Overview

About the property

House, 4 Bedrooms + Office, 3 Baths, (Sleeps 8)

The Central Coast is the 'undiscovered' gem of California. This area is reminiscent of Tuscany (by the sea). Golden Hills, thousands of acres of vineyards, majestic seas and sleepy beach towns, an up-and-coming 'foodie' region, with artisan olive oil, cheese-making, lavender farms and many fine wineries and tasting rooms. The area is renowned for the recreation available, with two State Parks nearby, beach and lake activities, horseback riding, hiking, and several notable golf courses. Lots of California history with out-of-the-way places to discover and enjoy.

Our home is located in the western hills of Atascadero, ten miles from the widely acclaimed Paso Robles Wine region, and twenty miles from the cities of San Luis Obispo (CalPoly University) and Morro Bay. Hearst Castle is a beautiful 40 minute drive. We are mid-way between Los Angeles and San Francisco, and about a two hour drive to either Santa Barbara, Monterey or San Jose/'Silicon Valley'.

Our home sits on a hill, surrounded by hundred year old oak trees, with extensive decking and patios overlooking the western hills and colorful sunsets. The property consists of approximately three acres with private drive, and a fenced pasture surrounding the front of the house currently used for horses.

While the area is quite beautiful, we have taken a special interest in making our home not only comfortable for us - but for our guests, too. The house is approximately 3,300 square feet with 3 bedrooms and a master suite, three bathrooms, an office/art room, and open great room, overlooked by a spacious and gourmet kitchen. French doors line the western walls of the house, offering access to the exterior decks and beautiful views. Much of your time will be spent outdoors on the decks, reading a good book, listening to music (outdoor speakers), or visiting and dining al fresco.

The master suite is located at the extreme south end of the house perched on the edge of the hill overlooking the golden hills. French doors provide access to a small, secluded patio and expansive views. The suite has recently been redecorated in tones of blue/grey with a built in gas fireplace, Brass king-sized bed, and a 42' inch wall-mounted plasma TV with satellite, DVD,and IPOD dock/speaker. This bed as all others in the house are made with luxury linens and crisp, fresh duvet covers. The bathroom has a jetted tub, shower, pedestal sinks and custom tile. We love this room and have taken care to make it a special retreat.

Next is a second and third bedrooms with queen-sized beds and view out over the front garden roses and rosemary plants. One room has satellite TV, too. A second bath with tub and shower is located across the hall with easy access to these two bedrooms.

Further down the hall is the true entry to the house, with the great room and office on a step-down level. The great room and office both face west and open with french doors onto their private decks. The office has desk space and office equipment. This room is also used as our stained glass art studio - so there may be a project or two in process on the work table. The house has wireless inter net both in the office and throughout. The great room is covered with west-facing windows and french doors and offers relaxing and inspired views. The room is furnished with a leather sectional, big screen TV, DVD,and stereo system. A see-through gas fireplace connects the great room with the dining room.

The kitchen is a cook's dream with granite counter tops and stainless appliances. The cabinetry has been painted by a local artist with trompe l'oil figures on several of the cabinet doors. The kitchen is stocked with an array of spices, etc. and we keep condiments in the fridge to avoid you needing to stock up for your visit. It's a fun and colorful kitchen well-suited to entertaining and family gatherings.

Further down the hall from the kitchen is the fourth bedroom and bathroom. We call this our 'french bedroom' in that is is painted a lovely yellow color and is decorated with memorabilia from our many trips to the Provence region of France. The room has a queen-sized bed and large window which look out on the front garden and fountain. It's a very pretty view with the golden hills and craggy oaks in the distance.

It's a beautiful home and would serve wonderfully for a family get-away, or as a great couples trip to explore the region. Please be aware that this property requires 'animal lovers' as we have resident chickens, 3 outdoor cats and a few horses on the property. They are fed and cared for, but will make their presence known by their friendly personalities.

Whether you seek peace and solitude or an activity-crammed vacation, this area delivers!

Please be advised that the occupancy limit on our home is 8 people. Additional people may be added at the rate of $50 p/person a night for a maximum of 12.

About The Owner

I'm Yule and here to help you enjoy your stay on the central coast. My home is eclectic, warm and welcoming. I'm a widower and my wife infused the house with her sense of class, style and charm. I relish sharing it with people who will appreciate the beauty of our environment.

