This is a special & very private location - a place to unwind & recharge ones batteries ! This lovely apartment/cottage - attached to a farmhouse villa - is not overlooked by any other property - affording it complete seclusion yet only 2 kms from the nearest town of Rute , Lake Iznajar. A private driveway leads to the house from the village.The local highway (motorway) is only a ten minute drive away which gives fast connection to all of the major cities in southern Spain.

A hidden gem : this stunning property is in a very rare position within a traditional ancient olive grove & overlooking the turquoise waters of the lake. From the elevated position of this house, you experience an unspoilt panorama of uninterrupted countryside as far as the eye can see. Truly breathtaking ! A full 360 degrees of views ! These are probably some of the most amazing views from any house in the area. With an altitude of 850 meters above sea level, the constant breezes are fresh, clean and healthy.

We have a lovely aquamarine coloured swimming pool - landscaped with natural local stone with sunbathing areas overlooking the lake. Lots of good quality sunbeds, pool towels & and parasols . A large covered pergola with an L-shaped sofa gives welcome shade when it's needed.

The house has clearly been designed to take full advantage of the fine views, enjoying a full 360 degrees of uninterrupted vistas of the lake to the front and mountains to the sides and to the rear elevation. This means that ALL of the rooms in the house enjoy an impressive panorama from their own window.

This house has been lovingly restored over a period of five years from a crumbling abandoned ruin into a relaxing and tranquil retreat.

Great care and thought has been put into the refurbishment and decoration of this lovely house, with a healthy respect given to the simple vernacular architecture of the original farm house. This is a comfortable, interesting and charming house.

The typical Andalusian style means that a small family unit or a large group can share this property in comfort : The house wraps itself around a traditional ‘Cordoban style’ inner courtyard (Spanish patio) with a wishing well in the centre .This house is also suitable for 2 separate families holidaying together, as the accommodation is in two sections, both have separate entrances but are linked by the central courtyard with a large open air dining area .There are plants and pots of flowers cascading from the balconies and arranged around the walls.

The house has been finished to the highest standards ( including WIFI broadband connection & British TV stations ) it is furnished in country style with family antiques but with new beds & modern bathrooms with powerful showers.

There are two appartments :

1 with a queen size bed,

1 with 2 twin beds

A fully equipped modern bathroom

( all rooms have an uninterrupted view of either lake or mountains )

There is an airy and cool ' country style ' living room / open plan kitchen/dining area. Equipped with a cosy wood burning stove for those cooler evenings (from November through to April). The 3 foot thick stone walls keep the house warm in winter & cool during the hot Spanish summers. There are wooden shutters at all windows for the same reason. Handmade traditional terracotta floor tiles throughout. High ceilings with wooden beams in all rooms in the house.

We make every effort at Constanza to reduce our carbon footprint and save energy and fuel. We utilise the energy from the sun and have installed equipment to produce both our own electricity and our hot water supply. A newly drilled water well brings clear refreshing water up from the natural springs that run under the mountain. We overlook the largest lake in Andalucía and the thermals from the lake create cooling breezes which ensure a very pleasant temperature, both inside of the house and around our hilltop location (no need for air conditioning units) and it is is much healthier than an air-conditioning unit !

There is plenty of outside garden space too - both sunny and shaded areas for you to relax in with a glass of something refreshing or for dining ' al fresco' (including a large size woodburning barbecue for the true outdoor eating experience ! ) A large swimming pool overlooks the lake and a sunbathing area invites one to luxuriate on the sunbeds under large parasols. The gardens are designed to give full advantage of the views and to blend in with the olive groves. Locally quarried stone is used to give a natural feel to both the pool area and the pathways. The landscaping uses indigenous drought resistant plants, trees & shrubs throughout making care and watering eco friendly. Flowers, fruit trees & olive trees dominate the planting and simply brushing past the lavender, rosemary and jasmine which grows abundantly in the borders releases the most intoxicating scents. Numerous areas for strolling after meals, the old mule paths make for a lovely, easy walking excursion and you have free access to the olive groves all the way down to the lakeside. We can even supply a dog or two for company if you wish ! Maybe a ride on a quad bike ?

