!!Special!! Cypress Dunes Bordering MacKerricher State Park

Bedrooms 2
Property type house
Minimum Stay 2 nights

About the property

House, 2 Bedrooms + One Convertible bed, 2 Baths (Sleeps 4-6)

This lovely home is at the end of a quiet lane, with over an acre of lawn, flowers, and a wide variety of fruit and evergreen trees, and best of all, right next door to the beautiful beaches and dunes of Mackerricher State Park. By walking up an easy trail from the yard and into the dunes, you gain access to miles of secluded beaches and breathtaking vistas. The wildlife is wonderful...early in the morning there are deer and jackrabbits, throughout the day hawks, osprey and sea-birds are plentiful, including the rare snowy plovers running along the edge of the water.

The walk across the dunes from the house to the ocean is about 1/4 mile and takes anywhere from 15-30 minutes depending on your pace. Once you reach the beach, you can head south and hike a couple miles to the tide pools. If you head north a couple miles you arrive at the outlet of ten mile river…this is a good area to look for seals. Just north of the river are fascinating rock formations with tunnels and arches and lots of mussels.

Watching the sunset from the dunes is spectacular and afterward, it's just short walk back to the comforts of your vacation home. Sitting on the deck, you can hear the sounds of the surf in the distance.

Cooking dinner at home is a pleasure with the well-equipped kitchen and barbecue. As the moist ocean breezes cool the evening air, you can relax by the fire or in the luxurious privacy of the large hot tub on the back deck.

A wide variety of shops, galleries, restaurants, and tourist attractions such as the Botanical Gardens and the Skunk Train are just a short drive south in Fort Bragg and Mendocino. The Mendocino county area also has a growing variety of cultural and recreational activities and there are details available at the house.

Tranquil Bird Haven

  • 5 of 5

The house is at the end of a long lane, on a lovely piece of property with lots of trees--cypress, of course, but also fruit tress and others. Even though the ocean is a good ways west of the house, it's so quiet there one can hear the ocean's roar in the distance. The birds love the place. There were quail with their babies, robins, blue jays, crows, and hummingbirds, to name a few. The hummingbirds loved the fuschia bush that is planted outside the kitchen window. It was wonderful seeing them sip nectar while I was doing dishes. The house was comfortable (as were the beds) and clean. The kitchen was well equipped, though the can opener is one that is for those with strong hands--if you had arthritis you'd be out of luck. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and hope to return someday soon. We had an small issue with the cable TV, but we received help immediately when I called the contact number.

On a separate note, a former reviewer said his/her three-year-old walked to the beach from the house unaided, and at the thought of that my husband and I laughed out loud as we made our way out to the ocean from the house. The trek to the beach is over HUGE sand dunes, and while it can be done--even by an out of shape 50 something woman-- it is no "walk in the park." If a three-year old walked there by him/herself (no assistance from parents), I say sign that kid up for American Ninja or something! It's a trek, make no mistake!

A Couples Getaway

  • 5 of 5

We have been going to Cypress Dunes for over 8 years, and always enjoy the peace and tranquility of this lovely home. Such an 'out of the way' retreat located at the end of a quiet lane, and just a stones throw from the Dunes and the Beach not far beyond. A nice kitchen for cooking with lots of space for relaxing, the hot tub is very private and well maintained. Two large queen bedrooms and fold out couches offer room for all. If you like a nice fire, its right there in the center of the home with wood ready to go. My wife and I spent lots of time just enjoying the quiet bliss, patter of rain on the roof, and when the sun broke through, it was off to the beach and a little shell hunting. We cooked in a good bit, but there are a number of eateries to choose from, the North Coast Brewing Co. is our favorite. We use the Harvest Market to shop at and you should check out their Deli section, wonderful food cooked and ready to go, and the soups are so good! It won't be long before we're missing our Ocean hideaway and its time visit again. Jannelle the owner is just the best, friendly, helpful, and always accommodating.

A magical stay

  • 5 of 5

Went for a last minute trip with my husband and four kids to Mendocino area and found this treasure! The most magical part was taking the private access path to the sand dunes which we hiked over to get to the coast. Not another soul around it was like your own private universe and it was amazing! The kids enjoyed exploring and playing on the beach and the sand dunes, then coming home to relax in the hot tub! Cozy beds and cozy home, thank you Janelle for your sharing your home we enjoyed our time here, even got had time to go visit Glass Beach and the Point Cabrillo Lighthouse, and look at tidepools and the whale skeleton at the McKerricher State Park nearby. Will definitely be back again!!

Family Trip with 11 month old and 3 year old

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed the property. The house was perfect for our little family. The crib fit perfect behind the small wall in the master bedroom. My youngest was able to nap while the oldest played in the other room or ran around outside. We were able to cook every meal at the house, they had everything we needed. The hike over the dunes wasn't too far to the ocean, my 3 year old hiked it there and back. It was so peaceful having the entire shoreline to ourselves. The kids loved the sand dunes. The 3 year old slid her butt down the hills and played in the soft, loose sand for hours. There were a few apple trees, it was fun for my daughter to pick a snack while playing in the big yard outside. They had a phone and internet. And they had a decent selection of VHS tapes, not too suited for the kiddos tho. We also brought our dog. That was a very special treat. We got to take her on the skunk train with us too. We would definitely recommend this to friends. The owners were great to work with!

Tons of Family Fun!

  • 5 of 5

Our family had a wonderful time in a five night stay at Cypress Dunes. The house was comfortable and well-stocked, quiet and peaceful. We all slept really well and enjoyed the hot tub, the yard and the extraordinary dunes and beach nearby. Our dogs were over the moon with that yard! The owner was very responsive and getting in and out was easy. We'll certainly be back. Favorite stuff: MacKerricher tide pools, the private beach, relaxing with the family.
