Why Visit Cozumel?
Cozumel is situated next to the world's second largest coral reef system, the Belizean Reef and offers a spectacular collection of colorful coral, underwater canyons and caves, aquatic life and slumbering hulls of past Spanish galleons to explore. A serene and intimate Caribbean island, Cozumel is located 12 miles off the Yucatán Peninsula's Riviera Maya and is surrounded by year-round temperate, crystal-clear water of vivid turquoise and indigo blue. The leeward side of the island harbours an incredible reef system in its calm waters flanked with white sand beaches; the windward Caribbean coastline's strong surf washes against limestone outcrops forming sheltered coves and bays. Cozumel remains an island of primarily untouched jungle, palm groves, lagoons and native wetlands creating a sanctuary for aviary and tropical wildlife.
Our family lives in Southern California and enjoy traveling and a very active lifestyle. We learned to scuba dive many years ago and knew that this was an activity that promised travel to exotic places. Our first trip to Cozumel had us hooked. The spectacular reefs, clear and warm water, and the varied underwater life beckoned us back on several more trips.
One day, while relaxing in a hammock at the neighboringl hotel, Plaza las Glorias (now the Cozumel Palace), we decided to wander next door to the under construction El Cantil Condominiums, which had for sale signs on the property. We hadn't really thought about buying another place but the building with its unrivaled location on the island, the fact that it was obviously a top tier property, and the certainty that Cozumel was going to be a regular destination in the future put the purchase notion on the table. On our next couple of visits to the island, we were shown a variety of properties up and down the island, from other condos to houses. Many were purchase worthy but none rivaled El Cantil in amenities and location. By that time the North Tower was under construction, it was clear that we weren't the only one's who had arrived at a similar decision. Almost sold out.
What a wonderful escape!. We spend only 4-5 weeks down here a year and each time we return, the slower pace, the welcoming ambiance, and the drop dead gorgeous view from our terrace immediately put us in vacation mode. As foodies, we have been pleasantly surprised by the number and quality of restaurants. Food for the body and spirit.
There's not been a time that we haven't resolved to spend more time down here. In the meantime, we will have to make due in Southern California. Living in two vacation destinations. Life is good..
Arnie Purisch purchased this condo in 2008
Location, Location, Location. Upscale. Not just a vacation rental but truly a second home.
Right on the Caribbean. Every time I look out at the beautiful sea, close enough to touch, I am mesmerized. The jacuzzi hot tub on the terrace, with a cold drink in hand is one heck of a way to enjoy the spectacular sunsets. It never gets old.
Clean, spacious centrally located condo unit. Near to grocery stores and several restaurants. AC could be a little glitchy at times, seemed warmer in the unit at night for some reason, even though we didn't move the thermostat.
The concierges could not have been nicer. They were very helpful. Taxis are readily available. 24 hr security also present, although not sure it was necessary. Overall a nice experience for the short time we were there.
The place was in great shape but we would not revisit only because the air conditioning was not working properly. Is was very hot in all the rooms except one. Almost to the point of unbearable. If it were not for that, it would have been perfect.
The property is exactly as described - convenient location, great views, very nice pool area, spacious layout and steps from the water. I loved the layout of the condo with two master suits with ocean views and two other large bedrooms. It's very clean and has everything you need to cook. The balcony was probably my favorite spot to relax after a day of diving.
Also, the concierge staff was very helpful in arranging cooking, massages and setting up local activities.
great time ... well furnished ... maid service ... 3rd yr in a row .
We were 8 family members (3 families) and we had more than enough room. The El Cantil staff and doormen were exceptionally pleasant, helpful and professional. The unit is spacious, clean, nicely decorated and very user friendly for children as well as the scuba divers of the family. We enjoyed our stay and hope to return again. Walking distance to the town square and all amenities.
El Cantil was our home base for exploring the city of San Miguel and the rest of Cozumel island for several days. It is an easy walk from the pier where the ferry from Playa del Carmen docks, as well as the shops and restaurants downtown.
You don't need a car because taxis are readily available out the front door and can take you anywhere on the island. There are two grocery stores nearby and a fully equipped kitchen, if you like to mix home cooking with eating out.
The furniture, fixtures, electronics, and decor are all modern and well cared for. You will appreciate the central air on hot, muggy days. Definitely plan to be home at sunset so you can watch the sunset over the ocean from the hot tub on the deck.
This was a fantastic vacation rental, from what I could see likely the best on the island. I would definitely stay there again!
One of the reasons we bought our condo at El Cantil was the location; it's great to walk almost to everywhere. And the property has its own pier for on-site pickup from one of the dozens of dive operators. The diving on Cozumel is world class. Once you dive here you will see why.
The relaxation of sitting in our Hot Tub with a drink and just watching the Caribbean off our terrace is priceless. The sunsets are magnificent!
The locals are very friendly and welcoming, and the amenities on the island are amazing. Entertainment and recreational activities are as expected in a such a popular destination. In addition to all manner of water sports and a variety of land based excursions (e.g., zip lining, ATV tours in the jungle, Mayan ruins) there are clubs with live music, movie theaters, golf (watch out for crocodiles at the water holes!), shopping, bars and restaurants. Restaurants abound with local and international fare, ranging from from casual to elegant.
There always seems to be something going on in San Miguel, the main town on the island, from yearly events like the Carnival and Iron Man triathlon to frequent musical or other cultural events in the two main town squares, one of which is across the street from the condo.
Cozumel is only a short ferry ride to the mainland town of Playa del Carmen. This section of the Yucatan is known as the Riviera Maya and is famous for being home to some of the world's nicest beaches up and down its coastline. Snorkel with the whale sharks off of Isla Mujera, enjoy water based theme parks such as Xcaret and Xei-Ha, tour the awe inspiring Mayan ruins at Chichen Itza and Tulum, and snorkel or dive the cenotes, the underground river and cavern system unique to the Yucatan peninsula. Cancun with all its attractions is about an hour north of the ferry in Playa del Carmen.
We hope you will enjoy our second home as much as we do and come stay with us soon.