The owners, animal lovers, live on site in a separated part of the farm with their pets.They are available for help at all times to ensure your stay is as enjoyable as possible. A laundry and maid service can be arranged with them if required.

About Murri Little

Owner Murriel is originally from England. After searching the length and breadth of Spain I stumbled upon this ancient ruin overlooking the shores of the biggest lake in Andalucía. Unspoilt, tranquil and teaming with wildlife and so very peaceful ......no nearby neighbours and therefore a very private location.......we just knew this was what we had been looking for ! We couldn't wait to buy it and start bringing the old place back to its former glory ! The house , Lady Constanzas Farm, used to be one of the large estates in the area owning thousands of acres of olive trees . Today we have only a small number of trees as the land has been divided up by the original owners and has been handed down to sons through the generations, this means the surrounding farmland has not changed much for the last 100 years. The house was not needed by the family and was left to go to ruin, only being sold when it was on the point of collapse ! We have spent the last few years restoring this lovely old house into a beautiful home. We love our lives here and would love you to share with us a little bit of heaven on earth ! The province is also famous for Montilla wines ( sherry style wines ) and the Serrano hams, not to mention our acclaimed Anis Liquor, Rute Chocolates and Marzipan. We can arrange private visits to bodegas, factories and speciality restaurants. Because of the rugged terrain 'Extreme Sports' are popular in this region . We can arrange an accompanied day with experts in : caving, absailing, climbing, hiking, paragliding, rafting, canoeing, horse/ donkey riding and more ! Just ask for details.

What makes this apartment unique

The house is situated in the exact geographical centre of Andalucía, making day trips to all of the top cultural destinations so easy by car : central to many 'wish list' trips e.g : Cordoba, Granada, Seville, Ronda & Malaga. Theses are all within 1- 2 hours drive. There are also so many smaller towns and places of interest to visit in the nearby area - we would be happy to advise you on where to go and what to do. After a days sightseeing its lovely to return to Cortijo Dona Constanza, to relax. You will find this is the most ideal spot to unwind in ! Our pool faces due West and we love to sit and watch the spectacular sunsets with a glass of wine at the end of the day. After dark the skies are bright with stars ( there is very little light pollution here ) and we often can see the milky way , satellites and meteors. The moon seems to be so much bigger here too ! We have a clear view of the lake and the Cuevos San Marco dam ................its so romantic to sit outside on warm balmy evenings and take in all of the sights and sounds of the countryside. If you enjoy wildlife its a treat to watch the eagles, hawks, swifts, hare, wild goats, hoopoes and partridge traverse the skies and the land which surrounds the farm. We just love it here and we hope you will too !

A nice place with a few drawbacks

We stayed here a in May 15 and at the time I felt it unfair to leave a less than excellent review, however, now that some else has reflected exactly the same experience as us I will

The beautiful house is shaped like a polo mint with the owner taking the largest half of the mint. This also blocks out the 360 views as their private garden takes half of this away. The remaining view is left down to part of the reservoir and the mountains which is lovely.

To use the pool and the gardens you have to walk part the fenced off owners section. Here you will be joined by the noise of 6+ ex-wild dogs. We have our own dogs at home so know we know that dogs can make great guard dogs. However, these dogs rarely rest! Many people who are not used to dog might find then hugely intimidating Whenever the owners out they bark non stop. This ruins the very reason you pick a lush remote villa with a stunning view. Every time you go in to get something or move they announce their presence. The barking when the owner is out can go on for hours. We eventually used out music by the pool to drown it out.

The villa is supported by a solar powered system. This makes around 70% of the power used by both properties. This mean every evening between 6-8.30 a generator will supplement this reserve. This makes a huge noise. The power issue is something that the owner will take time to make you understand. On the first morning we were asked to make sure a night light was not used again. Even though this meant for our daughter to find her way in the pitch dark. The power reserve was not shared with the pool filtration and often the pool built up a film.

