Enjoy privacy on a virtually private & secluded beach and within the home’s two separate wings, joined by a common outdoor courtyard. This house is perfect for romantic getaways, groups of couples, or families with children. Enjoy panoramic views from the observatory and sun deck with lounge chairs. Grab a drink from the indoor bar, enjoy some music from the Bose Ipod player and watch the waves from the hammock or outdoor shower. Enjoy a BBQ dinner on the new Weber Stainless Grill within the 18x41’outdoor courtyard with extensive seating (or hire a Bahamian Cook).
Sandals Emerald Bay & Garnd Isle Resort: The house is approximately 2.5 miles from the new Sandals Emerald Bay, Greg Norman Golf, Spa and Marina, as well as Grand Isle Resort. The golf course is a Greg Norman designed course. You will certainly want to eat out and some of the new restaurants, or have our local Bahamian cook come to the house to prepare a meal for you. Or arrange for Capt. Pat Smith to take you fishing for the freshest fish, lobster or conch.
Excursions with Pat (on his boat -- The4Cs): There are a host of excursions available during your stay. Captain Pat Smith is a fisherman and has a boat for tours and various excursions. He is a life-long Exuma resident and a great resource for all things regarding Exuma. He has a 30 foot boat and can plan a day (or half-day) for your group to head out by boat to the various Cays; to the Exuma Land & Sea Park; fishing, conch and/or lobster gathering; a trip to Staniel Cay (also the home of Thunder-ball Grotto (extraordinary caves for exploration, etc., where the James Bond movie “Thunderball” was filmed)); Sampson Cay (home of the swimming pigs); Iguana Cay (these iguanas are more like small dinosaurs); Sandy Cay (where Pirates of the Caribbean was filmed) as well as a tours of the islands and cays owned by various celebrities (Tim McGraw & Faith Hill; David Copperfield; Johnny Depp; Nicholas Cage, etc.). There are many more things to see and do and you should speak with Pat well before your arrival.
Recent Renovation: Note that in 2012, all five bedrooms of the house were completely renovated in two phases.
At first, the free standing pod, which contains two bedrooms and one shared bathroom, was gutted from floor to ceiling. The newly constructed unit now contains two newly constricted 13 x 13 bedrooms and one new, oversized shared bathroom. Each bedroom has a queen bed.
In December 2012 we likewise completed the renovation of the three bedrooms on the main section of the house. The Master Bedroom and Bathroom were completely gutted and are new from floor to ceiling: new imported tile floors with high-end custom woodwork wainscoting and crown moldings. The oversized en-suite Master Bathroom is likewise new, with an oversized walk-in shower, free standing double vanities and a separate toilet room. The Master Bedroom is also flanked by a walk-in closet.
Bedrooms two and three were likewise renovated, with newly finished walls, custom bead-board wood working and crown moldings.
My family and I live on Long Island in New York and get to Exuma as often as possible.
Kimberley M. Barnes purchased this house in 2005
My parents had been traveling to Exuma since the early 1970s and I vacationed there very often as a child and young adult.
If you go to Exuma, you want to be on the water (there is no sense traveling there and not having immediate, regular beach access). That is the best part of Calypso, it is beach front, and the beach is quiet, nearly secluded, which is merely steps out the back door. That beach, and the 16 foot square deck perched about 20 feet above the ocean the coral bluff, are the perfect way to spend a day or a week on Exuma.
I just wanted get you this email before I forgot. The house was absolutely beautiful. The view was breath taking! Its location is perfect, we were midway between all of the places we wanted to be. We would definitely stay again!
Great Home! Very large with a total of 5 bedrooms. We had a great time! The home is nicely equipped with all the comforts of home, including a well stocked kitchen, comfortable furniture inside and outside, and they even supply beach towels (many beach homes require renters to bring their own.)
But the most amazing part of this home is the beach! When we walked into the living area and saw the three sets of glass doors we were overtaken by the most amazing view we've ever seen? Paradise! The water is that gorgeous Caribbean blue color. The photos do not do this beach justice!
The hosts, Kim and Leo are very personable and professional. It's apparent that they have anticipated all of your needs while you are renting their home. They also have a hard working, dedicated staff to take care of anything that happens while you are there. They'll also serve as your tour guide and they'll even prepare you a wonderful meal! I would not hesitate to rent this home again.
We are a family of ten people and the house fit us perfectly. The bedrooms were a decent size and the beds were comfortable. The kitchen had everything we needed for meals. The deck gave us views of the sandy beach and crashing surf on the rocks below. We thoroughly enjoyed the entire week we were there and would recommend this house to anyone needing to relax.
PROS: The cost of this house was great, but after staying for 5 nights the cost was more understandable. This house is great (especially for a larger group), layout is generally great - but definitely needs some general TLC (and desperately needs a new refrigerator.)
