Vacation in a cave

  • 5 of 5

This was a delightful, unique property overlooking Amboise. It is basically a gentrified, limestone cave dwelling. It is beautifully decorated and quite roomy. The cave setting means it is quiet and the ambient temperature is even and comfortable. The only drawback is its location upon the hill which requires walking up a fairly long road/path or a steep set of stairs. The property is on a dead end street which makes parking easy, but requires either backing up the street or turning around in a short radius. The landlady was warm, pleasant and quite helpful. Amboise itself has many fine restaurants and things to do. We spent an entire day on foot within the city limits. Leonardo's former quarters are a must see.

One of the best places we have stayed in all of our European travels!

  • 5 of 5

The owner has done a excellent job of taking the rustic aspects of a cave and adding all the comforts of home. It's beautifully decorated with high quality furnishings. Located on a very quite street and an easy walk to town. Also right down the street from Leonardo's house. We stayed three nights, which was not long enough. What a treat to stay in such a unique property so close to many sights and great food. One of my favorite surprises was the bed, which gave us the best rest of any place we have stayed in Europe.

Perfect location for a perfect town

  • 5 of 5

We stayed two nights in the Troglo de Leonard in Amboise, and we could not have been happier. The owner, Laurence Augrain, is lovely. She met us at the Troglo at the arranged time. She gave us a tour of the Troglo and she helped to situate us in the town of Amboise. She gave us suggestions about what to see and where to dine, and her recommendations were impeccable. The Troglo itself was clean and amazing. Each morning, we loved opening the kitchen window to the sights and sounds of Amboise. In the evenings, we sat outside on the front steps, enjoying the night air and watching the snails on the rocks. The Troglo is located in a peaceful neighborhood, with easy access to the beautiful town of Amboise. We walked into the heart of town several times a day, visiting a boulangerie in the morning, and walking down the road to the left to tour Clos Luce and down the road to the right to tour Chateau d'Amboise in the afternoon. In the evening, we walked into town to enjoy a relaxing dinner and to mingle with the charming and welcoming people of Amboise. Our stay at the Troglo definitely served as a highlight during our two-week stay in France. We hated to leave, but when it was time, Laurence met us at the Troglo. Check-out was quick and easy. We feel like we definitely made a new friend in Laurence, and we hope that she will visit us in the United States one day. We highly recommend staying at the Troglo de Leonard if you are looking for a clean, relaxing, welcoming highlight to your trip. We hope to return someday.

We had a great time, largely thanks to the house, beautifully restored and decorated, where nothing is missing! The Owner have thought of everything, to the delicate attention waiting for us in the fridge ... An address to keep! Even our best wishes for this New Year, and thank you again for your kindness!

Charming and comfortable apartment stay in Amboise!

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed the 3 nights we stayed at this cave apartment in Amboise. The unit is on a quiet side street and has parking in front. We walked into town and the major sights are right nearby. Standing on the doorstep you can see Leonardo da Vinci's estate and house just at the bottom of the hill. The space was well equipped and very comfortable with all the things we needed to prepare meals in the apartment for ourselves. The bed was comfortable. The owner was fantastic and welcomed us there when we arrived and gave us great recommendations on where to find good food and pastries in Amboise. I would stay here again any time. Thank you!

A superb and special place to stay

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in the Troglo for four nights and loved every moment. It is extremely well located to the centre of Amboise. A short 10 minute walk, either up the hill past Chataeu Du Clos Luce or take the shortcut up the stairs. If you take the stairs you'll notice that Chataeu Amboise is located at the top of the street.

The accommodation itself is extremely well equipped, ample room, quiet, comfortable, lovely morning and afternoon sun on the front step. The only very minor improvement would have been a couple of extra bath towels however, the towel heater made this manageable. The

cave is cool even on warm days and can get easily heated using the excellent wall heaters in both of the main rooms. We self catered a number of meals which was easily done with the multitude of kitchen equipment and the variety of fresh food available in the town centre.

Laurence is both a delightful and welcoming host who was kind enough to collect us from and drop us at the train station. We were greeted with a lovely bottle of wine and provided with some excellent advice on things to do and places to eat.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and feel it is the perfect base for exploring Amboise and the surrounding area. Thank you Laurence.
