Photos and Description of this 4 bedroom holiday cottage in Bodmin - The Gardenhouse

This recently modernised Gardenhouse with its own camellia and magnolia filled walled garden is between Bodmin Moor and the rugged north Cornish coast. Menkee is a beautiful listed Georgian farmhouse with stunning views set 200m from the B3266. Free WiFi.

Accommodation includes 3 sitting areas 1 of which has the sleep/sofa and main TV, a spacious dining and kitchen area with dishwasher, TV, washer, fridge/freezer, bathroom with loo & shower with loo. The master bedroom has a king sized bed and the two other bedrooms each have 2 single 3 ft beds. Central heating.

A high chair, cot and pram available on request.

The patio area includes a table & chairs for meals, sunchairs, gas BBQ and wood burning brazier.

Fashionable Rock and a selection of spectacular beaches are within 10 miles as is a choice of golf courses. The Camel Trail for cyclists is 3/4 m and Eden Project is 15 miles. Easy access to A30. Croquet and playful dogs.

Cornish Gardens: The owners, Gage and Liz Williams, can give advice on gardens to visit with the best time of year between March and June for camellias, magnolias and azaleas at Caerhays, Trebah, Lanhydrock, Trewithen, Tresco in the Scillies - a day trip by helicopter, Antony, Cotehele, Pencarrow and others. The Eden Project and Lost Gardens of Heligan are also about 30 minutes away.

Activities & Bookings: On request, the owners can send you an Activities Sheet showing what there is to do and see and giving telephone numbers for early bookings for sailing, riding, fishing for salmon and sea trout in the nearby Camel or lake fishing for trout, coastal and Bodmin Moor walking, cycle hire for the Camel Trail (1 mile) and elsewhere, water skiing, surfing lessons and advice on where to shop, cinemas etc. With notice, we are prepared to help with dropping off or picking up walking parties. Babysitting can also be arranged.

Gage and Liz Williams will send by e-mail an 'Activities' brochure to help plan your holiday and make early reservations at restaurants, pubs, water skiing, tennis etc. They can also e-mail you a map and directions. They can help by making reservations on your behalf. In 2006, Sainsbury's opened a supermarket in bodmin in addition to Bodmin's Asda and Morrisons stores. There is an excellent mini-mart 2 miles away at St Kew Highway with its own bakery, ideal for picking up a picnic en route to a wide choice of north coast beaches. Please bring beach towels.

Lorraine and murray's,relaxing break.

My wife and I went to stay with Gage and liz and Teasle the springer and Tiggy the terrier. We are dog lovers and will not stay away in the U.K if our little springer spaniel "Shelley " is not with us.Gage and Liz made our stay very relaxing and comfortable ,Gage was a superb host and made our choices on our break very easy with his local knowledge of restaurants and local pubs ,even making bookings for you if you required!Liz was a wonderful cook and host and together with the little dogs ,made our stay very pleasant indeed. Our little dog is now blind and will need a pleasant and safe place to stay when we visit our Cornish family again and I can honestly say we will go back to Menkee again as it is a superb place to stay .Menkee is a clean and very relaxing place to stay in Northern Cornwall and is good value for the standard of accomodation.

North Cornwall delight

  • 4 of 5

If you are looking for a 3-4 bed accommodation in the North of Cornwall then this is the place.

Gage and Liz were fantastic hosts, incredibly friendly and helpful. They also have 2 beautiful dogs who we all became very fond of (Tess would even wait for us to return from our days out and was such a lovely sight to see on our return). You can actually see a picture of Tess in the main photo.

The Gardenhouse is full of rustic charm so if if you are looking for chic and pristine this probably isn't the place for you. Gage and Liz live in the main house and the Gardenhouse is next door. There are 2 twins, 1 double and a snug room which has a sofa bed. Plenty of kitchen utensils, bath towels, sheets etc. Ample parking and beautiful gardens over looking rolling fields.

20 minute drive to Port Issac, Padstow etc. and some stunning beaches.

We am sure will return on our next trip to Cornwall.

Thank you both for a lovely few days.

Natalie, Rich, Lena and Jing

The Gardenhouse, in the grounds of Menkee, is one mile due east of St Mabyn village which has its own pub, shop and beautiful medieval church. Menkee is just to the west of the B3266 Bodmin to Camelford road and 3 miles from the A30 using the Helland turn off. It's set in rolling farmland with views towards the north coast. There is a wide choice of food from pub grub - St Mabyn Inn & Restaurant are highly rated - to Rick Stein in Padstow (11 miles) and leisure centres at Bodmin and Wadebridge (5 miles). At Hengar (3 miles) there is a country club with tennis and indoor pool where visitors are welcome. The SW Coastal pathway, Camel Trail (1 mile from here), Bodmin Moor and Saints' Way all offer varied hiking trails. A full activity sheet with booking details for riding, golf and water sports is available on request. Asda, Tesco and Morrisons (five miles), village shop + ATM 1.4 miles.

Other Activities: Lanhydrock, Pencarrow Houses. Bodmin Steam Train. Camel Valley Cycle Trail. County Regimental Museum and Bodmin Jail.

Golf: Ideally located for golfers especially during the autumn, mild winter and spring months when Cornwall's 11 links golf courses remain dry underfoot and uncrowded. Strongly recommended are St Enodoc (36 holes where we are both members - designed by James Braid 115 years ago - at Rock (10 miles) - recently rated the 23rd best course in the world by Golf World, Trevose - rated 59th best in UK in Golf Monthly, Newquay, Perranporth - another James Braid course, Bude, Lelant and Carlyon Bay. Further afield are both Saunton and Westward Ho! St Kew Highway (2.5 miles) has a 9 hole course and practice range. There are also superb inland courses such as St Mellion - 36 holes (Jack Nicklaus designed), Lanhydrock, Bowood and Tehidy. We can help with bookings. WiFi. We have two charging points for Electric Vehicles.

Notes:
Big favourites are Tess, our Springer Spaniel, and Trebah our black labrador who love visitors and especially children. Boogy boards for Polzeath, Constantine and Tregardock beaches can be borrowed and bicycles can be hired in Wadebridge for the Camel Trail which passes close by at Hellandbridge. We can offer two adult bikes. We can advise on walks, historic houses, golf (we both play St Enodoc), EdenProject, Helligan and other great gardens, eating out and art & pottery galleries. The Gardenhouse garden with its camellias, magnolias and azaleas is at its best from Jan to Jun and is a private sun trap. The accommodation and bathrooms are all upstairs and can be accessed using either the outside starred entrance or the internal wide flight of stairs - hence suitable for elderly but not ideal for wheelchairs. Please bring beach towels. Clothes can be tumble dried in the farmhouse. Broadband internet access and Sky TV by arrangement with the owners in the main house
