Since the Middle Ages, nobles and royal officials are building large stone house below the fortress. The mansions of the 15th century are characterized by L-shaped plan around a courtyard opening onto the street, their staircase housed in a turret protruding at the corner of buildings. We find beautiful examples street and place Saint-Maurice. In the 16th century, medieval mansions are remodeled in Renaissance style: the stairs are included within buildings, while corbelled turrets appear on the facades. Window frames and skylights are adorned with pilasters and pediments.
