Lovely Cotswold cottage on an award-winning private country estate

Bedrooms 3
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 2 - 3 nights

About the property

Recently re-decorated and refreshed, new ensuite bathroom and carpets.

Tennyson House (45 Mill Village) is situated in a quiet corner of the award-winning 450 acre private Lower Mill Estate. Close to the Cotswold water park, in the south of the Cotswold region. The estate is fully managed and secure. It includes 7 lakes and the River Thames, the rear deck to the cottage directly overlooks the river itself and beyond, the garden runs down to the banks of Mill Lake. In 2011 Lower Mill Estate won the prestigious award for 'UK's BEST DEVELOPEMENT'.

There is a shared heated pool and sauna, tennis court, and children play area. The cottage has 3 bedrooms, one king double, one double, and a single. There is also a sofa bed downstairs if needed to sleep total of 7. The cottage is fully equipped, and has a wood burning fire. All linen and towels supplied.

There is a restaurant onsite.

Wi-fi internet access available at the cottage along with a TV.

There are many walks around the estate and beyond, as well as a lovely pub and restaurant within easy walking distance. There are some areas of special interest for wildlife enthusiasts and birdwatchers, and also carp, coarse and trout fishing available on the lakes.

Wildlife and birdlife: The estate is very proud of its untouched areas of some significance when it comes to bird and wildlife.

Late in 2005 the first European Beavers introduced back into England were released and are hoped to thrive in a far corner of the estate.

There are viewing hides so they can be watched.

The estate is also home to a wide range of Bird life, from waterfowl to owls.

Details of guided walks and the best spots are available from the property or the estate office.

Fishing: There is some excellent fishing on the estate, both coarse fishing and fly fishing.

The coarse fishing is specialised and mostly specimen fishing, and the lakes would be classified as 'hard' and not really suitable for beginners. As a tenant you are able to fish (within the estate fishing rules) details of which are available at the house.

Please note: This cottage doesn't have access to the ArtSpa.

About Dexter Fry

We are originally from the local area and I used to fish the lakes surrounding the area 30 odd years ago. We have been living in New Zealand for 25+ years and purchased the cottage when the estate was first developed. We have had a dozen or so years successfully renting as a holiday home, before we returned mid 2016. We have been staying at the cottage while redecorating and renovating. Now available for holidays again as we are living closer to schools and college in nearby Cirencester

Dexter Fry purchased this cottage in 2002

Why Dexter Fry chose Somerford Keynes

Its is a very quite corner of the estate with lovely outlook over the River Thames and across to Mill Lake.

What makes this cottage unique

Walking around Mill Lake and Farmhouse lake is a real pleasure, all year round.

Lovely Cottage

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is on a fantastic village with lots of high value properties. It has everything you will need, just short of a wardrobe though. The area is quiet with good walking and nature watching areas. We made use of the kayaks a couple of times which was nice, but missed out on using the pool as it was closed the one time we wanted to use it.

We enjoyed our stay!

The property is a very special place, suiting us well for walking the Thames Path and relaxing

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay in this lovely cottage, which is in good condition and nicely decorated. It is comfortable and homely. At the back it overlooks the infant River Thames, which shimmers as it glides past, and the broad Mill Lake beyond the Thames Path - it's a beautiful setting. All three bedrooms look out onto this lake, which is a restful experience. The beds are comfortable and have storage drawers for clothes, with a communal wardrobe on the landing. The en-suite shower room and family bathroom are clean and well-appointed, and the downstairs laundry room has a useful loo/wash-basin. The kitchen is well-appointed too, and there is an espresso machine with instruction booklet for those braver than me in trying to be a barista! But there is no cafetiere - so bring your own if needed. Likewise, no hair dryer - ditto. There are French windows opening out onto the rear decking with a table and chairs, but it wasn't quite warm enough to sit or dine out during our stay. It must be lovely in summer to be able to watch the egret feeding in the Thames at breakfast and late afternoon from the decking rather than from the windows - but it's very shy and flies off when disturbed. The ducks seem less bothered by humans; and as for the chaffinch that fluttered at the kitchen windows, seemingly demanding to be fed! There are 2 sit-on kayaks with life jackets for use on Somerford Lake and Flagham Fen (beaver sanctuary, but we didn't see them.)

Our overall experience was happy and relaxing - the Lower Mill Estate is quiet and well-managed.
