focus, not here at such a special spot.
Once inside, things change.
Think of a chic Tribeca loft or a San Francisco modern. Clean and minimalist, but warm and unpretentious, too. Polished concrete floors and 19 foot ceilings. Eight inch moldings. Two big baths with cherry vanities. A double-head granite shower upstairs in the big loft, an over-sized granite tub with shower downstairs. DVD players/LCD TVs with movie selections in both sleeping areas. A new TV in the living room for hanging out and enjoying a special movie. Cherry cabinets, granite and glass, stainless steel appliances and unique lighting arrangements...and who would guess it?
Views in every direction are framed by tall windows looking out to the Blue Mountains, Dry Creek, and hundred year old farmsteads in the valley below. You can spend hours on the patio or walking the fields day and night. Amazing stars and awesome sunsets. Bring your passion. Bring new recipes to try. You're in for something special!
Sue and I live on an old horse-breeding property in Bellevue. We raised three delightful kids there and now watch in awe as they are turning into young adults. Sue teaches elementary school, I sell property, write, and make wine. No plans for a winery, just great joy in bringing lovely flavors from the little vineyard.
Mike & Sue purchased this estate in 2003
I looked over land in the San Juans, in Kittatas County, and all over the NW for fifteen years. Nothing ever quite hit home. Sue and I came over to Walla Walla with our boys for a soccer tournament back in 1999. We decided between games to take a drive out to a new winery called Spring Valley where we met a winemaker named Devon and enjoyed the amazing wines that he was pulling out from barrels from his first vintage. After warming to wine and conversation, we drove around the Palouse and were awestruck by the rolling scenery. Three years and many trips later, we had still not found the right spot. So, Sue and the kids and I wrote letters to every land owner with at least fifty acres all around the special landscape we have come to love. One hundred and twenty five letters yielded nine responses, six telling us about rich family histories going back to the 1800s and declaring that they will never sell. Three considered selling, but only one determined to let me see the property. That one property was Grape Hill. I knew we wanted it the minute I saw these views. But there was much more to getting the OK than just writing a check. And that is another story!
At Grape Hill, optimism breaks past all the negative news and overcomplicated stuff we let into our lives. Shoulders come down, time slows down, art and poetry replace demands and we find ourselves phoning old friends. Wood fires and wine, sunsets and smiles replace tensions and revitalize our souls. This is a magical place, one of these rare places on the planet that open the senses and reward us for being alive. Over in Sedona they talk all the time about energy vortexes. Well, I don't know anything about that subject, but maybe Grape Hill has the properties about which they speak. We are so out there and away...but only five minutes from the city.
We have just returned from a weekend with dear friends in Walla Walla. We were attracted to Grape Hill by Mike and Sue's description, and by other guests' reviews. We were not disappointed. It is a unique property, with 360 degree views of soothing landscape. The formula is that of a winner...very busy folks drive 5 hours across the state and arrive at a sanctuary of rest and renewal. Restaurants and Wineries are in close proximity but neighbors are scarce. The rolling hillside provides a fine setting to dine in or out, given the notion. Thank you for your willingness to share your lovely home.
We had a wonderful time and the property is just stunning. Worth the trip!
We have been to this place before, it is truly magnificent. The absolute peace and quiet and breath taking views. As for the home itself and amenities, they have everything we needed as we like to cook and entertain friends. The rooms and comfy and everything is so open and inviting. The owner is always obliging and and prompt in his response. Great experience, totally recommend if you want to relax with that good bottle of wine.
Our foursome really enjoyed our stay at Grape Hill. The place was very well appointed and comfortable. Mike was very helpful in introducing us to his home and the local area.
It is a wonderful place for two couples. We enjoyed relaxing in the great room and taking in the beautiful views. I was fun to stay in the countryside and Mike and Sue's rental is just a quick 4 mile drive into town.
It was hard to leave. Mike and Sue's place is so peaceful and beautiful!
Grape Hill is very special ! The house cleverly looks like a working outbuilding from the driveway so that your eye focuses on the awesome view which transcends a peacefulness . Inside, the house is beautifully designed with every comfort thought of and the views are spectacular. Well equipped and very comfortable in every way. We highly recommended it !
We celebrated a friends milestone birthday in Walla Walla and selected Grape Hill as our accommodation. We were not disappointed. It's even better than advertised. It's close enough to Walla Walla, but once at the house, you feel like you're in the middle of no where and can see for miles and miles. So beautiful. The home itself was high on the cool factor. Very well designed, modern and comfortable. Being a stickler for my sleep, we found the beds to be very comfortable, using hotel bedding and great pillows. We are excited to go back in the summer and try out the outdoor shower, and sit by the fire pit sipping wine.
Thanks also to Mike and Sue for allowing us a late check out so that we could watch the Seahawks on the big screen TV. Bummer we lost, but who knew you could get a penalty for hugging!
More than 100 Wineries are within a short drive. For a really fun day of tasting you may even want to hire a limo. There are also several day spas nearby. Foodies can plan for real fun. We are happy to assist with our own reviews of local eateries.
