Wonderfully restored traditional Finca with private pool

Bedrooms 3
Separate WC's1
Property type villa
Minimum Stay 7 nights

About the property

3 bedroom, 2 bathrooms, sleeps 6

Finca A Coruna was rebuilt on the site of an old peasant farm cottage with modern requirements. Located close to the village of Competa the access track has been concreted for easy access and the village is but a 15minute walk. A private swimming pool is provided, set among 8000M2 of olive and almond groves along with a flower garden. The Villa commands wonderful views down the valley to the sea with the dramatic Sierra Almijara setting the scene to the rear. A large covered patio for 'al fresco' dining, using a traditional designed stone barbecue is provided. A large pool 8m x 4m for that hot summer sun, while a wood burning stove is provided for the cooler winter evenings. Free high speed WIFI provided along with Apple TV connection. Watch movies, videos and photos from your iphone, ipod, or ipad on the TV using Airplay. Within walking distance to the White village of Competa, with a good selection of shops and restaurants. Just 15 km from the main road junction provides easy access to a series of coastal resort towns like Torrox Coast, Nerja, Torre del Mar and Malaga all famous for their long sandy beaches, shopping and nightlife

The village of Competa is close to the smaller villages of Canillas de Albaida, approximately 2kms, both of which can easily be reached on foot from A Coruna, which is perfect for visitors wishing to eat out in one of the many fine local restaurants and who wish to take a drink with their meal. Both villages are served very well with Supermarkets and splendid gift shops. The many fine coastal areas and resorts such as Nerja, Torrox Costa, Torre Del Mar and Malaga are all close by car or public bus. The whole area of Competa is a walker's paradise with a wide range of walks in the National park accessed directly from the finca. Other local facilities include tennis, pony trekking and horse-riding and even Paragliding for those brave enough to enjoy this wonderful countryside from the air. The historic cities of Granada, Cordoba and Seville are all an easy drive and skiing is just 2 hours away.

The Cities: The Cities

Seville is easily Andalusia’s most exciting city and the best-looking thanks to over 500 years under Moorish rule. Go straight to the Alcázar (right), a 12th-century palace with beautiful mosaic-tiled gardens. Adjoining it is the Giralda minaret, which you can climb for superb views of the city.

The Alcázar backs on to Santa Cruz, a gorgeous neighbourhood of lemon-painted houses with green shutters and geranium-stocked window boxes.

Málaga is scruffier than Seville but feels even more Spanish since tourists tend to skip this city for the coast. The Paseo del Parque is a lovely tropical garden that runs the length of the harbour front. It’s heavily planted with It’s heavily planted with palms and orange trees so you’ll find couples in the shade and grandparents taking time out while kids play on the swings. At the end of the Paseo is the beach, surprisingly clean, with beds and parasols if you want to make a day of it.

Jerez De la Frontera: Jerez de la Frontera is the birthplace of flamenco, but even here the dance is an elusive beast, as it’s essentially a private and spontaneous affair. The exception to this is the Concurso (February/March annually), during which the great exponents perform at the Villamarta Theatre or Plaza del Arsenal. Away from the flamenco festivals, look for the local peña, or fan club, which will be in a bar or hut. There’s a great one on an estate near Puerto Real, a dishevelled suburb of Cádiz, where local aficionados gather. They hold weekly events and you may be invited in for a free show. A bottle of sherry for the performers would be appreciated.

About Brian Quinn

My family and I live in the West of Ireland on the Wild Atlantic Way. We enjoy the outdoors, gardening, sailing and have had a long love affair with Spain, it's people, culture and scenic beauty.

Brian Quinn purchased this villa in 2001

Why Brian Quinn chose Axarquia (Costa del Sol)

Competa has a special feel for us in many ways it's like the West of Ireland in better weather, rural people have a common affinity with the land and the pace of live which attracts us.

What makes this villa unique

Competa is a special village the fact that so many foreign residents live In the area means that the village can support a wide range of quality restaurants and facilities. Recent investments by the town hall in walks and outdoor access are a real benefit.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Hi, Brian,

Just got back from Competa, have written in the book, but just wanted to let you know how lovely the house is. The pool was a godsend for the last week, it was so hot. We made friends with Euro, who is very well and now very spoilt, you could say that the euro has increased!!W e also added some herbs to your collection, parsley and thyme, on the covered terrace. Tina and Pete are excellent caretakers, very helpful and pleasant.

