About Lee Ruddle

The last 5 generations of our family have lived in Steeple Ashton. Having lived in Australia for two years we were still 'drawn' home.

We thoroughly enjoy the rural aspect of our home and consider ourselves very privileged to live here. It has afforded us the opportunity to ‘live our dream’ with our family and much loved pets.

Lee Ruddle purchased this cottage in 2007

Why Lee Ruddle chose Steeple Ashton

My husband and I purchased this property in 2007, having fallen in love with it some 30years previous, it needed full renovation to become what we feel is the perfect family home. Following our children ‘flying the nest’ we decided to utilise the space and spilt the property in two and create a self contained holiday home. Prior to owning this property we had renovated another holiday home in the heart of Steeple Ashton and thoroughly enjoyed this experience.

What makes this cottage unique

For many of us the hustle and bustle of everyday life is constant. However both we and our guests get to enjoy the relaxing, rural environment that this home has to offer with the added bonus of relaxing in the hot tub and gazing up at the stars. Its situation means we are surrounded by wildlife at its finest, enhanced by a brook running through the centre of the garden. Yet all of this is within a short walk of Steeple Ashton and all its amenities.

Beautiful country cottage

  • 5 of 5

Absolutely wonderful place to stay. Lee was extremely welcoming and wonderful to work with. The cottage was well appointed and felt very comfortable. We cooked several times and had all the utensils we were looking for, including salt, pepper and oil. The bed was very comfortable and the shower was relaxing with great water pressure and plenty of hot water. The hot tub was an added bonus with shower shoes provided. We would absolutely stay here again if we get back to the area. Definitely recommend it highly!!

Lovely cottage in a nice rural location

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was a delight, Lee & David very welcoming, we really enjoyed our 3 night stay in this beautiful area. The cottage was very well equipped and very relaxing, the hot tub being a bonus, even in the hot weather we enjoyed using it.

Would highly recommend.

Great stay at cottage in beautiful surroundings

  • 5 of 5

Sorry again for taking the flipflops!

Had a lovely stay in Lee and David's cottage, located in beautiful surroundings in the countryside and easy to find using the instructions provided by Lee. When we arrived the cottage was bigger than expected and immaculately presented. Lee had left out some fresh eggs, coffee and biscuits which was a nice touch. The hot tub is secluded and lovely to use after a long day out. David and Lee were really helpful with anything we needed including recommendations for walks and directions to the local pub. Thanks for having us and we would definitely recommend to friends.

Quaint, well-appointed, and lovely cottage

  • 5 of 5

This portion of our 20 day trip (first-time) to the UK brought us to Ashton Mill Cottage. Situated out in the country (a few minutes from the sleepy village of Steeple Ashton, this location offers quiet and a peaceful setting. A lovely, quintessential England garden surrounds this lovely estate. The cottage is attached to the main house, but is arranged to feel quite private. It is enclosed behind a gate, opening onto its own private garden with a gravel path that meanders to a patio and large, windowed door. The welcoming hot tub is to your right as you walk towards the cottage.

Inside are all the amenities. Flat screen TV with a good selection of movies (and the cable choices are adequate). A wood-burning fireplace and lovely sitting area. A well-appointed bathroom on one end of the long hallway, well-provided kitchen on the other end, and a nicely-sized bedroom in the middle . There are excellent views from every window, all into the grounds and garden spaces.

Lee and David are wonderful hosts, and ensure that you are happy, while letting you have as much privacy as you wish. They are approachable, friendly, and interested in your adventures. If we had allowed time for it, it would have been lovely to share a cup or glass with them. They made us feel welcome and cared for.

There is a small pub in town which serves fresh local faire, and a small grocery "The Village Shop" which stocks a modest bit of necessaries (just enough to round out foodstuffs for our few days). The proprietors are wonderful people. I left my credit card there, and they took the time to find out where we were staying and drove out to bring it to me.

Trowbridge (larger town) is less that 10 minutes away, and other sites are just a bit further away (i.e. the henges...Stonehenge, Woodhenge and Avebury, Salisbury, Bath Spa, Bradford on Avon, Lacock, and Castle Combe), but are within easy driving distance. We recommend taking the train to Bath (station near the city centre) from Trowbridge (has parking).

Bottom line: This cottage is special...not to be missed.

We would have loved to have shared a cup or glass with you but were only to pleased to see you making the most of your short stay in this most beautiful part of our county. As you say every thing is within easy driving distance. We do hope you enjoyed the rest of your travels and found more sleepy villages like ours. Kindest regards Lee and David
