Cortijo El Terral is a superbly restored home with a good sized private pool situated in a secluded and peaceful location (17,500m2) surrounded by terrace gardens and borders full of exotic plants, cacti and trees. We offer superior accommodation to immediately help you relax as we know how important and special your holiday is for you. We have one hundred percent positive feedback and because it is so special guests love to return.
The Cortijo has stunning, extensive, panoramic mountain views and looks towards the hilltop village of Comares. The Christians took two hundred years to recapture this fortress from the Moors. The little white washed village glistens in the sunshine and twinkles with lights at night. This small and unspoilt area of La Axarquia in Andalucia - to the north east of Malaga, is still an area untouched by tourism and is mainly agricultural. The high rugged mountains of the sierras are in the distance turning purple at dusk and the Mediterranean coast is to the south. It is an area of outstanding natural beauty and wildlife.
We have lovingly restored the L shaped Cortijo and grounds over many years keeping the original style and features using traditional materials wherever possible. It has a wonderful history which we wish to preserve. The ceilings are beamed, the windows are shuttered and the heavy wooden doors have authentic handmade grills, nails called clavos and handmade door knockers.
There are 360 degree views from the Cortijo, looking towards the mountain called La Maroma (the highest mountain in the area), Comares and the undulating landscape of olive and almond trees towards Riogordo. An abundance of bright coloured wild plants and flowers (including orchids) and herbs cover the area. The wildlife of Gheckos, Chameleons and pretty little lizards can be seen. Beautiful birds visit the garden and fly overhead. The Cortijo is surrounded by our land and there is virtually no passing traffic apart from the odd farmer with his mule or goatherd.
The colours of the distant landscape are constantly changing, contrasting with the bright red Hibiscus, the yellow of the Mimosas, the oranges and lemons in the garden, the rash of Almond blossom in the Springtime to the red earth and the profusion of wild flowers, pale green on the Olive trees and the strong leaves of the Yukkas and Palm trees against the blue sky.
Outside there are different planted terraces and a walkway goes completely around the house past the fruit trees to the tree lined gated drive, around to the hand built dry stone wall area past the Yukka trees onto the shaded areas on the same level as the pool and shower. The swimming pool measures 8 x 4 metres plus entry steps and is the same depth throughout 1.32 metres and is very secluded. There is a barbecue and a preparation area. Tables and chairs are found in five different areas, sunbeds by the pool and recliners under the shaded area are provided to help you unwind and relax.
Each room in the Cortijo has different far reaching views and the master bedrooms are comfortable and en suite. All bed linen and bathroom towels are provided. External towels can be provided on request. The Cortijo feel welcoming and comfortable as soon as you arrive.
We can advise on good restaurants and out of the way places of interest to visit as well as the major attractions of Nerja, Granada, Cordoba, Ronda, Malaga, Marbella, Seville, Gibraltar and even Morocco! Also the local activities, fiestas and romerias. We are registered with the Junta de Andalucia. Our guest book shows one hundred percent positive feedback and many return again and again.
If you need a quiet, peaceful break in a relaxed and very comfortable atmosphere yet within easy reach of modern facilities, the lakes and the sea, or for exploring La Axarquia area which is beautiful, whether you are a couple, a family, on honeymoon, for a specialist holiday or for any occasion, then Cortijo El Terral is for you!
We are now retired and left Winchester Hampshire in 2003 to live in Spain.
Owner/Property Manager purchased this farmhouse in 1995
The Cortijo is totally unique with stunning grounds full of beautiful plants and trees and far reaching mountain views. It is very rare to find a Cortijo like this and a very large garden area ( no grass!).
There is Aircon by ticket.
Panoramic views, very comfortable, attention to detail, owners can help and advise on where to go and what to see although there is a folder detailing this. Superb position and easy access to the main arc road for visiting cities. Quiet except for the birds. Space, distance and seclusion. Peaceful and wonderful for families, honeymooners, couples and meetings.
We had an amazing stay here! The house is perfect, the garden and the pool are lovely! The view you have from here is stunning. Thank you for everything and the helpful tips where to go. We surely will never forget the stay!
We recently had the pleasure of 2 magnificent weeks at El Terral. The villa is very well appointed with a lovely pool, gardens and panoramic views across the Andalucian countryside.
There is a wealth of information on the local area at the villa but it was often difficult to drag ourselves away from the tranquility of El Terral. Of the days out we can heartily recommend the incredible rock formations at the El Torcal de Antequera national park, the Playa Cantajarran beach and La Barraca restaurant near Nerja (treat yourself to a sunbed with a comfy cushion and you're set for the day!) and, of course, the city of Alhambra and gardens in Granada. The nearest bar/restaurant Bar Ortega is very friendly and serves good food.
Lind and Rob's passion for the area is very much in evidence at El Terral and they have done a great job in ensuring that your stay is one that lingers long in the memory. We'll be back!
We alternated days out with days spent relaxing by the pool and enjoying the peace and quiet, broken only by a swim and the occasional game of table tennis.
What a beautiful place! We had a wonderful relaxing week here and totally fell in love with the area! The cortijo is immaculate - well maintained and very clean. There are lots of fantastic terraces to sit at and the pool is lovely. We particularly enjoyed going to Playa el Canuelo and seeing flamenco in Nerja - two great recommendations from Linda.
This cortijo is very special........Thank you!
