The Quarry is a stunning, detached, Victorian house built for an Admiral. It has undergone an extensive refurbishment, and now boasts beautiful spacious & sunny rooms with magnificent views.
Situated up a long drive, and nestled into the hillside, the house commands a perfect position. Detached & in its own extensive grounds its quiet & private, yet near to shops & cafes & of course the beach (just a 5 min walk).
There's a seaview front terrace (off the sitting / dining room) with table & chairs, a handmade wendy house & small lawn. Off the kitchen is another terrace, great for late afternoon sun, and steps up to the detached Victorian vine room (full of sweet nectarines & juicy grapes in the summer). There is another large terrace here with seating for 16, a charcoal barbecue & great views out over Ilfracombe towards the sea.
Half way up the drive is a quiet, leafy, secluded garden with benches. Perfect for escaping with a book. The large back garden, which leads onto the SW coastal path, is full of pathways, tall trees & plateaus with outstanding views. Its a beautiful wild space & great for older kids to have adventures.
The interior has featured in Real Homes, Conde Nast Traveller, Red Magazine, 25 Beautiful Homes, The Guardian, The Daily Mail & Grazia. It's individual, colourful & full of stunning vintage finds. Comfy beds, good duvets & pillows & quality linen add to the appeal.
The library is full of good books to read in a deckchair. There's a selection of DVDs, games & kids toys. We have a full sky package for rainy days, and WIFI.
The house is perfect for a relaxed holiday. With the original wood or tiled floors, and robust furniture its an easy place to come back to after the beach. Rinse off your wetsuits outside, leap into a huge vintage tub & warm up by the log fire if you're feeling chilly. We do accept well behaved dogs.

I'm afraid The Quarry isn't suitable for wheelchair users.
The 1/2 acre gardens offer numerous terraces & shady spots.
2 sets of French doors from the dining room lead to a huge sea view terrace. This is completely enclosed by fences (therefore totally child friendly). It has a lawn, table & chairs for 6, garden bench, additional table & 2 chairs & a handmade wendy house.
We have 2 high chairs & 2 travel cots. The house is perfect for children. Most of the floors are original Victorian tiles or stripped original floorboards - perfect for sandy children! There's a big toy cupboard in the sitting room.
There's loads of hot water (all the plumbing was replaced during the refurb) & amazing water pressure.
We have hosted many family reunions, with ages from 0 - 90, surfing weekends with friends, wedding groups (Tunnels Beach at the end of the road has a licence), lots of fun summer holidays on the beach, and many out of season walking weekends. Each age group has loved the original design, comfort & friendliness of the house. We have 2 highly regarded caterers who regularly work at The Quarry. They can simply prepare food to you to bung in the AGA, or fully cater a 4 course meal - and everything in between (including deliciously indulgent picnic hampers to take to sandy coves).
We do accept (well behaved) hen parties, and can help with all aspects of your stay.
On our first viewing of The Quarry Paul and I fell in love with the incredible views, wonderful sunny aspect and the large garden that backed onto the coastal path. The house had been in the same family from 1890 to 1965, when the previous owners purchased it. They installed electricity & a few bathrooms - but nothing had been altered since. All the beautiful Victorian features were so well preserved. We spent 4 years restoring the house, but also adding many modern touches. I moved to Devon in 2003 from London/New York where I was working as an events director. Paul, who moved from London in 1999, had opened a DJ bar and restaurant in nearby Woolacombe. We lived at The Quarry until 2008, when we moved to Bath to run our nightclub. The nightclub has now gone, and we have an interiors shop (Pencil Tree in Bath) selling our art, midcentury furniture & vintage lighting. We adore returning to the house whenever we can.
Kirstie Jackson purchased this house in 2004
Ilfracombe remains an unspoilt Victorian seaside town. The landscape is dramatic & inspiring - huge cliffs & hills sweeping down to the sea. We love the town for its quirkiness. So many other places on the coast have become identikit towns - the same shops and restaurants. Ilfracombe is resolutely independent. The Quarry has the best of both worlds. Walking distance of the picturesque harbour with its cafes, restaurants, boat trips & freshly caught seafood; but also a garden that leads onto the wild cliffs & secret beaches found on the SW coastal path. This area boasts many diverse experiences, all in close proximity. Long, golden sand beaches with perfect surf at Woolacombe, vast expanses of moorland on Exmoor and pretty Devon villages with traditional pubs.
The Quarry was our home for a number of years, and so was furnished and equipped as this - rather than as a holiday let. In this way everything is provided, the kitchen is expertly equipped and no expense has been spared on appliances. Many guests remark on the comfort, quality & homely nature of the house and its contents. Paul and I are both artists, and the house is filled with our artwork, that of our favourite Cornish artist Brian Busselle and some wonderful vintage originals bought at auction. All the furniture is either antique, or handmade by Paul. Don't worry - we have kids and so have chosen robust pieces! The house also stands in 1/2 acre of gardens boasting wonderful views, perfect for kids to play or adults to hide away.
North Devon has so much to offer - the surf of Woolacombe & Croyde, wild Exmoor with quaint pubs & dramatic scenery, pretty Ilfracombe with cafes around a working harbour (and great boat trips to explore the coastline), Saunton Sands with the UNESCO Braunton Burrows & the highly regarded Saunton Sands links golf course.
Just a 5 min walk brings you to the privately owned Tunnels Beach. There's a beautiful cafe with sun trap courtyard & a tunnel to the secluded beaches beyond. As well as the beach you can enjoy the Victorian tidal pool carved out of the cliffs & replenished with fresh seawater each day. Woolacombe Bay is a 10 min drive. This is a jaw dropping beach with 3 miles of golden sand, clear waters & good waves. Learn to surf here. Both beaches boast blue flags. Croyde & Saunton are nearby.
Saunton Sands Golf Club is widely regarded as one of the top links courses in the country. The magnificent course follows the dramatic UNESCO protected Burrows site along the shoreline. This is a 15 min drive.
Ilfracombe Golf Club – a beautiful course set into the hills with magnificent views out to sea. 5 min drive.
Willingcot golf course - 10 min drive.
