About Steve Michelson
Originally from New York I fell in love with the Bay Area while visiting in the late 1960's. I'm from a media family and have been a documentary filmmaker and film distributor in the Bay Area for over 40 years now and still going strong. Currently I run a non profit that supports the engagement activities around films on the environment, social justice, health and sustainability. I've travelled all over the world and have an extensive background in adventure travel. I've always felt the Bay Area was a perfect home base.
Steve Michelson purchased this Farmhouse in 1974
Why Steve Michelson chose Half Moon Bay
There aren't many places in the world where you can live in a secluded and natural environment yet be as close to a major metropolitan center like the San Francisco Bay Area. Lobitos Creek Ranch is surrounded by thousands of acres protected by land trusts, county and state parks. It is only minutes from unpopulated beaches, Redwood forests and fantastic vistas of the Northern California coast. The Ranch has so many fun features including trails, horses and cows, a hot tub, sauna, screening room/theater an outdoor shower. It's a perfect place for a family reunion or gathering of any kind. While it sleeps 6-8 one can add on by booking the Bunkhouse or the soon to be completed Canyon View House for groups of 12 or more.
What makes this Farmhouse unique
The weather on Northern California's coast is divine. All year round the temperature is moderate. The Ranch is located at an elevation of 1000 ft. above sea level so it is not nearly as prone to fog as most properties by the beach. On hot days in the summer there is always a cool breeze. On cold days in the winter it can be warm and sunny. The rolling hills, the coastal fog, the vibrant sense of nature and wildlife are everywhere. From your base at Lobitos Creek Ranch you will also be able to venture out to enjoy the big city excitement, the culture and the humanity of the Bay Area.
Smoking is allowed on the property but not in the Ranch house. We have a nice area dedicated for smoking and a ranch spitune for butts

Great views, beautiful property
We had an amazing weekend here. The house and property are beautifully maintained and there are some great hikes nearby. There are horses and other farm animals on the property that our kids loved. Also, it's very close to half moon bay. If you're looking for a beautiful secluded weekend, this is definitely your spot.
A perfect rustic retreat
Steve is a wonderful host and Lobitos Creek Ranch is a beautiful hidden gem. I am so glad I found it! It was the perfect setting for my girlfriends' weekend. Be sure to take the hike to the Hobbit Tree... you won't regret it.
Gloriously rustic and remote. Friendly host, friendly horses, and a wandering feral cat named Ruby who is aloof, but friendly too.
We had a wonderful time celebrating my wife's birthday, with a campfire, hot tub time, and a great kitchen for making group meals. Easy access to great hiking, and a nice deck if your speed is more relaxing and looking at great views.
Howard Family reunion
I have previously submitted a review. Once more I will say that the Lobitos Creek Ranch is in a beautiful setting. Everyone enjoyed the facilities. Steve, the owner, was very accommodating and responsive to our needs. We would definitely love to come back.
A perfect surprise
We booked the main house and the bunkhouse at Lobitos Creek Ranch for my husband's 30th birthday surprise party. Our stay could not have been more perfect! This eclectic house is situated atop a beautiful valley with stunning views. The site was perfect for our group of 11 and easy to get to from Half Moon Bay. My spouse was very surprised and overjoyed to spend the weekend among his friends. We hiked to the Hobbit Tree, threw around the frisbee at the local beach, played Sardines (it's a perfect house for this game), and relaxed in the hot tub. An incredible weekend! Excellent communication from Steve and the site managers, who were all so helpful as we prepared for our stay. Five stars! We will certainly be back!!!
A spectacular location for a birthday party
What you see is absolutely what you get with this place - stunning views all around, plenty of room to maneuver inside the house, on a working farm (complete with horses and cows - don't worry, that's a ways from your house). We had my husband's 40th birthday weekend here and Steve was gracious and accommodating, allowing us to pitch tents out on the lawn, showed where one couple could park their small RV, and didn't bat an eye when we brought in a few extra tables and chairs to set up for board games. There were plenty of wine glasses and coffee cups for the 20 people who came to celebrate, lots of pots and platters, and so many towels for the jacuzzi (which has an amazing ability to retain heat overnight, let me tell you).
A few notes for people coming to stay: make sure that you engage your wi-fi calling, because while the internet reception in the house is great, there is NO signal otherwise for your phone; it is a winding road to get to the farm with some sections only 1 car width across, so make sure that you talk to Steve if you're coming with larger cars/trucks/equipment to see if you need a route alternative to Google; bring flashlights or headlamps just in case you need to get back to your car at night -- there is some lighting around the building, but not much on the grassy area.
All in all, we had a phenomenal weekend and you will too! Thank you so much Steve for letting us borrow your main house - we all had such an amazing time.
We love having parties. I appreciated how conscious this group was with water and respectful of our fragile ecosystem. Great to know details in advance so we can assist.
We are located about 25 minutes from Ano Nuevo State Park which from January through March is the location for the spectacle of elephant seal breeding. In October the Half Moon Bay Pumpkin Festival showcases the worlds largest pumpkin mostly weighing over 2000 pounds. We are min
