Description

Photos and Description of this 2 bedroom holiday apartment in Mogliano

Apartment on farm with exclusive use of swimming pool, sleeps 5, own terrace.

L'Oliveto is a farm in an olive grove set on its own hill in a tranquil valley five minutes from Mogliano, in the heart of rural Le Marche. The self-catering apartment is on the ground floor with two bedrooms, a large terrace and views down to the swimming pool amongst the olive trees and out across the valley. The English owner and her Italian husband live in an apartment on the property with access from the opposite side of the house. There is a large productive orto (vegetable garden) and guests are encouraged to help themselves to fresh produce, tomatoes all through the summer as well as aubergines, salad, zucchini, peppers, basil and herbs. Lunch and supper can provided on request. The owners can give detailed advice and information on the area. The apartment, being on the ground floor, is delightfully cool and quiet in the summer and completely private.

The Cantina: The Cantina has been restored ready for the season of 2008. Accessed through the garden it offers a cool space for meals. Guests can book full board, prices on request, or order meals during their stay and pay at the end of the holiday. There is a standard charge for all meals, of €12 per person for lunch and €17 per person for supper. The food is all prepared on site, using local recipes and local ingredients. Prices include wine to be served at both lunch and supper.

About Tamsin Hickson

I was born in South Africa, left at 22 to live in the UK and then in 2003 came to Italy with my sons and our ginger cat. I restored the house to create a rural idyll, where we have been receiving guests since 2004. Our family has expanded since I married a local Italian and my father came to join us in Italy.

Tamsin Hickson purchased this apartment in 2003

Why Tamsin Hickson chose Macerata

Parts of our house are two hundred years old. In the nineteen forties it housed 45 members of the same family, eating meals in shifts. It is a happy house, bathed in sunshine all year round, with beautiful views of Mogliano.

What makes this apartment unique

The atmosphere of our valley is unique and the house itself offers a tranquil place for a holiday, with the option of finding out about rural Italian life, whilst eating our home grown vegetables, our olive oil and trying the Prosecco from the north of Italy which we bottle at Easter every year.

Italy as Italy should be.

  • 4 of 5

Staying at Oliveto is akin to travelling back in time. Sat on the patio looking out over nothing but countryside, whilst a turn of the head allows you to gaze up at the beautiful town of Mogliano, you feel a real bond with the environment. An area unspoilt by either heavy industry or tourism, this is Italy as Italy should be.

With a strong reliance on our Italian dictionary and phrase book, we would venture in to the traditional shops in Mogliano, and buy our produce fresh each day. Further afield lie the bigger supermarkets, but we had very little desire or need to visit these.

Mogliano has the perfect town centre, where the air of community pervades the environment. Happily sat outside the open-air pizzeria, watching more and more local families appear as the clock ticked ever closer to midnight. Never once did we feel unwelcome, and our children happily ignored the language barrier to play with the children of the local families that descended upon the square.

Back at the apartment, our first trip to Oliveto felt quite strange, as the apartment is adjoined to the owners house. For some this might not suit, but for us they helped make the holiday that much better - inviting us to eat with them on occasion in their cantina, and offering on the spot guidance as to places to go and see. More like staying with family friends, but friends that do not impose their presence on you.

It is the only place that we have stayed at where our children (11,9,7) could truly be children. With no flashing lights and entertainment directly on your doorstep, they soon learnt to entertain themselves - swimming, exploring, and even playing Cowboys and Indians (a past-time I had thought was long forgotten) - a real pleasure to witness, as we were able to truly relax without worrying about their wellbeing.

We enjoyed our stay so much that we did not hesitate to book again, and have spent two summers now enjoying all that Oliveto, the town of Mogliano and the region of Marche have to offer.

We look forward to going back again, and would not hesitate to recommend Oliveto to friends and family alike.

Peace and Tranquility

  • 4 of 5

Ideal for the three of us. Comfortable beds - spacious bathroom with a shower that had plentiful hot water. Adequate kitchen enabling us to produce some fantastic alfresco lunches! Owners generosity was stupendous and they kindly gave us free access to the garden where we picked lettuce, tomato, peppers, aubergine, chillies and our favourite - zucchini flowers! Wild oregano, thyme, rosemary and bay leaf growing in and round the 100 year-old olive trees from which a very inviting hammock was waiting! Lovely pool within 5 minutes of our front door - very secluded and beautifully maintained. A very warm and inviting property so no hesitation to recommend to others!

Get away from it all

  • 5 of 5

We fell in love with the place as soon as we arrived. Rustic but well appointed, the house and the surroundings are instantly relaxing. Tamsin and Aldo were wonderful, warm hosts, insisting not only that we help ourselves to the vegetable garden but even inviting us to Ferragosto dinner with their friends and family. Our 2 year old loved the freedom to run around and explore, visiting the chickens every morning and you could see her actually learning to chill out and slow down her usual frenetic toddler pace. If in August, and you're prone, just make sure you pack the mozi repellent, I'm sure the same goes for anywhere in central Italy.

The house is a 5 minute drive from Mogliano, with two supermarkets, cafes and a weekly market. At the top of the road is a trattoria where we got great take-away pizza one night.

In less than an hour's drive you can be at the sea. We recommend Sirolo (follow signs to the spiaggia urbani). Park at the top, 5-10 minute walk down and shuttle bus back up. Get there in the morning and book a table at the main fish restaurant on the beach. We also had a lovely day driving into the Sibilini and spent the afternoon at one of the lakes.

We would heartily recommend Tamsin's house and we would love to go back.

Italiaanse leven!

  • 4 of 5

Wonderful place on earth

  • 5 of 5

L'Oliveto is five minutes from the lively small town of Mogliano, with five bars, several restaurants, a weekly market and fiestas throughout the summer. Macerata is the nearest city, twenty minutes away, with an amphitheatre for opera in the summer, a busy shopping area and museums and galleries. The countryside is dotted with hilltop towns, each with it's own distinctive character and beautiful historical centre. The local artists are Lorenzo Lotto and Crevelli, Mogliano has a Lorenzo Lotto but the best is to be seen in Monte San Giusto, twenty minutes from Mogliano. The Sibillini Mountains are forty minutes from L'Oliveto and offer skiing in the winter. There are wildflower meadows in the Piano Grande and beautiful walks all year round. The Adriatic coast is forty minutes from L'Oliveto, with child-friendly beaches and restaurants offering delicious seafood. A Franciscan monastery, Abbadia di Fiastra, is ten minutes away, with walks and cycle tracks. To find out about life at Oliveto look at the owner's blog, catching larks dot com. There you will find photographs, stories of local life and enough detail to give you an idea of the quality of a holiday in this rural yet fascinating spot, where you can relax under the olive trees, or visit medieval hilltop towns and cities, driving through countryside that enchants at every corner.
