About the property

Cedar Cliff is located on a dead-end road that runs along the Lake Superior shore. From the moment you walk through the doors of this incredible home, you will feel transformed.

The magnificent great room with a massive Carlton Peak fireplace has an antique dining room table that seats 12 and a drop-leaf English table that can seat 6 more. Two large screened-in porches flank this room and the windows that run its length have window seats for bird watching and reading or lake gazing. French doors in the middle open to the stairway that leads down to the water. The north shore is known for its craggy rocks and vistas and our shoreline offers a private experience of this magnificent place.

A fully-equipped kitchen has a six-burner, professional restaurant stove and connects to a charming breakfast nook and pantry. The six bedrooms are comfortably furnished with antiques, fine linens and local artwork. The bedrooms are set to the back of the house affording privacy and separation from group activities in the great room.

Cedar Cliff is a unique environment for your north shore vacation, combining old fashioned relaxation with modern amenities and many local attractions.

About The Owner

My name is Kathy and I have a boutique in Minneapols where we live. Doug is a musician and a software engineer. We have 5 children and 3 grandchildren . We enjoy being involved in the care and maintenence of Cedar Cliff and watching it bring such pleasure to its visitors.

The Owner purchased this house in 2002

Why The Owner chose Lutsen

Doug and I love the North Shore and wanted to share the magic with others and this was the perfect way to do it! We love the community and wanted to help support the local economy and bring more awareness of this incredible wilderness in our own back yard. We chose this large historic Craftsman because we love the quality and simplicity of the architecture and the ability to house large groups comfortably and most of all because we love the Lake! Being on a dead end road is a big plus and the location makes it easy to get to outdoor activies , shops and restaurants.

What makes this house unique

Cedar Cliff offers a truly unique North Shore experience. You have an entire house that was on the historic homes tour with an amazing Carlton Peak fireplace, a fully equipped kitchen, organic coffee, tea and cocoa, wonderful bedding and quilts plus lots of character and lots of privacy.

We have hosted family reunions, yoga retreats, weddings, birthday celebrations, craft weekends, girlfriends weekends and workshops to name a few.

The Great Room is perfect for the group activities and the bedrooms are set to the back of the house for more peaceful quiet time. The two large screened porches give even more great relaxing lake time opportunities and you can even sleep out there on an air bed if you want!

We are a Green facility and use recycled and environmentally friendly products and high quality natural fibers in our linens, towels and rugs.

The biggest plus, of course, is the Lake. The feeling you get looking out over that vast expanse of water just has to be experienced.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Our book club had a grand time - great wine, chocolate, massages and book discussion of Ivan Doig's The Whistling Season. Lots of wind and waves along with shopping in Grand Marais made it a true "Superior Weekend".

The decor and ambiance of Cedar Cliff made our stay exquisite!

The Essence of the Bold North

  • 5 of 5

My friends and I have enjoyed Cedar Cliff each winter for 12 years. It is our return to the beauty of the Bold North. You may ask why do we do it -there are so many reasons. This lovely, designed home has numerous windows on all sides to welcome you in the morning and say good bye in the evening. The front windows look out to Lake Superior. Warm benches beneath these windows allow guests to relax and take in the swells of the waves hitting the rocks below or watch the lake sleeping calmly in patches of ice. The stone wall in the living room has a wonderful fireplace that warms the whole place. There is so much peace in watching both a fire and the waves of the lake. This home also has a gourmet kitchen equipped with many supplies and the shower is powerful and refreshing. The location is ideal: close to Lutsen for downhill skiing and crosscountry skiing at Cascade. We like to venture up to Grand Marais - less than a half an hour away for some sight seeing, shopping and a new micro brewery. Some read books next to the lake on the benches, others work puzzles, play cards or games. The main level is so large and open, that there are many areas for people to gather. There is such a variety of activities at Cedar Cliff: there is truly something for everyone. If you are looking for a fun place to gather friends or family for wonderful memories, this is the place in the beautiful Bold North!

Perfect house for a group ski weekend!

  • 5 of 5

Cedar Cliff was a perfect home for our group (5 families), which consisted of 10 adults and 10 kids (ages 4-10). There was a bedroom for each couple while most of the kids slept in the master bedroom w/ the help of the additional cots. We enjoyed lounging in the living room in front of the spectacular fireplace after a long day of skiing. We certainly would recommend Cedar Cliff and we hope to stay here again in the future.

Beautiful views from a well kept old home

  • 5 of 5

If you needed something, the House has it. Yes, it was below zero F outside, but there are individual thermostats in most bedrooms and well placed space heaters. The great room is beautiful with a fantastic fireplace. Our large family had a great time. We skied Lutsen which is a five minute drive.

The stay was absolutely great! Kathy was easy to communicate with, helpful, and actually even helped us get back an electric toothbrush & toiletries that we left there! Would recommend to anyone!

This beautiful historic lodge sits feet from the shores of Lake Superior. We had a wonderful stay!

  • 5 of 5

Cedar Cliff hosted our married couples winter retreat and it was a perfect venue, brimming with old world charm, yet entirely functional. Everything was wonderful, from the six uniquely decorated bedrooms to the dining room view of a lake superior sunrise! From the rustic stone fireplace to the close proximity to outdoor fun (Lutsen skiing and miles of hiking trails/state parks are minutes away). Two thumbs way up. We will be back!
