Oceanfront Cottage in Scenic 'Old Hawaii' , the Original Rainbow Dreams Cottage

Bedrooms 2
Space 900 sq ft
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 4 nights

About the property

House, 2 Bedrooms, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4)

The Original Rainbow Dreams Cottage - with a spectacular oceanfront view, the only vacation rental so close to the ocean on the scenic Old Red Road (Rural Route 137) in the idyllic village of Opihikao. We are lucky to have been several miles away from the recent eruption, which has now ceased. Our lovely cottage and coastal access road remain entirely intact. Come see the new land in this rugged and wild area.

Our Cottage is situated on the beautiful Puna Coast of the Big Island. Set amidst a 150-year old 'kings' grove of coconut palms, the cottage faces directly on the Pacific Ocean with stunning, 180 degree views framed thru palms and rare ocean mahogany trees. Situated amid a tropical garden planted with over 125 coconut palms, exotic fruits and the fragrance of tropical flowers, this cottage is simply the best rental in the area.

Inside the private and well-appointed home, you will find vintage native koa wood, mahogany and bamboo furnishings. The cottage is set up with everything you need - a stocked kitchen, one full bath, an extra outside shower for washing off after the beach, and two bedrooms with plenty of closet space. All rooms have windows to let the natural trade-winds in, and there is a porch in front with a screened lanai on the side to enjoy the balmy air. Rainbow Dreams Cottage is the perfect eco-retreat, where you can really get away from it all. We are entirely solar powered, so alternative energy serves your needs with a few limitations to this rental. Please read our reviews, as there is NO cell service, NO wi-fi, NO T.V. or radio service - just the beauty and the power of nature, and the sights and sounds of the ocean. Also, we have catchment water from the rain, so we advise using bottled water, or free Pahoa town water available at roadside taps, for cooking and drinking. Full grid services are just minutes away, up the road or in the nearby town of Pahoa.

With a direct view of the ocean, you may spend your whole vacation simply gazing at the waves, birds and sky, yet the cottage is the perfect base for exploring the unique natural and cultural heritage of the Big Island. All along the coast in the rural Puna District, you will discover special places to explore, from scenic parks to sheltered coves. Three miles from the cottage is exotic Kehena Beach, where palms and ironwood trees surround a lovely crescent of black sand. Two miles in the other direction is MacKenzie State Park, where steep lava cliffs form a rugged, rocky shore with dramatic crashing waves. At the end of Mackenzie the road now ends - blocked by the recent eruption.

Hilo is the largest town on the Big Island and has a rejuvenated Old Town with quaint architecture, specialty shops, many restaurants, and nearby attractions, including Rainbow Falls, Banyan Drive, Lili'uokalani Gardens, the Pacific Tsunami Museum and the "singing bridge' across the Wailuku River, to name a few.

Volcanoes National Park, which is a major attraction, is reopening in late September, after the recent eruptions. The improved Saddle Road in between Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea Mountains in both scenic and convenient as it provides a 2 1/2 hour drive connecting between Hilo to Kona side of the island.

About David Shaw

We spend as much time as we can at this magical property and always find it to be transformational and rejuvenating. I grew up in New England, went to college in Philadelphia, and currently reside in San Francisco. I work for a nonprofit organization that supports the National Parks near the Golden Gate and helped to organize the 75th anniversary of the Golden Gate Bridge as well as the recent installation by Chinese artist Ai Weiwei on Alcatraz.

David Shaw purchased this cottage in 2000

Why David Shaw chose Pahoa

We looked all over the State of Hawaii for our perfect place and found many areas that we loved, including Hanalei Bay on Kauai, and Hana, Maui, and this area reminded us of those areas, and we liked the nearness to Hilo, which is the second largest city in Hawaii after Honolulu. We especially liked the rugged quality of the Puna Coast and the primal feeling of the land in this area. Being "off the grid" and without cell service - turned out to be heaven. We have many repeat visitors, because people love coming back again and again to this very special and powerful place.

What makes this cottage unique

The Rainbow Dreams Cottage is extremely unique in its proximity to the ocean and its surroundings in an area that is entirely dominated by the beauty and serenity of the natural world. Also, the off-the-grid experience is becoming more and more unique as people need a place to unplug and get away from the daily bombardment of internet and email. For those that need to be connected, it's just a short drive from the cottage in either direction to access the web and cell service.

We loved this house. A beautiful view with the sound of the waves. The decor is lovely, and everything one needs is provided. We would love to return for an even longer stay.

Beautiful spot for a real getaway!

  • 5 of 5

This little cottage is beautiful, and so close to the ocean. A real getaway from everything, no phones, tv or interruptions except bird song, coqui frogs and the wonderful sound of the ocean waves. Despite our visit during the rainiest period ever, we found so much to do in this area. Loved being able to walk across the lane to the ocean and watch the huge waves crashing in.

This property is off the beaten path and off the grid. Could not be nicer or more restful. The whole pacific ocean is right on your doorstep! During our stay we had some car-trouble, but the neighbors were there to help get going again - very friendly.

Peaceful retreat

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay at this lovely cottage. The setting is very peaceful and at night listening to the noises of the frogs and other critters with the ocean waves pounding in the background… Simply amazing! The cottage was well maintained and had all the supplies we needed. Thank you so much for helping to create long lasting memories!

The most relaxing place on earth

  • 5 of 5

We have been returning here nearly every year since 2004. It has to be one of the most magical, beautiful, relaxing, and calming places on earth! It's literally saved us thousands in therapy, and made me a nicer person. ;)

I can't recommend the cottage and the location enough if you really want to get away from it all. Even if you like activity, there are dozens of fun adventures to be had on the Big Island.

Rainbow Dreams Cottage has a special place in our hearts.
