About the property

L'Etoile du Sud is in a tranquil setting of two acres of olive and fruit trees, with stunning views of the village and Maures hills, minutes from the village. If you're looking for somewhere special for family or friends then this is it. Just read the reviews. Beautiful Provencal villages abound, St Tropez and beaches 40-45min, vineyards, golf, watersports, horse-riding, family entertainment - all nearby. Don't miss visiting the Gorge du Verdon about 40 minutes to the north with spectacular views, and outdoor activities from pedaloes on the lake to white water rafting on the river. The villa is 1 hour from Nice airport, 1hr 20 from Marseille and for those lucky enough to fly into the provencal airport at Toulon it's an hour. The pool is 10m a 5m, HEATED from June-Sept with salt water and an electric security cover. The villa is furnished and equipped to a high standard for easy home from home living. It's light and spacious and sleeps 6 people comfortably. A child's z-bed and/or cot are also available as is a high chair. There is Central Heating and duvets if you wish to stay during the cooler months. Throughout the year the skies are invariably blue - it's not called the Cote d'Azur for nothing. We have SKY TV wich includes SKY Sports, a DVD Film Library and plenty of books. There is a Stereo system with CD/Cassette (I-pod compatible) and to keep your valuables safe there is a Wall safe. The phone will accept incoming and outgoing calls and we offer free WiFi. CHANGEOVER IS GENERALLY THURSDAY TO THURSDAY FROM LATE JUNE TO EARLY SEPTEMBER BUT GENERALLY IN JUNE AND SEPTEMBER WE CAN BE MORE FLEXIBLE. POOL OPENS IN MAY

Sports: The famous Gorge du Verdon offers Canyoning, Rafting Kayaking, sailing and swimming and beautiful sightseeing. The close lake of St Cassien also offers watersports. Bicycles, tennis courts and crazy golf available at Figanieres (5km) and we believe there's a new riding establishment about 1km out of the village. There are at least 8 golf courses within an hours drive. The nearest is the beautiful 18 hole course at St Endreol, La Motte (10-15mins). St Endreol also has a Day Spa with various treatment packages from €80. The Terre Blanche at the Four Seasons Hotel at Fayence (approx 25 mins) is stunning and now reportedly one of the best in the Provence/Cote d'Azur area. A keen golfing client recommended Taulane as one of the most beautiful he's ever played and with wonderful restaurant. In winter Downhill Skiing available at Praloup, Isola 2000 and Auron (2hrs drive) or more locally at Greolieres (45mins). Ever been gliding? Try it at Fayence. Callas has it's own Tourist Office.

Medical: Callas has a medical centre and dentist. The doctor speaks some English. A general hospital with Emergency department is at nearby Draguignan (15-20 minutes). Nearest Pharmacies are at Bargemon (5mins drive) and Figanieres (10 mins drive).

Wine: There are hundreds of wine Domaines in the region. You'll pass 6 or 7 just driving from the motorway to the house. In the villa is a book 'The Top 100 Vineyards in Provence' which is just a tiny fraction of what's available or read what other guests have enjoyed in our visitors wine book. Dame Jeanne in the village has an enviable selection. Plenty of sampling on offer. Try the Maison des Vins at Les Arcs which is laid out like a library of wine from only the Provence region. They have at least a dozen wines on tasting.

About Debbie Stratford

We live in the UK and both work in TV production. We found this house in 2003. It was unloved but in a fabulous spot with outstanding views and loads of potential to make it a comfortable home from home which is what we lovingly did. Unfortunately we have little time to visit ourselves during the summer so we have chosen to rent to others who would like to experience and explore this beautiful part of France.

Debbie Stratford purchased this villa in 2004

Why Debbie Stratford chose Draguignan region

The views, the views, the views. In the height of summer it's away from the crowds of the coast but has so much you can see and do but equally we and quite a few guests choose not to go anywhere and just stay put. The villa sits in an olive grove of nearly two acres and is not overlooked making it beautifully private but not remote as the village is just a few minutes away. We hope we've thought of everything to make it a home from home. We have numerous guests coming back time and time again so we think we're getting it right. One client returned for the ninth time this summer.

What makes this villa unique

Because we've tried to make it a home from home you hopefully won't think it feels like a rental property lacking this and that but where you can settle right in. Gill our villa manager is English, will meet you on arrival and because she lives locally is a source of information plus she is on hand should you have any little mishaps and need some help.

In keeping with its celestial name, this place is heavenly - we have just had 11 wonderful days there and loved every minute of it. The villa sits on a hillside overlooking the town of Callas. It is well equipped, very comfortable and offers wonderful indoor-outdoor flow. It is clean and well maintained by Gill, the lovely caretaker. Eating under the mulberry arbour was delightful and late afternoon drinks on the sunny patio became a daily ritual. Being Antipodeans, we made use of the BBQ, purchasing our produce from the local markets- we particularly liked the market in Fayence. The pool is superb - salt-water and heated - it simply entices you to relax, and you can't resist. The village is delightful with a lively and colourful Saturday market. We frequented the friendly local cafe daily for coffee, and ate our pastries there, which we bought from the nearby bakery - just a few minutes walk from the villa. We dined at La Grupie in the village and loved both the food and the friendly service. Callas is a perfect base for exploring local villages, the Riviera and the magnificent Gorges du Verdon. We drove the southern side and took an electric boat ride through the Gorges - utterly amazing, plus we enjoyed the towns of Moustiers-Sainte-Marie and Aups. L'Etoile du Sud is definitely a star. Thanks Debbie!