The house is well equiped and has a lovely feel.

However, you must be aware that you are sharing a smaller part of the house and the owners are very much part of the holiday. They are lovely, however, we like our own remote location with views and just the sounds of nature. We missed the details of their exact provimity when booking which is our fault.

Things to do nearby are a dusty manmade beach with two run down restaurants, a small street with 7ish restaurants within 15 min drive. Most things to do are 50mins + by car.

To summarise a charming part of a beautiful house with helpful friendly owner on site to help. Slightly spoils by compromise views, overbearing dogs and issues with power generation. We made sure our fridge and B&Q was stocked as the nearby restaurants were disappointing.

Owner's Response: I am most surprised that you have written a review after nearly 2 years !!!! I am sorry you did not enjoy your stay nor our very Spanish rural town. You were one of our very first guests at the property in May 2015 and as such everything was brand new and we were still completing the final touches to the gardens and systems that run the house . Since then we have built walls to separate the two properties & grounds. The property is large and the guests have always had the largest part of it ( 5 bedrooms ) and we have always lived in the smaller 2 bedroom section and so I don't quite understand your statement about the owners having the largest part for themselves !!!! The shrubs and plants that run along the boundaries are now mature and give privacy to the guest areas. The dogs are older and settled down after being rescued from their terrible lives which they had before rescue. They now understand that we have guests around and do not bark. I am surprised and disappointed in your need to write this strange review after such a long time.

Relaxing week in beautiful, rustic villa

Thank you very much for a relaxing holiday amongst the olive trees with magnificent views from the terrace and pool. A perfect place for exploring the region and visiting the Alhambra. We were very grateful for your local knowledge and hospitality. We enjoyed eating out in three different areas of the garden and courtyard, lovely and peaceful and perfect temperature for us in October.

Absolutely stunning house and location

When we followed Murri who came to collect us (so we didn't get lost) as we drove down a winding dirt road with olive groves on either side we knew instinctively we were in for a real treat.

Then when we spotted the house in the distance....and wow! The whole house and property has the wow factor. Beautifully laid out with an upmarket boutique look. The bedrooms have superbly comfortable beds and stylish modern bathrooms. The Kitchen is very well appointed and we cooked most days.

Murri is a wonderful personality, extremely helpful and very generous with her knowledge and time to make us feel totally comfortable.

We bought our dog with us, and Murri accompanied by her 6 dogs would take us for walks through the olive groves in the cool of the morning. When we arrived it was a sizzling 43C! the hottest Sept on record.

We coped by imitating Murri and the locals. Got up early, then lazed the afternoons away reading and snoozing in the cool interior of the lounge with the doors opened to catch the cross breeze. The late afternoons early evenings were spent in the shade by the pool, looking at the glorious view and watching the swallows swoop down to get insects from the pool. Later we would get icy drinks and watch the stars come out.

We stayed just over a month, and the weather cooled as we got midway through Sept. We slid into a very relaxed routine, taking the dog down to the reservoir near the pretty town of Iznajar for a swim and then joining her in the water.

Afterwards we'd go shopping in the local supermacado in Rute stocking up on the great range of fresh fish, fruit and veg, then spending the rest of the day lazing by the pool.

We did venture out on some day trips, one we went on with Murri which was good fun. And we went to Priego de Cordaba which is very pretty plus a few other famous white towns.

Some friends came out to join us for a week, we went to an amazing restaurant that Murri recommended. Then all of a sudden the holiday was over! Without Murri's imput we would not have had such a wonderfully relaxing holiday, and we both left feeling very fond of her.

We loved it so much we are trying to arrange a visit again for next year.

More of a Rustic Eco Villa than luxury Villa

This review is going to buck the trend of positive reviews. Perhaps we have just been unlucky, but we had a difficult stay and I have to be honest in my review. Our first week was extremely stressful. There were some exceptional circumstances so I wont go into that too much, but several things were unacceptable. We discussed things with Muri and came to an agreement, but the first week of our holiday was not pleasant or relaxing. There are several factors which are under played by the websites and which future renters should consider.

