About this property

Cozy Ketchikan cabin

Looking for a cozy, private cabin close to town for your visit to Ketchikan, the gateway to southeast Alaska? Salmon Ridge Cabin is off the beaten path, yet conveniently located north of town just off the main road (Tongass Highway) and close to Knudson Cove and Clover Pass marinas. Our traditional cedar-shingled cabin has an updated interior and is designed for the independent traveler, with a fully equipped kitchen (stove, oven, microwave, refrigerator, toaster, coffee maker) and a gas grill for outdoor barbecues. If you need extra freeze space for your catch, we have a chest freezer and vacuum sealer available for your use.

This quaint cabin has a loft bedroom which can be set up with two extra-long twin beds or one comfy king-size bed. The bathroom has a shower and you’ll appreciate the towel warmer on cool, rainy days. The living area has a vaulted ceiling with skylights, which makes the space feel open and airy. There’s a full-size sofa sleeper and dinette in the living area. There's also a full-size stacked washer and dryer so you can quickly clean up after outdoor activities. We provide all linens, towels, cooking and dining utensils.

We seek to provide a welcoming and relaxing environment for your stay, whether you are visiting the island for salmon fishing, adventure, or if you are relocating, or doing short-term work on the island. There is plenty of parking space by the cabin and room for a boat and trailer if needed. We include use of our sauna, kayaks, and canoes as well.

We welcome extended stay travelers and offer a monthly discount. Local sales taxes are included in nightly rates.

THINGS TO DO
Besides excellent boating, fishing, and whale watching, you'll find the southeast Alaska temperate rainforest is great for nature walks and beach combing, hikes to mountain lakes and waterfalls, kayaking and canoeing, and summer bear viewing at near the fish hatchery at Herring Cove. There are some excellent parks and forest recreation areas close by including Totem Bight State Historical Park and Settler's Cove State Park. The Ketchikan Borough has an excellent library and Recreation Center with two pools, an indoor walking track, and game courts. There are also several interesting museums, galleries, performing arts events, restaurants, and fun downtown shops. Ketchikan is a vibrant and friendly community.

LOCATION
Salmon Ridge Cabin is on the north end of Revillagigedo Island, about 10 miles north of the Ketchikan airport and ferry landings. The cabin is in a quiet, forested neighborhood outside of town, so a personal vehicle or rental car is recommended. However, there is also regular bus service on the north Tongass Hwy with stops close by. You’re also very near the popular Clover Pass and Knudsen Cove fishing marinas, as well as a small grocery store and gas stations. In summer, you’ll find colorful wild berries on the property including salmonberries (which look like multi-colored raspberries), blueberries, huckleberries, and salal berries.

WILDLIFE
Ketchikan is on Revillagigedo Island, which is part of the 16.7 million-acre Tongass National Forest (the largest U.S. national forest), a wildlife haven! You are likely to see eagles, ravens, and various waterfowl, squirrels, harbor seals, sea lions, humpback whales, orcas, porpoises, otters, and salmon. We occasionally see Sitka black-tail deer and black bears close by. Hikers may see mountain goats in the high alpine areas, or the elusive grey wolf. You may come across a few “brown banana" slugs during the summer, but rest assured there are NO snakes in our southeast Alaska paradise!

Great little place
The house is just the right size to stay for a week. Clean, and the owners were great at responding to questions. Looking forward to coming back.

Kind and Generous
My wife and I stayed 10 days at the Salmon Ridge Cabin. We had an amazing time hiking, fishing, and generally exploring Ketchikan. I was lucky enough to land and keep a 80+ pound halibut. Mary Beth and Earl generously let me use their freezer to keep the meat frozen until our departure. Thats just the tip of the iceberg on how wonderful of hosts they are. I highly recommend booking with them. We plan to book again in the future.

About the host

Host profile image
We made Ketchikan our home in 2015 when Earl relocated to work on the Tongass National Forest. We immediately fell in love with southeast Alaska - the rainforest, the pristine water, the wildlife, and the people who make this a vibrant, thriving community. Mary Beth commuted from the east coast for three years and just recently retired from a long career in Federal public service. We are happy to be part of the vibrant Ketchikan island community.

Why they chose this property

The dreamy water view from the house sealed the deal for us (guests can come upstairs to see the view from the deck). The house and cabin have a history as we have met several people in town who lived or stayed here as kids, with fond memories of the place. Unfortunately, the property was vacant for several years and fell into disrepair. We purchased it after it was renovated, but we have continued to make improvements and add our personal touches to the property.

Check out our other VRBO property, a waterfront condo in Naples, Florida, Orchid Cove Retreat - VRBO #1433320.

What makes this property unique

The property is quiet, peaceful, and restful - and we have a wonderful sauna nestled in the trees behind the house that guests are welcome to use! Wildlife and plant life on the property are incredible - old growth trees and wild berries, bald eagles and Steller's Jays, squirrels, Sitka deer, and the occasional black bear passes by (don't worry, there are no brown bears on this island). If you are coming to fish, we have space for a boat trailer and extra freezer available.
