About Nick Hawthorne
Orick House is owned by Michael Cain, his wife Sally Cain and his mother Sandi Cain. We are all elementary teachers. Sally and Sandi have retired but spend a lot of time in Micheal's wonderful 3rd-grade classroom. We live in Redding, California which is roughly a three-hour drive to Orick House. It is blistering hot here in the summer so we especially love to spend time in Orick to beat that heat! We keep making improvements to Orick House and hope to retire there one day. As teachers we value family time. Board games are organized with pieces in ziplock bags. Enjoy!
Nick Hawthorne purchased this House in 2008
Why Nick Hawthorne chose Orick
We are in a fabulous location for travelers. The Redwood Forest surrounds us on three sides with the Pacific Ocean on the fourth. Directly behind our home, you will find access to Redwood Creek where you can fish. (Fishing poles are available at OrickHouse). We are within a ten-minute drive to the Visitor Center on the Beach. (South about 4 or 5 miles). You will find lots of interesting adventures waitng for you. There are small flat hikes and much more difficult hikes. State and National Parks offer historical sites. Big Lagoon County Park is south of us. At Big Lagoon you can rent boats and even take lessons on how to kayak. Orick House is centrally located. Local towns north and south offer diverse activities. Eureka is the largest city south of Orick House. You can visit a small beautiful zoo in Eureka. Eating at the Samoan Cookhouse on the small island of Samoa is a real treat. (located only a short drive west of Eureka.) Closer to Orick House you will find California State University, Arcata. The college town vibe is wonderful. Shopping and eating Arcata is a treat. The quaint small town of Trinidad is a tourist favorite. Unique shopping, eating and beach combing are available. Just east of Interstate 5 is the small town of Westhaven. If you enjoy looking at houses you will enjoy this drive. The Redwood Forest surrounds the homes in Westhaven. Farther South you will find the town of Ferndale where the movie Outbreak was filmed. Ferndale is a town with many old Victorian houses. We enjoy watching the bathtub races each year. Be sure to look for free publications describing local events and activities as there is always something happening in the area. Please sign the guest book and enjoy reading what other visitors at Orick House have experienced. We welcome you!

location is everything
The Orick house was wonderful. Felt like home away from home.
We were only a stone throw away from all the best trails and natural wonders ie. Fern valley. Would definitely stay again.
Everything you need plus some
We had a wonderful stay in the Orick House! Everything was well laid out and explained. The kitchen had everything we could possibly need for cooking. We loved the back bedroom with lots of games. The kiddos would go in there and play games to their hearts content. The house was warm and toasty even though the weather was rainy. And is was a convenient location to get to anything we wanted to see. Beaches, redwoods, etc.
Excellent Host, Great Location
Our family stayed here as a 'Base Camp' for exploring the Prairie Creek Redwoods area. It is located very close to major trailheads and it was great to come back at the end of a long day and have a dry, warm house to cook and play games in. The host and instructions were excellent, he made sure that we had everything we needed to have a great experience. We would definitely stay here again!
Thank you so much for the great review. We are excited to hear you enjoyed your stay. Come back soon!
Perfect location for the Redwoods
This house was perfect for our family of 4. The beds were comfortable and the kitchen was well stocked for cooking and packing lunches for our adventures. The Orick market next door had everything we needed for last minute groceries.
The location was incredible as you are right in the heart of everything. The beach was only a few minutes away as well as all of the Redwoods parks and elk viewing all around. The was a great home base. My only wish was that we would have stayed longer!
Thank you so much for the great review. We are excited that you enjoyed your stay and look forward to your next visit!
Great option in redwoods
This house was a great deal and an ideal option for visits to the northern CA coast, redwoods, etc. The house, including kitchen was extremely well equipped with all needed amenities plus extras. Beds and living room sofas were comfortable; good tv channels and dvd player with movies available. Would highly recommend.
Thank you for the great review! We are excited to have you visit again soon!
The above mentioned activities are spread from Ferndale to the south and Crescent City to the north. People come from around the world to visit the Redwood Forest and Pacific Ocean. Nature is at it's best!
The ocean is beautiful with soft sand that makes great sand castles. You will find a beach tent at OrickHouse that can be used to provide shade and protection from sand and wind. There is also a beach blanket located in the middle bedroom closet in the chest.
Enjoy Whale Watching, Beach Activities. Bring Bicycles and enjoy the scenic roadways and trails. Hike or walk. Look for small trails marked on local maps (Azalea Trail). Walks are found in every corner of the area. You can visit different beaches and Redwood Groves every day and never see it all. Movie theaters, live theater, Mom and Pop Shopping, "Hippie" Shops, Wood Burls carved in amazing shapes are all around the area. Eureka has a zoo! Arcata is a college town. Ferndale is south of Eureka and has an old Victorian town (beaches, lots of events like bathtub races). Rodeos and other events are found in local magazines. The Orick Market is less than a five minute walk south of OrickHouse. Get ice cream and other treats there (recommend major shopping in nearby towns). In the town of Eureka there is a peer in which you can fish or crab without a lisence - ask around. The laws of the parks are either or both State and Federal. We recommend you stop at the Visitor's Center located at Redwood Creek Picnic Area 1.5 miles south of OrickHouse. The rules regarding removing driftwood are different on State and Federal land. Closest ATM is in Klamath or Trinidad. Patrick's Point State Park has a museum outdoors dedicated to Native Californians. Museums are typically small and easy to visit. Paul Bunyan Amusement Park is located in Klamath. Check out the Totem Pole in McKinnleyville right next to Safeway!
