About Mrs Victoria Riley

We first visited Shieldaig in 1985 on a family camping holiday. We fell in love with the location and from then on we regularly visited. As a family of keen walkers we have climbed all of the local Munroes and fished the waters many times. We now are joined by our extended family including our grandchildren.

Mrs Victoria Riley purchased this house in 1999

Great cottage in Shieldaig

  • 4 of 5

Lovely lovely cottage right pn the shores of Loch Shieldaig. The most wonderful views from the windows. Sea eagles flying by, seals popping up frequently. Kept an eye out for otters-good otter country just in front of the house. Very comfortable accommodation. Plenty of room. Lovely terrace to sit on in aunny evenings.

lovely snug comfortable house with peerless view

  • 5 of 5

We have had a fabulous stay.

The house is very accurately described. It is very comfortable, clean and well maintained. The rooms are light and spacious, the beds comfortable and the kitchen well-equipped (I like to cook big family meals on holiday and it was a pleasure to do so in this property. Although the weather was cold we were very cosy in the house.

The view is absolutely wonderful from the house so you can enjoy your time even when the weather is awful!

Shieldaig has a welcoming public bar in the hotel, an excellent smokery where you can buy salmon (yummy!) and a useful little shop for top-up items (I would recommend you to take veg etc with you or have a Tesco order delivered, as we did). There is a nice looking coffee shop in the village although we didn't actually visit it.

There are lovely walks from the house and, of course, magnificent mountain and coastal walks only a short drive from the village.

It was a wonderful holiday and I really, really recommend this house to stay in - we will definately go back!

Owner's Response: We are delighted that you so enjoyed your holiday and especially our house. We would just like to add that the village coffee shop Nanny's is excellent, we lunched there yesterday, superb soup, sandwiches and baking. Also thank you for the information that Tesco deliver here, that's worth knowing. Victoria Riley

Ceol Na Mara is situated at the north end of Shieldaig village close to the shore of Upper Loch Torridon in Wester Ross. The Gaelic name of the property is pronounced 'kyoll na mara' and means 'Music of the Sea'.

Shieldaig lies on the west coast of Scotland, some 68 miles west of Inverness, the Capital of the Scottish Highlands.

The house commands stunning views over the loch towards Shieldaig Island and, on clear days, the Western Isles can be seen.

The island is a home for herons and has also recently been visited by sea eagles which are now seen quite often in the area.

Otters frequently fish and play just off shore and when a fish is caught they sometimes bring it ashore to consume it – they can be literally just yards away. This activity can be watched in comfort from inside the house or, better still, from the lawn!

Pine Martens are occasionally spotted; one visits our neighbour’s bird table regularly.

Sitting on the terrace which runs across the whole frontage of the house sipping a drink and admiring an awesome sunset is an idyllic experience.

Shieldaig is situated amidst some of the most magnificent coastal and mountain scenery in the whole of the UK. Just a short distance further up the coast from Shieldaig are the Torridon Hills comprising well known peaks such as Beinn Alligin, Sgurr Mhor, Liathach and Beinn Eighe.

The area is very popular with hillwalkers and climbers and there are many walks of varying degrees of seriousness. Those who seek a real challenge and wish to bag a few Munros will certainly not be disappointed, whilst others who prefer something less ambitious will also find plenty of scope.

There are several linear walks in the Shieldaig and Torridon area, one of which starts from Inverbain on the Applecross coastal road and goes across country to Applecross itself.Another walk begins at the Beinn Alligin car park about 3 miles from the beginning of the road from Torridon to Diabaig and passes up Coire Mhic Nobuil and behind the mass of Liathach to re-join the main A896 road in Glen Torridon.

Other linear walks in the near vicinity take one from Glen Torridon through to Achnashellach in Glen Carron. 2 walks start from Annat, one going through to Coulags at the western end of Glen Carron. Many people prefer to start these walks from the Glen Carron end.

There is also an excellent walk which starts from Tullich (just to the east of Lochcarron) and goes over the Bealach a'Ghlas-chnoic and then down to join the A896 between Kishorn and Shieldaig. The main part of Shieldaig village itself is just a short walk down the road from the cottage and there is a very attractive main street which follows the shore of Loch Shieldaig. On one side of the street there is a pleasant grassed area giving access to the water's edge whilst on the other side is a row of white cottages.

At the far end of the village there is a slipway for launching boats - and there is a small slipway just in front of Ceol na Mara itself. Hence there are plenty of opportunities for sailing, kayaking, sea fishing, etc.

In the main street of the village just a few minutes' walk from Ceol na Mara is the Tigh an Eilean Hotel which has a restaurant and bar and is open to non-residents.Immediately to the south of Shieldaig is the Applecross peninsula around which it is possible to make a superb circular tour to visit the pretty little village of Applecross, taking in the Bealach na Ba (the Pass of the Cattle) and then returning to Shieldaig via the coast road through Cuaig, Arrina and Kenmore.

This trip takes in some truly magnificent Highland scenery, incorporating one of the highest roads in Britain which climbs from sea level to 2,053 feet at its summit. From the top there are spectacular views of the Cuillins on Skye.
