The Calabria region

Calabria is on the tip of the boot, the extreme south of Italy, lapped by the splendid crystal blue Ionian and Tyrrhenian Seas and separated from Sicily by the Strait of Messina. The warm climate, the beautiful colours of the sea, rocky coasts alternated to sandy beaches, the wild and mysterious nature, the strong and genuine flavours of local food and the vestiges of its ancient origins make Calabria a unique place to admire both in winter and summer. Calabria is a hauntingly beautiful region that is just now getting discovered by tourists.

Any wish can be fulfilled. Those who love nature, its scents and mysteries, can explore the Calabrian hinterland with some of the highest mountain peaks in Italy, discovering pure and unpolluted sceneries, where huge green belts alternate with blue lakes and falls. Walking, hiking, climbing, horseback riding, fishing, biking, mountain climbing, rafting, canyoneering and trekking are all viable activities in the Calabrian mountains. In the winter you can also cross country and downhill ski; the major ski areas are found in the Sila Grande.

On the other hand, those who prefer basking in the warm rays of the sun and dive into a crystal-clear sea can choose from the many charming towns along the long Tyrrhenian and Ionian coasts. ample opportunity for swimming, scuba diving, snorkeling, windsurfing, or sailing, including the unique chance to dive in the vicinity of centuries-old shipwrecks, there are also the less active sports of sun-bathing and people-watching, which are widely practiced here as well

Instead those who prefer to learn about the past of this region, Calabria, the cradle of Magna Graecia and land of ancient settlements, offers a wide choice of churches, monasteries, castles, palaces and places where age-long traditions still survive.

The optimum months for visiting Calabria are during spring and autumn. At high altitudes, warm spring sunshine finally arrives in late April or early May and begins to melt the deep winter snows that blanket the hills and mountains. The coastal plains facing west to the Tyrrhenian Sea and east to the Ionian Sea hardly ever endure snow or cloud and are popular with holidaymakers.

Jasmine plantations and abundant citrus groves of orange, lemon and bergamot trees are bathed in warmth and sunshine for most of the year. In September the number of summer visitors abates somewhat, leaving the narrow roads and long beaches relatively uncongested. The coastal waters are still warm enough for swimming and the woods inland yield a varied mushroom crop as well as displaying glorious seasonal colours.

Pietrapaola is a quaint little village with a small population in the hillside approx 13Km from the coastline of the Ionian Sea, it is an excellent place to relax, unwind and get away from everything, and enjoy the warmth of the locals and charms of village life.

It is a historic village and you are constantly reminded of the history of the location by the structure of the house and the surrounding buildings of the village. Towering over the village is a spectacular rock outcrop that defines Pietrapaola with picturesque farmlands that is lined with groves of ancient olive trees of the Roman and Greek empires surrounding that provide an ideal setting to relax, read a book, paint a picture, or just sit on the terrace with some Vino and enjoy the views, even in the evenings the village is lit up and the views are peacefully and beautiful. There is also a cave just below the Piazza (directly viewed from the house) called “The Princess Cave”

When you arrive in the piazza (the house is only 100 meters from the piazza) is a bar that opens in the morning for coffee, and sometimes opens around lunch time and also sells some alcoholic beverages, sometimes on the weekends they do Pizza’s.

On a daily basis you might hear the toot of horns/sirens from the local farmers who come to the village to sell fresh fruit & vegetables and other products.

Just a 20 minute drive to the coast (13KM) is Pietrapaola Marina where you can walk the beach’s, swims, sun bake and is never crowded.

So if you are looking for a quite peaceful holiday, interested in the locals, village life, local history, you can set your own pace, You can travel through the ancient countryside enjoying the vistas once inhabited by the Greeks and visit the defensive wall of Hanibal ruins nearby that once stretched across the countryside in ancient times.

There are many local restaurants that will satisfy your appetite, in the nearby villages and in the countryside (Usually called AgriTourism) where there is normally no menu and they cook when the grow and breed, so you will always have the freshest of everything . For your little luxuries a supermarket is near the beach only 20 minutes drive

You can also drive for approx an hour to sample locally produced world famous Ciro wines. For those more active, the Sila Grande national park abounds wi