NO air conditioning - When we booked this was listed as one of the facilities (one of my criteria for a villa holiday in July). The owners have corrected this now. The system is to close the shutters in the day and open them at sunset. This may be effective in June when the temperature is not too extreme, but in July/ August with the daytime temperature at 36 degrees, it's impossible to cool the rooms down. There was a breeze in the evening, but it tended to be completely still by 11:30pm. The average bedroom temp was 26 degrees. As described below it was not possible to run a fan at night without negative consequences.

Limited Power - The villa is solar powered - plenty of daytime electricity, but not so in the evening. The power cut out completely on a couple of nights and in our last week the generator was run for 2 – 3 hours every night or early morning making it impossible to relax or enjoy the beautiful location outside and in the morning waking us (had to keep windows open as hot). The evenings were certainly not peaceful when this happened and this spoilt our stay. On last night the generator ran from 8pm til 11pm. We were careful to ensure that we did not run anything that used much power, or shower after sundown.

It was sometimes not possible to use a fan at night as there was insufficient power. Sleeping at night was difficult. We were offered the use of the owners large water fan but this just made the room feel humid so we only used it once.

Dogs - Muri has rescued a number of dogs and although well behaved when she is available they bark a lot when she is out.

These factors should not necessarily stop you renting the villa, but you should be aware of them so you're not disappointed (especially if any of your party are elderly or young children who may struggle with the heat).

Owner's Response: Dear Mr & Mrs Emsley, Thank you for your review : It is most unfortunate you had your holiday in the hottest July in living memory ! The breezes from the lake normally flow all night but sadly for you, in this period the winds were not flowing after midnight for a few nights . I have never said we have air conditioning - I said we had breezes from the lake which naturally cool the house and gardens. Much healthier than air conditioning ! ' A sort of NATURAL air conditioning ' if you like ! There was sufficient power to run the house, have showers, to boost all of your equipment & for fans but as I had explained to you : when many fans are used all night long then the generator would start in order to compensate for the energy usage. This was a period of intense heat and with a large group of people using the house. Note : For the last two weeks the generator has not been started once ! We do not normally have problems with our systems as they are new and quite sophisticated and after the first week of your holiday I felt so bad that you had experienced a disturbed stay at the house, we felt obliged to be generous with our offer of compensation. We decided to refund you fully - the daily rate - for the 6 days rental (for the period that we were away from the property) by way of compensation. What you failed to mention is that Murri was in hospital during your first week and had paid a substitute caretaker to make sure everything ran smoothly during your stay. It is bad luck that he had a couple of technical problems with the systems which run the house. After severeral texts from you to me at 2 am (with unacceptable language included in your dissatisfaction report ) I had an engineer come out and remedy the problems. My dogs, which are seperated from the rental house by two stone walls, are normally very placid but I think the stress got to them too ! Your second week at the house seemed to be problem free - you did not make me aware of any further complaints- apart from an oven which you couldn't ignite. I am sorry you had a bad experience and we are mortified that even though we had taken measures to make sure everything at the house was perfect, it was an uncontrollable and unanticipated experience ( for all of us ) as a consequence of Murri having to leave the property to go for surgery. I hope your next holiday, wherever you choose to go, is a pleasurable one.

A lovely week spent with friends at this stunning location. House is well equipped and excellent value for money. The pool area is a real wow factor with beautiful gardens and loads of places to chill out. Surrounding area is beautiful with loads of lunch places. Thank you to Murri for her fab hosting skills - she was so helpful and accomodating. We will definitely recommend to friends!

absolutely fabulous

What can I say, WOW this holiday was out of this world, first class accommodation, first class facilities ,with breathtaking views, and to top it all Murrie and Pete were outstanding hosts.

From the day we arrived they did all they could to make our holiday a memorable one,giving us all information about the area and places of interest, and if we had wanted a relaxing break ,everything we needed was on site, BBQ ,pool and sun bathing areas.

Would definitely recommend this property to my friends(can't stop talking about it) and we will definitely be going back.