The layout of the house is great for a larger group or maybe even two families. The 2 main sections are separated by a courtyard at the entrance: the main house (including the kitchen and all shared living space) is to the right: includes 3 BRs and 2 bathrooms. The other section to the left has 2 queen BRs and a shared bathroom with double vanity. However, the kitchen is small (especially in relation to the size of the house). As a group of 9 adults that enjoy cooking, it was nearly impossible for more than two people to be in the kitchen at once.
The kitchen needs a total overhaul. It is VERY small, and many things are not functional (two drawers in the kitchen are jammed shut completely.) The built in microwave doesn't work, and there is a counter top microwave that's been placed there, but it eats up a good deal of the usable counter space (prep space for food.) And the worst of the worst: The refrigerator is in terrible shape and simply needs to be replaced. It's very small (and for a house that sleeps 10+, you can barely fill it with groceries.) It struggles to stay cold and there is no icemaker (Ice is a luxury on Exuma.)
- 3 total bathrooms, all updated nicely, but water pressure and temperature in the whole house is lacking. It was impossible to take a hot shower and water pressure was non-existent. The water wasn't COLD, but it simply never got hot. It might just be that the water heater temperature needs to be turned up. But the lack of water pressure was a total downer considering after a day of sand, salt and sun you need a real shower.
- AC unit in the Queen BR across courtyard does not work, and the window will not stay open. It will be a real problem in the summer.
- Furniture is nice enough but could use a good cleaning.
- The owner of this house is incredibly helpful, even talking on the phone with us before we left to prepare for the trip, giving us shopping advice, etc.
- There are NO cleaning supplies in the house, and the only broom is mangled to death. When staying for a week it’d be nice to clean up and sweep the sand out of the house once or twice.
- Beach is GREAT but very rough (March visit). Kids beware.
Our group had a car-you need a car to stay at this house, and we explored the island very thoroughly. And directions to get here should read if you pass 'Chances' on the left you missed your road on the right. Leaving the house to get on the highway it is a blind turn. Be cautious. The house... This was our favorite view and our favorite beach. Period. Pack pool floats for kids and adults because we all enjoyed that-and we brought our own buckets and shovels. The water is amazing. If you look at the per day cost of the house it is fair. Dinner for 8 in exuma was within a $100 of the nights stay. The house needs some work. There was disappointment when we first arrived, furniture is old. But the beach and view were why we were there. Rent this house if you aren't looking for new and perfect things, you don't mind renting a car, and want to experience Exuma.
The island of Exuma is beautiful with its gorgeous beaches and clear blue waters. Calypso has a very nice layout. it has 3 bedrooms in the main house with 2 baths a kitchen and a living and dining area. Outside there is a courtyard. There is a separate building with two bedrooms a bathroom and a washer and dryer. These two buildings gave my son and his family privacy as well as my husband and I our own wing. There is a deck that extends out and sits over a rock cliff where waves crash and roll. It is a beautiful place to sit and look at the stars.. However the entire house is dated and needs to be updated. There are also other items in need of repairs like an air conditioner, tiles, electrical outlets and siding. However if going out to dinner is something you love to do on vacation Exuma may not be the place for you. There are very few restaurants and you may wait quite a while in the few restaurants that are there.
Initially the house was a bit difficult to find but it definitely made it adventurous getting there. The island is small so it took no time at all from the airport. We rented vehicles from Berlies Car Rental during our stay, well worth it to explore the island. The photos are almost 100% accurate. The addition to the house is lovely, but the air conditioner in one of the bedrooms didn't work during our week long stay. That made our sleeping arrangements a bit more complicated as it was pretty warm and made it difficult for my sons to sleep. Miscommunication between maintenance never resolved the issue as he was dealing with a running toilet in the master bedroom. The kitchen was utilized every day and it was well stocked. We purchased food on the island and also brought a small suitcase with dry goods to help get us through the week. The sofas had white sheets on them to hide the wear and tear, but it is difficult to keep beige clean so it didn't bother us. The dining room table was large enough for our group, but the wear on the table and chairs is not noticeable in the photos. The outside decks are absolutely gorgeous and breath taking. Every evening we sat outside and enjoyed the views. The private beach was a plus. There was an outdoor shower which made it easy to rinse off any sand. The tiling on the outside patio can be slippery when wet (from the ocean or the occasionally rain storm) so be careful!! There was a deck box filled with some toys and floats but the majority of them were damaged so we couldn't use them. My granddaughter did enjoy the sand toys. There was no hammock as pictured on their website. There was also a washer and dryer which was extremely helpful with a group of our size. We purchased tide pods (easy to transport on the airplane). The dryer took a bit long to dry the towels and heavier items but we are on an island so I'm sure the humidity did not help. All in all the house is amazing and I would recommend it. The location and site on the beach is perfection. Plenty of bedrooms and bathrooms for a large group and if you plan on cooking the kitchen has pretty much everything. We suggest taking a tour with the swimming pigs and visit the Tropic of Cancer (def one of the most amazing beaches ever). If you have small children take a trip during low tide to the Sand Dollar beach, water is just inches high. Rent a boat from Minns and visit the Sunday Pig Roast at Chat n Chill and tour Elizabeth Harbor. Fabulous Week! We will visit again
