About Jennifer Elwood

Our family consists of two Atlanta area professionals with three children who keep us very, very busy. We understand the value of precious vacation time and how necessary it is to get away from the hectic day to day.

Jennifer Elwood purchased this cabin in 2007

Why Jennifer Elwood chose North Georgia Mountains

We chose this cabin because we love to sit on the front porch or near the fire pit and listen to the river rapids. The North Georgia mountains offers our family an opportunity to escape the business of suburban living, but is close enough to take advantage of on a regular basis.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Just a short note to let you know we really enjoyed our vacation at the cabin. The Smores were a nice surprise especially since my granddaughter asked me on the way there if I remembered to bring marshmallows. The water was a very nice surprise. Your pictures do not show how beautiful it really is.

So much more than a retreat!

  • 5 of 5

Shady River is so much more than a Retreat - we truly felt like we were in a small slice of mountain paradise. We have travelled quite a bit all over the world with our 3 daughters and the Elwood's cabin was the perfect getaway barely more than an hour from our TN home. We had everything we needed in a clean and well-appointed cabin - lots of space in the bedrooms for everyone to spread out, excellent layout of the den/dining room/open kitchen which connects to the huge screened-in porch where we had all of our meals together at the picnic table. The pool table downstairs was a huge hit!

The property is set on a private road so traffic is minimal and neighbors are very friendly. We roasted marshmallows for smores around the firepit each night and lazed about in the Adirondack chairs while the kids played around the riverbank. We brought our Enoo hammocks and were able to set up two between two trees to continue our relaxing weekend. The owners have provided a bunch of tubes for water play, and we walked a ways up the river and put in alongside an open stretch of road for a "long enough" tube ride that was both over calm and small rapids which deposited us right in front of the house.

The photos really are not able to encompass the breadth of what the property has to offer... in addition to a nice soak in the covered hot tub. The hot tub was on and music was playing for us as we arrived - that was a nice touch for kickstarting the weekend! We saw tons of deer and although my husband didn't catch any fish (don't forget to get your GA fishing license), he more enjoyed the peacefulness of the process. Perfect weekend, thanks for your hospitality!

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for the kind review! We also feel it is a small slice of paradise and while it's not far at all from two major cities--Chattanooga and Atlanta, it feels worlds away. Glad you enjoyed some family time together and hope to host you all in the future.--The Elwood Family

Relax and re-charge

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time at the Shady River Retreat and boys loved fishing, floating and swimming on the river. The house was just as described and we had no issues, just few days of having fun and getting away from the rat race. We will be back!!

Excellent vacation

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time at your cabin. It was perfectly located on the river and in a beautiful resort. Although we did not catch any fish we all enjoyed the scenery and touring through the town of Ellijay and Carters Lake. Our dog, Cocoa, had a great time swimming in the river and hiking through the woods.

Relaxing Retreat

  • 4 of 5

We had a very relaxing few days on the river. The roads in and out are quite narrow and the last part is on a gravel road. However, we had no trouble in a minivan. As it was only my wife and I we had ample space. In fact, we only used the main level and never used the upstairs or downstairs. Jennifer allowed us to bring our 4 Golden retrievers to the cabin. They had a great time. As Jennifer predicted, the dogs loved the screened in porch that over looked the river. In the mornings we went for long hikes with the dogs. Afterwords we would go to visit Blue Ridge, Ellijay, Dahlonega etc. with the dogs as the towns are all very dog friendly. Shops have water bowls outside and there are several restaurants with outside terraces which allow dogs. In the afternoons we returned to the cabin and took the dogs swimming in the water (we brought our own dog towels). Each evening we cooked at the cabin. It was nice to have the grill on the deck and it came with an extra propane tank. The equipment in the kitchen was basic but serviceable. A couple of things missing was a toaster and wine glasses (there was a single wine glass). We looked all over for the toaster but couldn't find one! Anyway, it was not a big deal as a quick trip to the store and we bought an inexpensive toaster and a dozen wine glasses that we left at the cabin. We enjoyed visits to the Blue Ridge Brewery and Grumpy Men brewery. One afternoon we went to Amicalola Falls. I walked to the top with 3/4 dogs which was good exercise for all. There are lots of deer around, a resident heron that fishes just outside the cabin and twice I watched from the porch as an osprey caught fish from the river. I am a photographer so I got several good photos.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for taking the time to review our cabin. It sounds like you really enjoyed spending time in the outdoors. How kind of you to replenish the wine glasses and toaster. We do our best to stay on top of items needing restocking and appreciate our guests so much for letting us when we can provide the best set up for a great getaway. Please come back again soon to enjoy the peaceful surroundings and opportunities to take really great pictures!