Owner's Response: We're thrilled you had such a gorgeous stay at Etoile and that you saw so much of the gorgeous surrounding areas. The Gorges du Verdon truly is spectacular isn't it. Good hint about the electric boat ride, up until now we've only white river rafted which is also amazing, although a little wetter I suspect!

Tranquil and beautiful

  • 5 of 5

It's a brilliant house. Very well equipped and comfortable with beautiful views. It also has all the little things so often missing in a rental home. The land around the house is full of olive trees and herbs and hanging out the washing in the meadow to the sound of a cuckoo was a joy. The sun shone and was warm which in April was a treat.

Little Paradise

  • 5 of 5

Although it was our second visit and we knew what to expect it was still very difficult after 3 weeks to leave this Little Paradise. The quietness, sublime views and wonderful property layout, along with the weather, food and many nearby attractions simply made us relax, forget the outside world and live the dream. Hope to be back again!

Fantastic week in France!

  • 5 of 5

We just returned from a week holiday in beautiful villa situated in French hills. The villa was clean and well maintained, and description of the place was accurate. The villa manager was very helpful.

The property is located near a small village Callas, within relatively short distance from Saint-Tropez (we recommend taking boat from Sainte-Maxime to reach Saint-Tropez), Cannes and Monaco. The drive along the coast in between Cannes and Saint-Tropez was wonderful.

There are a few restaurants in Callas serving a local food and some more in the villages situated about 2 miles away. If you fancy a bit of fine dinning we recommend Les Gorges de Pennafort.

There were only four of us staying in the villa, hence we have used only two bedrooms, but there is much more space to accommodate more people comfortably. We would definitely recommend this property and would like thank the owners.

Wonderful 10th Anniversary Trip to Provence!

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I stayed at L'Etoile du Sud in Callas for a week in late April 2016. Let me first say that we had an amazing trip and the villa exceeded our expectations. I'll break my review into three parts.

First-the villa itself. Etoile du Sud is a really charming property! It's an old stone cottage that's been updated and modernized with very nice finishes and furnishings, while maintaining the character of a old Provincial villa. It was just the two of us, and the villa was extremely spacious and comfortable. I would think that a larger family or up to three couples would be very comfortable and not feel cramped at all. The furnishings and beds were very comfortable. We found the kitchen to be much better equipped than most vacation rentals we've stayed at. The outdoor living spaces were very spacious, with a large, pretty pool area and an elegant outdoor dining area. While close to town, the villa feels very private-really can't see any neighbors at all from the property. I think we were the first guests of the season, and everything was in perfect working order and ready for the summer. In my opinion, the pictures in the listing don't do the villa justice-it's roomier and more beautiful than depicted inside and out.

Second-the region. Callas is a very small village about an hour north of the Mediterranean coastal towns of Cannes and Saint-Tropez. Its just over an hour from the Nice airport. We found Callas to be really quaint. In April, it seemed pretty quiet (which we love), but it appears that things get pretty busy in July and August! We enjoyed coffee and croissants every morning in town, and ate at most of the restaurants in the village and had some nice meals. Jeanne at the wine shop was great helping us select some nice wines of the area. During the week we visited many small villages around Callas as well as Monaco, Cannes, Saint-Tropez, and the Gorges du Verdon. The area is just so pretty, with landscape that reminds me of a lot of California. We found the locals everywhere to be super helpful and language was not an issue at all for us with little French skills.

Finally-the transaction. Debbie and David were great to work with. The contract and information was very complete and professional, and Debbie was quick to answer any questions we had. Gill the local caretaker gave a great orientation and was available for anything we needed. Overall, we were extremely impressed with the entire rental experience!

Callas is a pretty medieval Provencal village with a grocery, patisserie, post office with 24hr banking, Newsagent, Tourist Office, restaurants, Beauty Salon etc. There's a market in the square every Saturday. Only a 10 min drive is Draguignan, the old capital of the Var, where there is a wider selection of shops and supermarkets. There is a plethora of Vineyards and Olive groves , creating a beautiful contrast against the Azure skies plus wonderful opportunities for some wine and oil tasting. Within 45 minutes you can be in the stylish resorts of St. Tropez, St. Maxime, Antibes or Cannes. The boat trip across the bay from St Maxime to St Tropez is fabulous plus you avoid the traffic jams. There's a choice of sandy beaches, the closest being at St Aygulf or Les Issambres. 45mins North you'll discover the spectacular Gorge du Verdon, one of the most beautiful canyon's in Europe. It leads down to the beautiful Lac de St Croix offering plentiful watersports . There's a variety of golf courses within an hour's drive including the highly rated Terre Blanche. The St Endreol Golf Course with its own Day Spa and a wonderful place for lunch (don't forget to book) is only 15 minutes from the villa. For days out with the children there are Waterparks, Zoos, crazy golf etc. Callas has a playground by the church. Or, hire a bike, take a beautiful walk, or sit and do nothing but drink in the quiet, the views and the wonderful local wines. Etoile du Sud is a special place.

Other Activities: beaches 40 minutes.

Gorge du Verdon: Whitewater rafting, mountain biking, sailing, kayaking, picnics

Golf, Horse-riding, Vineyards, pretty Provencal villages