My wife and I stayed at Cortijo El Terral last year and we are about to book again. The Cortijo is one of the most amazing places we have ever stayed. The house is so well appointed. The private terrace on the upstairs bedroom is the perfect place for breakfast and to lie back and watch the star filled sky at night. The gardens are wonderful to walk around and take in the stunning and ever changing views. There's nothing nicer than picking a lemon from a tree for a pre BBQ G&T! The pool is beautiful and so welcome in the heat of Southern Spain.
Lin and Rob were so helpful, even getting us extra provisions in so that we could relax instantly. They gladly booked us trips and restaurant tables too. The offer of a cool drink the minute we arrived was very welcome.
Very surprised by the negative review. This was not our experience. The directions were perfect! Judging by the many years of comments in the visitors book at the Cortijo it's not the experience of others either. Our advice is to ignore it and book and book again, as we are doing. You will not be disappointed!
The property was easy to find, well signposted and though steep in parts the drive up was not a problem. The views from the cortijo are amazing and waking up to see the mountains all around was a real treat. The whole place was immaculate, the rooms beautifully appointed in Spanish style with a real eye for detail. The beds were very comfortable and the rooms and kitchen had everything you could need. The pool was lovely. All in all a real find.
Wonderful accommodation in a perfect location. Quiet, but not too far from the beaches and shops. Very obliging owners who have taken a great pride in their property.
When we first arrived at the villa we were overwhelmed with how beautiful it was. The views are amazing and the land around was luscious and green. You can tell the property and gardens are extremely well cared for. The inside was just as beautiful, stylishly furnished with a warm homely feeling. The owners of the villa were very welcoming and friendly and immediately made us feel at home. We travelled with out 8 month son and the facilities they had for him were brilliant, cot, high chair etc. All the rooms inside were beautifully clean. The owners have a great knowledge of the area and were able to recommend lots of things for us to see, do and where to eat out. We had a great holiday and will definitely be returning.
Riogordo - This pretty whitewashed village in the Axarquia region is four hundred metres above sea level. The name of the town comes from the water being mineral laden or 'gordo' fat. The town is divided into three different areas, the northern most rugged part with the Tajo de Gomer and the Sierra de Rey mountains. Between these flows the river La Cueva. To the south the landscape is gentle with rolling hills covered with rows of olive and almond trees. The coastal resort of Torre del Mar is 30 minutes away by car and the Acqua Park is in Velez Malaga which is just before. The next nearest town is Colmenar, six kilometres away, which has a twenty four hour medical centre, although there is also one in Riogordo during the day time.
History - The very first human settlements date back to the Neolithic Period and were located at El Tajo de Gomer. There were Bronze Age remains found in the Cerro de la Capellania. Around the 17th century livestock farming and sweet wine production begun.
Around town - There are a variety of shops in Riogordo and a weekly market. Little supermarkets, butchers, bakers, banks, bars and a daily fish market. The Museum is really excellent set within an old house and reflecting life as it used to be for the 'Riogordenos' people.
Places of Interest - The Church of Nuestra Senora de Gracia was built in 1490, the Hermitage of San Sebastian, built at the end of the 17th century and Tajo de Gomer, one of the most beautiful areas situated close to Riogordo.
There is a walking route that takes you to the Tajo (Gorge) from the river (Rio).
Riogordo sits on the scenic Route of Olives and Mountains, a 62.5 km route, that runs inland through mountainous terrain in the north west of Axarquia.
The oil is the olive oil grown from the verdial trees of the region from which is produced one of the best olive oils in the world. The route covers the areas of Vinuela, Alcaucin, Periana, Alfarnate, Alfarnatejo, Riogordo and Colmenar.
The road to Alfarnate has some of the most spectacular views in the Axarquia region, plus there are three other routes, which take in the local area: raisin (historically, the Malaguenan owners of vineyards have used part of their crops to make raisins). The grapes are laid on paseros (raisin dryers) next to the farm houses. These are distinctive rectangular white sloping platforms, which can be seen throughout Axarquia. The Sun and Avocado route and Mudejar routes are also worth exploring.
Festivals - The festival calendar begins in January with the procession of the Three Kings; during Semana Santa (Easter holy week) a very special event happens in Riogordo, when more than four hundred villagers re-enact the life and death of Jesus. Over six thousand people can be seated to watch this spectacle.
The villagers are dressed in period costume of the time and the horses are saddled as they would have been. The scenes include: Sermon on the Mount, the Last Supper, Judas Betraying the Lord and Jesus on the Cross with the two thieves. The event is set in the natural landscape of Riogordo on Holy Friday and Saturday each year at 4pm.
The Feria de Granada (Cattle Fair) takes place in May, at the same time as the Snail (Caracoles) Fair in Riogordo where the snails are cooked in stock and served with olives, beer and the local wine and accompanied by music and dancing.
A Flamenco Festival takes place in August and lasts a week, with activities in the day and the evening festivities including fireworks. There is also the Feria in August in Riogordo which holds its own events and fireworks and in Malaga. Malaga Feria is full of spectacle with dancing and singing and events during the day in the centre and this continues on the Feria ground in the evening until late into the night. Highly recommended and great fun!
Climate - All year the climate is good even when snow is on the mountain peaks during the winter months. Every month is different in the area and there is always so much to do. In Springtime the Almond blossom covers the landscape in a white and pink haze. Aromas of orange and lemon blossom fills the air. The sounds of the goat bells can be heard in the distance.
