About Catherine Bennett, Realtor, Broker & Owner

Hello, I'm Catherine Bennett, a full-time real estate broker. After showing and selling thousands of waterfront properties, it was time to find a waterfront getaway of our own! Robert is an architect, professional engineer and Class A contractor so renovating this home is a delight for us. We're constantly updating and decorating, and are eager to share this special property with you.

Catherine Bennett, Realtor, Broker & Owner purchased this house in 2001

Why Catherine Bennett, Realtor, Broker & Owner chose Lancaster

This property appealed to us because:

First, it is located right on the Corrotoman River, my favorite river because it is very clean and excellent for fishing and boating. It is THE river for sailboaters! By 'right on the water', I mean it is built about 25 feet from the water. Waterfront homes are now allowed to be built no closer than 100 feet from the waterfront.

Second, it has an amazing tidal pond that serves as a grocery store for the local waterfowl and a habitat for ducks, otter, and other fascinating woodland creatures. You'll be amazed at the drama that nature unveils daily, including the awesome birdwatching right here on the Atlantic flyway.

Third, it has a floorplan that makes it cozy for a couple or excellent for more people with gathering space and spread out spaces. Two fireplaces make it charming in winter and the wrap around porch with screened porch below make outdoor living in Virginia's excellent weather ideal. And because I love tall rooms, the vaulted ceiling in the front half of the first floor makes it wonderful!

Fourth, it has woods on two sides, the river on the third side and on the fourth side, up the hill, is a lovely neighbor. You can't get much more privacy! Fish Tales is 1.3 acres, including the tidal pond that is accreting, the opposite of eroding!

Fifth, it is in Corrotoman By The Bay, a wonderful little community with a terrific salt-water swimming pool, beautiful professional quality tennis courts with pickle ball. Free exercise equipment and wi-fi at the clubhouse, playground, and many other features. Parties, parades and other events are highlights of this area.

What makes this house unique

Most guests comment on the incredible views throughout the house of one of the most beautiful rivers in Virginia. There's occasional kayakers, fishing boats and sailboats that distract you from the awesome birds and wildlife who live on and follow the river.

They also love how beautiful the house is and the wooded setting. Best of all, they love that we welcome your family dog! The picture is of Robert with our darling Old English Sheepdog, Fanny, enjoying a few minutes of happy time in the living room.

Guestbook comments from the manager

Thank you so much for letting us rent Fish Tales! We had so much fun. I love how much detail you put into every room. Your online pictures really don't do this place justice because it is so much prettier in person. Even the dogs loved it! Dad loved crabbing (when he caught some), Heather (my sister) loved the pool, my aunt loved helping my dad crab (most of the time she had better luck than he did), Mom loved watching the way the sun reflects on the water, and I loved taking pictures of nearly everything. The little red sailboat absolutely fascinates me! Do people still use it? Mom and I think it is just for show. We even named a snake that comes to the cove right beside the deck. His name is Sssteeeree haha! We all wish we could stay longer, but unfortunately we have to leave. I hope you like the sign that we made. Until next time...

We are active members of the Northern Neck Kennel Club and know what a wonderful traveling companion your dog can be. When we traveled a lot it was hard to find a place accepting our dog who was better behaved than most children! So, we decided to welcome well behaved, well groomed dog to Fish Tales! Nearly all the floors are 'dog proof.' Please leave the property clean of dog impact. Please pick up and dispose of the poop, and if your dog sheds, please vacuum and clean the hair as a courtesy to us so we will continue to welcome other dogs. No cats or other pets are allowed.

Great place to get away from it all

  • 5 of 5

Wonderful house on the river. We spent four days there last week for a family reunion. It worked out perfectly for what we needed. It is a remote location (i.e. bring food and drink with you) but we knew that was the case and were prepared.

The house is just as described and furnishings were abundant. Several evenings were spent on the enormous deck just looking at the beautiful scenery which included a bald eagle. The charcoal grill was great for not only cooking dinner but making smores.

Would recommend it to anyone who wants a very comfortable place to gather.

Great place for Labor Day weekend!!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here with our 2 grown kids for Labor Day weekend and had a blast!! It rained all day Saturday, but we made chili, played games and watched football! The loft was really cool, the bedrooms were awesome and we loved the big TV! Internet was great, the kitchen had everything we needed to make pumpkin bread (I brought the mix) and the coffee/tea station was really neat! I liked all the lamps everywhere and the deck was amazing!! We used the pedal boat and the kayak and the duck!! We saw a bald eagle catching fish one morning! Thanks so much for the memories!

Northern neck getaway

  • 4 of 5

We had a great time at Fish Tales and are happy Catherine was able to accommodate us at the last minute after a prior vacation rental fell through. We loved the wildlife and made some family memories that we will cherish forever. It was the first time we went crabbing (both line and pot) and a Great Blue Heron landed about 4 feet from us as we were fishing one evening. We checked out Belle Isle State Park and saw quite a few programs that looked very interesting, but we were there on a Monday when nothing was going on. We had the beach to ourselves on the upside! There is a property to the North that reminds you you aren't far from people and the house and community center were a bit dated and in need of some TLC. The view is gorgeous though and the sunrises were spectacular. While sitting on the deck, the tidal pool gives the effect of being on a boat. Very cool!

Beautiful view and peaceful seclusion

  • 4 of 5

Fish Tales was beautiful! The pictures don't do it justice. The place was clean and had everything we needed. They were very welcoming to our dogs, and that was very important to us, and made our vacation that much better. My brother who is in the army got to visit with us, and thanks to fish tales, he got to see his dogs for the first time in 6 months.

There is not much to do near Lancaster, so it was quite a drive to go do things, but there was plenty to do at fish tales. We enjoyed the paddle boat and the swimming pool.

There were bees that seemed to be living in the tree off the porch. Catherine was easy to get a hold of and she came and sprayed. Unfortunately they came back, so hopefully they take care of that. Otherwise, it was a great vacation and at a bargain price!
