Cozy and relaxing apartment, on a monumental building, located on a very quite neighborhood, 10 minutes biking from the city center.
The Spaarndammerbuurt is a nice and quiet old working class neighborhood, constructed in the beginning of the 19th century and designed by Herman Walenkamp, one of the most influential architects from the Amsterdam School architectural style of the Amsterdam School of Expressionist architecture. During 2010/2011 the all residential complex was totally renovated, bringing back the colors and brick structure of the original building. Since then the building is listed as a national monument.
The all neighborhood is intimately connected with the Westerpark, where you can find fancy coffeshop’s, bar’s and cultural activities all year long. The westerpark is also the ideal place for your jogging or walk in the park.
I am a passionate about Amsterdam. Since I moved here in 2007 I still get amazed by this city and the little things I discover every time I walk or cycle around the city.
João Mateus purchased this apartment in 2012
Just got in love with it when I came in for the first time.
The sun all day long and the fact that I can be totally in silence being 10 minutes away from the city center.
2nd floor bijou apartment in a quiet area in the west of the city. Walking distance of 20 minutes to central area. Quite a walk to museum district and the eastern side but we did it no problem as it was such lovely weather . The bed is comfy. Linens and towels provided. Clean modern kitchen and shower room. Plenty of hot water. Small balcony gets morning sun for your breakfast. Owner is lovely and so helpful. With a bike you can easily get all over from here. Bike shop 5mins walk. Wester Park is very close and nice to hang out in nice weather. Priced well I thought it was good value and I prefer this to a hotel also nice not to be in the crowded centre. I'd stay here again! Thanks to Joao and the helpful information in advance it's easy to find and suggestions for eating n drinking in Amsterdam great too. Ideal for a couples stay. Others have mentioned the coffee and I would confirm it's great I may even buy the machine! Joao left coffee tea fruit and wine which is a sweet touch which we appreciated.
Very comfortable and quiet. 10 minute bus ride to center of town. Would definately stay there again. We were greated with wine and chocolates. Obviously our host went the extra mile.
An overall great experience with the apartment, location and owner.
Apartment and Facilities:
The apartment is nicely laid out and efficient with an accurate description uploaded by Joao. It was also nice to have a well stocked kitchen at our disposal to save money on eating out. The bed was very comfortable and the quietness of the area made for a good night's sleep. The shower looked a little intimidating at first but was actually very instinctive to use with plenty of hot water. The balcony was at the rear of the apartment, just off the bedroom but also accessible from the kitchen, as a smoker a balcony was essential and this one was relatively small but with enough space to bring out a chair and sit in the sunshine on a nice day. The living room had a Smart TV with an HDMI cable connected to a laptop for our use, although we simply connected our own laptop to the Wi-Fi which was great for researching the local attractions.
About a 30 minute walk from the center but in nice weather the trip is a joy and a good way to get your bearings. Upon arrival a taxi took about 15 minutes to get to the property from Centraal Station and cost about €10. The flat is very close to Westerpark which quickly became one of our favourite places in the city and offers a great park, eateries and even a bar with an upper floor full of arcade games (Ton Ton Club). There were plenty of restaurants and shops within 10 minutes and even a coffeeshop within 5 (Coffeeshop Ying Yang, although we didn't try this place).
Joao was a pleasure to deal with despite rather short notice due to a forced rescheduling on our part. Joao was also kind enough to provide a PDF with pertinent information well ahead of time as well as a map of his personal highlights of the city. Anyone concerned about the damage deposit needn't worry, it was returned promptly and in full as we caused no damage.
In summary, for a return trip to Amsterdam this will be the first place we think of, highly recommended for couples who want a city break but also love green space and quiet evenings.
Great loft in a great location. Joao was away so we were introduced to the loft by a friend/ property manager. Unfortunately internet was not available, (we were told it would be) and since we didn't have our phones couldn't contact anyone to fix the problem. Left us a little isolated. The only other issue was the condition of the bikes supplied by Joao. No bells, lights didn't work and I had to replace the wheel bearings on one bike. Nevertheless we enjoyed the loft and the city. Would recommend it to others. Ideal for a couple.