Thank you again, we may be in touch to ask for a re-visit next year.

Wonderfully restored traditional Finca with private pool
average rating of 4.4 based on 6 reviews

Loved it. The property and location exceeded expectations I would go back.

  • 5 of 5

The location was the first thing that had an impact... fantastic mountainous landscape! I had been warned of the roads but coming from the flat lands of Norfolk nothing could have prepared me.... The second time I hit the roads I knew the car could cope (it was the new bigger fiat 500) so i took my time and started to enjoy the totally different driving experience.

I can safely say I was very happy with the property/villa /finca, the pool had stunning views down the valley there was plenty of privacy and well equipped, even had a TV which we didn't use once!

Lots of wildlife and nature on the doorstep, great for us! Quite funny I was told quite confidently by a Scotsman that there were no poisonous snakes around, bad advice! I found out that's wrong there's 5 different vipers, some of which can stop your heart if they bite you , so worth being aware of that I think! especially as I had taken his advice and went on nature trails in my flip flops, I would have worn shoes!

The food was great and the locals were very hospitable.

I will totally be recommending the property as a place to stay, and the area as a place to explore and visit. We will be going back.

One last thing, Granada loved that place, also visit the Alhambra but book you ticket in advance it sells out.

I could go on and I on. So In a nut shell, go and enjoy!!!!!!!

Lovely Holiday Villa

  • 5 of 5

Our 3rd stay at this villa and as always a magical place to be. Excellent and comfortable facilities with a fabulous pool and every thing we could possibly need for a wonderful relaxing holiday. Near to the lovely town of Competa (walking distance) or a very short drive, where wonderful friendly bars and restaurants await. The villa has a lovely view of the hills and sea beyond, and a lovely terrace on which to dine and appreciate the beauty of the area. We would highly recommend the property and the area to anyone looking for that extra special holiday.

Competa Finca August 2008

  • 4 of 5

We stayed at the Finca in August 2008. The accomodation was very comfortable and traditionally furnished. We could walk into Competa which is a traditional Andalucian mountain village that has a very good selection of restaurants and shops. The view from the terrace was great and we spent hours lazing on the terrace and dipping in the pool. A great place to get away from it all. Great walks in the mountains. It takes a few days to get used to the mountain roads.

Schöne Finca

  • 3 of 5

Also im Sommer bestimmt ganz toll.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your kind comments on the Finca. It was unfortunate that your visit coincided with a perod of constant rain which is unusual. At no stage do I suggest we have a TV we do have a TV unit with in built DVD and a collection of DVD´s on site. You signed up for a defined period on the house wi fi but for some reason did not renew, if you had done so your could have cotinued to enjoyed the pleasure of German stations on your computer. It is true we do not have a collection of German books, you will understand we and most of our guests speak English and hence the supply of English books perhaps a kindle or laptop might be advised. Again many thanks for your visit we found a glass case which I will post to you in Germany

Competa, a delightful medium-sized white village.

It is situated in Axarquia, the coastal province east of Malaga. Competa is set some 600 metres above sea level in the Sierra Almijara, the snow capped range of mountains between Malaga & Granada, that stretch down to the warm Mediterranean. Nestled in the mountains and surrounded by olive groves and almond blossoms, Competa offers the hospitality of the Andalusians who gladly share with you their leisurely lifestyle.

The local climate produces more than 300 sunny days a year and temperatures are pleasant all year round.

The Andalusian culture offers a mix of Mediterranean and Arab customs dating from earlier times. Glorious cities like Malaga, Granada, Cordoba and Sevilla are nearby.

The village is surrounded by a 4,000 hectares wide wildlife reserve, the Sierra Almijara, with peaks as high as 2,068 metres. A stunningly beautiful natural park where you can go for walks to encounter mountain goats, eagles and wildlife.

Golf: Baviera Golf has been designed by José María Cañizares, the prestigious professional golfer. Cañizares is one of our most international and charismatic golfers in whose record are 5 tournaments of the European circuit and 2 world championships as well as several participations in the Ryder Cup.

Baviera Golf is an even course characterized by its wide greens with many movements and the great variety of obstacles which offer a big range of strokes and an ideal design for all types of handicap.

The variety of holes and the unsurpassed views both to the Mediterranean sea and the mountains contribute to make you enjoy and share an unforgettable day at Baviera Golf.
