About Jeremy Gerger
I was born and raised in Madison and graduated from Madison High School in 2003. My wife, Chelsey was born and raised in an even smaller town in Pennsylvania called Corry. We met while attending Duquesne University in Pittsburgh where she obtained an English degree and I left with degrees in Environmental Science & Management. Chelsey currently works for an adhesives and sealant company in Mentor and I work for an environmental consulting and remediation company in Independence.
Jeremy Gerger purchased this House in 2016
Why Jeremy Gerger chose Madison
We purchased our 'forever home' in 2011 which is located immediately to the east of Yellow Dog Retreat. It came with approximately 2.5 acres and is a century home that was moved from Unionville sometime in the 1950s. I always had my eye on the big barn located near our house to store my boat and pursued purchasing this small parcel of land from the owners. The owners countered with an offer to acquire the barn, the house and an additional 7+ acres of property. After a little convincing, Chelsey agreed to take the leap and we pulled the trigger. We closed on the property Easter weekend of 2016 and spent over 2.5 years flipping it into a place for family and friends to relax and have a good time. It's been a tremendous learning experience and I've realized that we'll never quite be done with renovations and improvements. For instance, look for a back deck, pond, grain bin bar and patio with fire pit in the near future!
What makes this House unique
The property is full of history! Our house was moved from Unionville sometime in the 1950s and served as a large dairy farm. A large barn formerly sat out back but burned down in the 1970s during a thunderstorm. We still have the newspaper clippingand the old barn ramp is visible to the southeast of Yellow Dog Retreat. Yellow Dog Retreat itself is a former Sears Roebuck House from the 1930s that was originally constructed about 100 feet to the south of where is currently sits. Sometime in the 1960s, the house was dismantled piece by piece (no idea why), rotated 90 degrees, and put back together in its current location. The original wood siding was also covered up with brick when it was rebuilt. A lot of the furniture, barn wood, etc. that we used on decorating Yellow Dog Retreat came from the property. For instance, the antique window handing on the porch came from underneath piles of junk that we found in the barn. Oh, and about the name. Well we have a 7-year old yellow lab named Eddie. He's our best friend! 'Yellow Dog Retreat' was a working title the entire time we were remodeling... "Chels, I'm going over to Yellow Dog for a few hours...." that sort of thing. Well the name just stuck!
Smoking is only permitted outside of the house.

We chose the Yellow Dog Retreat because of its proximity to both our favorite wineries and Geneva-on-the-Lake, but this gorgeous property was so awesome we ended up spending more time there than at the wineries or G-o-t-L!
We were warmly greeted by Chelsey, Jeremy and Eddie (their friendly lab), with Jeremy offering us a beautiful bouquet of freshly cut flowers for our table. Their home was immaculately clean and perfectly appointed, with many antiques from the original house tastefully integrated into the updated property. We brought a fair amount of food for our group, and the kitchen had every pot, pan and dish that we needed to make our breakfasts and dinners perfect! The five bedrooms offered an abundance of sleeping quarters for our large group, and the bathrooms were both roomy and nicely decorated (the hot, firm shower stream felt phenomenal after playing all day)! The living room was incredibly cozy, and the dining room provide ample seating for our group.
There were so many thoughtful touches: Jeremy & Chelsey list all the entertainment in the region on a dry erase board, along with their recommendations. They also provide a nice coffee station in the kitchen, with a coffee maker, coffee, sugar, liqueur, etc. They even have a 5 gallon water cooler which dispenses both hot and cold water, just in case well water is not your thing!
But by far our favorites were the large covered deck and inviting fire pit. We spent mornings sitting on the deck chatting and sipping our coffee, and at night we sat around the crackling fire pit under the sparkling stars... it was absolutely perfect.
Thank you Jeremy, Chelsey and Eddie, for being such gracious hosts, and especially for providing such a perfect venue for our get together! We will definitely be back!
The best time!!
Couldn't have been happier. The place is even better than you could imagine from the pictures. Close to tons of places or just cozy to have nights in. Had an issue with the internet and Jeremy was there right away to fix it. Already planning our next trip there soon!!
Charming Farmhouse, Great Location
The ‘yellow Dog’ has a great location and real farmhouse charm it met our group of 6 needs. The owners have taken great care of this property.
Can't wait to stay again!
The online pics do not do justice to the absolute charm of the house and property! The decorating is so cute! Jeremy and Chelsy have restored this older home to be the perfect home away from home! Couldn't have been cleaner, every amenity we could have wanted was available. The fire pit in back was a nice surprise! Jeremy even came over and readied a fire for us! My 7 friends and I are ready to book for next year and I'm planning a family trip too! we will definitely stay again!
Best in Madison
Jeremy, Chelsey and Eddie have done a remarkable job. They could host HGTV at their property. It’s great to see these young kids with a passion. You will want for nothing (except a blow dryer). If you do want for anything, you are too hard to please. Take tennis shoes to walk the wet grass in the morning. It’s beautiful. I could tell you about all the fabulous touches that are there, but I won’t. This great place will be harder and harder to get. If you need a wine shuttle guy, let me know. Jeremy can help you with the food. Great grill.
Great for the family
A group of cousins, aged 64 to 79, came from 7 states for a weekend reunion at Yellow Dog. What a wonderful place, and what a wonderful host! It was very hot and humid so we stayed comfortable inside and chatted, ate, laughed and reminisced.
