The Site: This site of vineyards & olive trees is set in a magnificent position with stunning views at every turn - hill top villages, the river & valley below, mountains, fields. Other services: We have access to a local chef, who can come and make you home made pizzas in the outdoor oven and other traditional local dishes cooked in the wood oven too. They will also prepare home made pasta dishes and so forth but will need temporary access to your kitchen to do so. A really fun evening, with no need to drive!

Or, why not just meander up the hill (1 min walk) to a boutique B&B where you can enjoy beautiful evening meals al fresco on the terrace with views of the mountains!

Location: The site is beautifully located in the hills, with the closest villages 1km and 1.5km respectively.

For a good choice of restaurants, Castelnuovo with its many shops, bars, restaurants, and famous Thursday morning market is a 12 minute drive, and the medieval market town of Barga is 20 mins or so away, again with a good choice of restaurants and bars.

Guestbook comments from the manager

Dear Lorraine and Fab,

Just a quick note to let you know what a fantastic time we had staying in your lovely appartment, Laura. Thanks for all your tips and advice we really appreciated all your local knowledge! The boys thought it the best holiday ever- they just loved the swimming pool. We are all very much looking forward to returning at some point in the future and exploring more of the beautiful Garfagnana region.

We have returned to cloudy skies and a noticeable drop in temperature!

It was lovely to meet you, thanks again.

Great house and property. Amazing private chefs.

  • 5 of 5

We recently spent a week here. The house is nice and the pool is awesome. We employed the available private chefs for four nights and the food was amazing. We also had dinner at the bed and breakfast next door which was fabulous. There is a man who cleans the pool every couple of days.

I would only caution you that on hot summer days the house does not cool off until very late at night (3am). The heat also seemed to bring out the local scorpions. While not particularly dangerous, we did encounter several.

The folks at Tuscan Retreats were a pleasure to deal with and I found the house a good value for the money.

The local villages are charming and Lucca is not too far for a day trip.

Owner's Response: Thank you for reviewing this property. We are really glad to hear you enjoyed your stay and that you found the food we can offer here to be amazing! Eating under the loggia with someone coming to cook (inexpensively) is often the highlight of guests' stay! Pleased to know you enjoyed the local area, and the beautiful Lucca too... In terms of the heat, the property does usually stay very cool (incredibly so on the ground floor) due to the very thick walls, the shutters (to be closed during heat of day) and also the altitude. This is why none of the properties in the Garfagnana have air conditioning as it is simply not needed. Unfortunately when you visited, this part of Europe was experiencing one of its hottest heatwaves ever, and the altitude did not give us the cool nights it usually does.... We used to actually live in the B&B just above and only had to use fans once in 10 years.... Will future guests please note that if we have an uncommonly hot period again, we are of course available to provide fans, and if anyone encounters a scorpion they are not of the poisonous variety! We trust you enjoyed the rest of your 'European Tour' and hope to hear from you again. Thanks. Lorraine at tuscan-retreats

Peace, tranquility & stunning views in Garfagnana

  • 5 of 5

Our family have been regular visitors to Garfagnana for many years and this was our fourth stay at Cottage Vallecchia (Laura).

The house itself is comprised of two fully self-contained cottages, one on the ground floor, one above so is ideally suited to two families/groups holidaying together. The inside living space, kitchen and bedrooms are all comfortable, spacious and well equipped although for us, the real highlight is the wonderful terrace and loggia from where the views are simply stunning.

On several occasions, our hosts arranged for Italian banquet or pizza nights provided by local chefs at very reasonable prices and prepared in the outdoor pizza oven. Again, these were a real highlight of our stay and a wonderful way to spend an evening being catered for in relaxed surroundings.

The pool is situated to slightly higher ground, surrounded by grape vines and also enjoys spectacular views across the valley below and up towards nearby Treppignana.

The area itself is generally very picturesque and has many nearby towns and villages to explore all with excellent good value local cuisine.

Great cottage in Garfagnana area - fabulous views

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful holiday – fabulous views, lovely drives and walks to do each day. All able to be done in a relaxing way. The Garfagnana area is really lovely with so many places to see. Lucca and the Puccini concert were fantastic and Dario gave us lots of really great local information. This included a great place to eat at a local trattoria. Luciano was the best cook we came across in Italy. We also enjoyed the fruit growing on the property. We picked some cherries each day – just stood under the tree and reached up! The cottage was great and we enjoyed returning there each day soaking up the beautiful views from the pool and porch. The road to the cottage is quite narrow and winding but the location is fantastic.

ein wunderschöner platz

  • 5 of 5

A beautiful place to stay with a great view

  • 4 of 5

We enjoy our holiday in the summer with 2 adults and 5 daughters. The environs is great but the cottage was difficult to find on the car navigation. The villa was very clean and it has nice decorations. Comfortable bed- and bathrooms. The garden, rooftop veranda and swimming pool are the most relaxing places to stay. The owner is very kind and told us a lot about the area and nice restaurants. The owner respected our privacy.

We surely recommend this beautiful place to family and friends.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review and we are glad you had a lovely time! As a reference for future guests, the SATNAV/GPS systems very rarely cover the last few minutes of a journey to any properties in the area since addresses can be rather vague in this rural region! We do however send very detailed directions to all guests to use in conjunction their navigation systems!

Generous property, hosts, and tranquil setting

  • 5 of 5

I'm not one to write reviews but I think these owners and their property warrant it. This is a great property and I would wholeheartedly recommend it for a comfortable holiday in the hillier part of Tuscany. Most properties I have booked over the years are a bit 'over-sold' or the proportions not as generous as you expect from seeing the online photos; this place is different, it is better than what you can see online. Everything you need for a home away from home is there - it's wonderfully clean and everything is in great working order. The highlight was the outside eating area for Laura and the fantastic pool, which is 20 metres away from the house and gated in case you are worried about having children around.

It's a bit of a winding road to get there but once you're there, it's absolutely secluded and you get stunning views of the countryside from the hilltop.

Fabrizio and Lorraine are great hosts - they are from the UK so know what sort of home comforts Brits love, but Fabrizio is Italian so provides local knowledge.

The Le Clerc supermarket close by has everything you need, and do try Il Pozzo (a local slow food restaurant) for dinner - declicious local food, great service, and not very expensive.

If you book this place - I hope you love it as much as we did.

The property is situated circa 1 hr north of Lucca high in the hills of Garfagnana Northern Tuscany. The rural location/views/walking opportunities are the real attraction of this property but there are plenty of restaurants and bars in the market town of Castelnuovo - 12 min drive and also in medieval Barga (20 min drive but new road promised for next yr cutting drive to 10 mins). There is a small bar/shop for basic necessities in two of the closest villages (5 mins in car), and there is a restaurant just over a 5 min drive too.

We can arrange a personal chef for those evenings when one doesn't wish to drive .
