About Walt and Joy

We fell in love with Hawaii on our honeymoon over 50 years ago, but only discovered the unique beauty, drama and excitement of the Island of Kauai about 15 years ago, when our daughter Debi Joy moved there with her young family, and began a real estate sales career there. She alerted us to best locations and the best properties on the island, and we finally settled on Kuhio Shores in Poipu Beach for purchase. We all liked 'Aloha Kai', our unit 109, so much that we partnered with Debi Joy in ownership. We (Joy and Walt) have been real estate brokers in California for almost 30 years, and have bought and sold many properties, but none of them has been so simply exotic as 'Aloha Kai'.

Why Walt and Joy chose Poipu

Aloha Kai is as close to the water as any building on Kauai. The seawall out front is 20 feet away across the lawn. On the bayside the lawn is only 12 feet to the bay rocks and the water. So you get water views from every room, and a sense of being surrounded by the sea. The unit itself is highly upgraded with a newly installed marble floor throughout, european style cabinetry, marble shower, new kingsize bed, and all conveniences. The snorkeling bay is right beside you, and around the other side of the building is a white sand beach for swimming and sunning, and out front is the famous PK's surf break. A new shopping center just opened within easy walking distance, and the Beachhouse Restaurant is right next door featuring spectacular sunsets from the bar. Poipu is known as the 'sunny side' of Kauai. So what more could you ask?

This must be the best spot in Poipu. Yours is the best equipped unit we have ever stayed in, and the bed is to die for. We've never stayed anywhere in Hawaii with so many turtles. We enjoyed turtle spotting from the lanai pretty much any time of day. Thanks.

A little piece of paradise

I could not imagine a more perfect place to stay in Kauai. This unit of this condo is absolutely the best on the island, I am sure. The unit came with all the features that one would ever want. It even had a lot of food items such as spices, even coffee K-cups for the Keurig, and tea bags.

The ocean, only 30 ft. from the patio on 2 sides. It was just incredible.

True Pardise

We share the sentiments of all the other reviewers. On one hand, we can't speak more highly of Walt and Joy's little slice of heaven, on the other we don't want this place to get so popular that we can never return !

Kauai is amazing - that goes without saying, but we really couldn't have found a better place as our launch pad. The photos are accurate/don't do the place justice. We would have been content enjoying every sunrise, sunset, and everything in between for our entire trip without stepping foot off the property. Wonderfully appointed, centrally located. Walt was incredibly responsive and they have housekeeping on site to address any issues. THANK YOU SO MUCH Walt and Joy. Really, really a fantastic stay all around.

Nice views but NO privacy. People sitting on the lawn from dawn until Dark

The property is nice but needs some updating. I suggest new pillows, sheets, towels and washcloths. Kitchen needs a better coffee maker. Basic seasonings and staples needed in the kitchen.

The decor could use updating. The decorative pillows in the living room, at the dining room table, and on the bed are worn. The overhead light over the dining table is missing and should be replaced.

These are relatively minor, though the bed is too soft and the sheets are ill fitted. The downfall is there are great views but no privacy. People leaned against our opened windows to take photos, a fisherman leaned his bike under our opened bedroom window at 6 am! Kids yelling, parents yelling at their kids. Everyone texting, taking photos, talking, and hanging around all morning and all evening right in front of our windows.

Owner's Response: How sad! How really sad! This guest was unable to enjoy our unique "Aloha Kai". First of all, very few people walk past our unit during a day, mostly other guests from our building. A few do stop at the corner to enjoy our resident turtles. Second, nothing in the unit is worn or needs replacing. Linens and towels are replaced regularly. The bed is new, The living room furniture is new. The kitchen is incredibly well stocked, as many others have commented on. The range and dishwasher are both new. This guest unfortunately had a need to make untruthful and exaggerated comments about our special spot in paradise.. Please read the other reviews for a more truthful assessment. Mahalo.

The Magic of Unit 109

One morning I awoke knowing I needed to recharge my batteries. What I wanted was to surround myself by nothing but the beat of the ocean, the calming of the stars, and the strength of the marine life on Kauai. I could go camping at Polihale, but that would involve too much preparation of which I did not have energy for. Instead and immediately, I hopped onto google and typed in “Kauai Oceanfront Rentals Koloa Poipu”. Two places caught my eye and one of them was Joy and Walt’s unit 109. Making a quick and wise decision and being in luck that 109 was available at just the right time, I booked it. Finally, the day arrived for me to pack up my linen, toothbrush and binoculars and make the 15 minute drive from Kalaheo I so looked forward to. When I arrived there I had my schedule all planned out … so I positioned the lounge chair and foot stool horizontal to the sliding glass door and froze myself in time. In a blink of an eye, 5 days later, I had observed a large turtle whom I nicknamed “Oscar” pop up like clockwork daily, several whales, a monk seal heading toward Poipu Beach, an Iwa bird fishing and a group of dolphins. After I arrived back home with a new attitude I unloaded my toothbrush from my car along with humility, grace, beauty and love. This was the best hassle free dream vacation ever !!!! Being a decades old Kauai resident I think this says everything anyone ever needs to know about the magic of Unit 109.

The perfect place to stay in Kauai!

We loved this condo!! The location is convenient, and the views are amazing! Both sunrises and sunsets are beautiful from the back patio. The sound of the waves just makes it so relaxing. Everything was perfect. We adventured during the day and loved coming back to the condo every evening and just relaxing on the patio or inside with all the windows open. We hope to come back to stay again!!

Great location, beautiful views, quiet adult setting.

This condo is beautifully furnished and very clean. The owners make the rental and check in very easy. The view is amazing and the location near shops and restaurants is great. Lots of beaches and snorkeling within a short drive and only 20 minutes to Lihue and the airport. Will definitely be back.
