My wife and I purchased and renovated this apartment in July, 2014. We are both US citizens but are now living in London. She is an architectural art historian and on the faculty of the Courtauld Institute of Art and I work for a global software company (SAP) with a focus on Risk Management.
While we have travelled extensively around the world we had only 'discovered' Lisbon 3 years ago and immediately fell in love with the city's rich history, wonderful architecture, great food and extremely friendly people. That coupled with great weather for much of the year makes this apartment an ideal location for exploring not only Lisbon but all that Portugal has to offer.
Richard Harmon purchased this apartment in 2014
We have just purchased (July, 2014) and renovated this truly unique apartment in the centre of Lisbon for our own enjoyment as well as for holiday rental. As a result we have furnished this apartment to a very high standard for real enjoyment and relaxation.
Baixa is ideally located for easy access to everything Lisbon has to offer and there is much to see and do within easy walking distance from our apartment. As you can see from the few pictures, the spacious layout and architectural features makes it a unique apartment in Lisbon.
While you are within a 7-10 min walk to Bairro Alto you are not impacted by the all night partying that goes on there! So a restful sleep is possible.
The pictures tell the storey of this spacious and unique apartment and located in the historic center of Lisbon.
We absolutely loved this apartment! It is modern and spacious and incredibly well located. The owner and property manager were accommodating and flexible and provided us with great recommendations. We are used to staying in hotels and were concerned with the loss of the concierge, what to do with our bags when arrived before standard check in etc. None of this was an issue. The only minor issue we had was the lack of AC in the 2nd bedroom our teens stayed in but there was a fan. The apartment only has AC in the master bedroom. Would definitely stay here again.
The apartment is fully equipped and located in a good neighborhood to visit Lisbon. The parking is conveniently close by. Cristina, the administrator, was very helpful and accommodating.
I agree with almost everything said in the favorable review. Especially Christina and Richard by email are a joy to work with.
Of course Lisbon is the city of hills and a challenge to anyone with mobility problems . I have a bad knee right now and have to use a cane. The entrance on Madalena is about 1/2 way between the top and bottom of that hill and probably at the steepest point. First there is the door into the building and then a 2nd door to stairs up to the apartment. Because the door opens inward it can be a challenge getting up the stairs high enough so you can close the door. Same thing going down , you have to use a key to open the door even when you are inside the apartment and then slide around the door and out the entrance to close the door.
I managed all right but I mention this only so someone who dies not want that particular challenge is aware.
Apartment is furnished beautifully. The washer/ dryer combo works great. satellite tv and 2 good sized showers.
Once you get down the Hill some of the best squares are right there.
Highly recommended with just that one caveat.
We are four adult friends who recently spent a wonderful long weekend at Madalena House in Lisbon. The apartment was beautifully furnished, exactly as in the pictures, and has all of the amenities one could need, such as good sheets, very complete kitchen, great bathrooms and lots of space. In addition there were some special details such as a printer for your use and a designer wine rack with local wines for your use if you wish to purchase them. Richard also provides a very complete list with suggestions for nearby restaurants, shopping and sightseeing. There is a supermarket just around the corner to pick up the basics on arrival. We tried several of his suggestions and found them to be excellent, especially one restaurant just down the street which had great Portuguese cuisine. The apartment is ideally located for those who like to walk to all the main attractions of Lisbon and convenient to visit the other nearby neighborhoods. We were met by Cristina at arrival and departure and she was lovely, offering to help with anything we needed. We would definitely recommend this apartment to all those looking for real comfort in their accomodations. We will be back, Richard. Thanks.
We have just returned from a very pleasant break in Lisbon. The apartment and its central location really added to the enjoyment of our stay.
The apartment is light and spacious and really nicely furnished. It is quiet at night with a little road noise during the day. It is walking distance from all the main attractions and from many shops and restaurants. If you wanted to cook there is all the equipment you could need.
I would definitely go back and recommend this apartment to families and couples.
This apartment has been totally updated as described. It is simply but beautifully appointed with comfortable furniture, beds, dishes, glassware, etc. The apartment was clean and well-cared for. Cleaning supplies were provided and we put the washer/dryer to good use after two weeks of traveling! Christina greeted us as planned and helped by making taxi arrangements for one of our party with a 3 am departure. The owner provides written instructions for everything and recommendations for shopping and eating in the neighborhood -- we especially loved Velho Macedo, a smalll restaurant just down the street that serves delicious traditional Portugese food. Located in the Baixa area, it was easy to explore Afalma and Chaida districts from the apartment -- even an easy walk up the hill to St. George's castle and down to the waterfront. We had just one unfortunate experience -- a very loud party at a neighboring apartment on Saturday night that kept us awake until 4:30 in the morning. It was only the one night -- Christina assured me later that this was highly unusual. There was also a lot of street noise on Saturday night, but Sunday night was much quieter. Overall, it was a great place to end our trip and we would recommend it to others!
Madalena House is located in Biaxa - the heart of historic Lisbon. The apartment is located at the blue dot with a few local landmarks identified in the map below. Within 200 meters is a public parking garage, the main grocery store and the Castle elevator. Being on Rua da Madalena enables easy access to all the major sites. The two major subway lines and the famous #28 tram are all within a 2-5 minute walk. Rua da Madalena is a relatively quiet, residential street situated below Castle St George, on the East side of Biaxa. You are also within a few minutes walk to the famous Santa Justa Elevator and the new Design Museum (MUDO).
Baixa is the historic center of the city with many of the buildings dating back to the late 1700s. Baixa sits in a valley/plateau that lies between the two main plazas of historic Lisbon at its Northern and Southern ends and hills to on its Eastern and Western sides. To the East of the apartment lies St George's Castle (the elevator is only 200 meters away) and the historic but hilly Alfama district (the oldest remaining part of Lisbon and the Moorish center). To the West of Baixa lies Chaido and Barrio Alto. Chaido is hilly and has many international designer shops and Barrio Alto is the area where you will find over 100 bars & restaurants that pretty much runs all night long with a crowded and loud street life but fun to visit in the evening.
If this is your first visit to Lisbon then I just wanted to let you know that you will find your stay being more affordable than most other major European cities. For instance, the 15-25 min taxi ride from the airport (4.2 miles) is only 10-13 euros depending upon the traffic and the route. This also applies to food and restaurants.