The Owner purchased this house in 1998

Why The Owner chose Central Coast California

We fell in love with the house when we first saw it and have tinkered with it over the years to make it even more special.

The house merges beautifully with nature with over 2000 sq. ft. of outdoor decking and patios. The decks are set up for entertaining with outdoor tables, chairs, loungers, twinkle lighting and BBQ.

The house is walled with windows overlooking the horses in the pasture and the western hills, and offers plenty of sunshine and space for privacy. While you feel secluded and private at the property, in reality you're only a 5 minute drive into town or to the first of many wineries.

We also like the bright open-feeling of the home.

What makes this house unique

It's a beautiful property located on a hill of rolling oaks with convenient access to wine country, lots of walking trails in the hills around the house and easy access to the other cities and the beaches.

Beautiful home and surroundings.

  • 5 of 5

Great place for a large group. Patios are great and the kitchen was well stocked with all the little things (spices, oils, etc.) you usually have to purchase when renting a home. Would highly recommend for anyone looking for a wine country rental.

Family Reunion at Casa de Balboa

  • 5 of 5

We had a family reunion at Casa de Balboa. Party of 8, plus a toddler and 6 month old. The property was perfect. The 4 large bedrooms allowed plenty of space for us to spread out. The view is outstanding and there is abundant wild life: deer and turkeys. We enjoyed the chickens, chicken coop, fresh eggs (every morning) and horses. The kitchen was well equipped. Our host, Yule, was attentive and a pleasure to know. We can't wait for our next visit to Casa de Balboa!

Paso Robles area wine trip

  • 5 of 5

This property is beautiful! It is well-kept, well-stocked and located high on a hill with a magnificent view. It was nicely removed from the busy world but very close to shopping in Atascadero and only 10 minutes or so from Paso Robles. Our party included me, my wife, my sister from North Carolina, my daughter and her husband along with their 7-month-old baby girl, along with two dogs. The accommodations were perfect for all of us both inside and outside on the decks...so easy just to hang out and enjoy the beauty and warm weather.

Having this home to return to after visiting some of the marvelous local wineries made for a wonderful day...a feast for all the senses. Yule greeted us on arrival and carefully explained all the many features. He could not have been more gracious and helpful. Waiting for us was an appetizer plate and a bottle of local champagne along with fresh eggs from the resident chickens. All the rooms--kitchen, bathrooms, bedrooms, living and dining areas--reflected a labor of love. This is truly a special place that we would return to without a second thought. Thank you Yule and Laura for making your wonderful home available to us.

Beautiful home with stunning views!

  • 5 of 5

We came here to visit for our grandson's high school graduation. It is a lovely home, well decorated, many amenities, beautiful views and even chickens and horses. The owner was very hospitable...left a nice welcome tray for us and cookies for the kids. The beds were very comfortable with nice linens. We had plenty of room and privacy for our party of 8. I just wish we could have spent more time enjoying the home and views. We didn't want to leave. We highly recommend!

We are located in the heart of the Paso Robles Wine Country - approximately 5 miles to Vineyard Drive where Wineries are located. Paso Robles was recently named one of the hottest wine destinations by Sunset magazine and Wine Enthusiast. There are over 200 wineries in the area, with events planned for most every weekend of the year.

Hearst Castle is located on the coast, about 40 miles from our home. The castle is amazing and a must see! When there you can spend the day at San Simeon Beach or exploring the lovely town of Cambria.

We are 25 miles from the historic town of San Luis Obispo with it's downtown shopping district, renowned Farmers' Market, and the CalPoly Performing Arts Center. The town offers great hiking and biking on the peaks that surround the city - such as 'Bishop's Peak' and others.

A short and scenic 20 mile drive takes you to Morro Bay and other beach towns for delicious, fresh seafood, beach walks, fishing, paddle boarding, sailing, kayaking, whale watching, etc. There are many beautiful and pristine spots along this stretch of coastline for tide pooling, beach hikes and picnicking.

Pismo Beach is a bit further south about 35 miles and offers another great beach with camping, exploring the Pismo Dunes, fine restaurants, and a large Prime Retail Shopping Outlet.

The San Luis Obispo area is host to many, many regional events - contact us for event information during your expected travel dates.
