* Update As of spring 2017 we have replaced the washer and dryer, the dishwasher and the old mattresses. The squeak in the bed has been repaired and we have updated/replenished the kitchen ware. The queen air mattress has been replaced with four roll-away beds equipped with memory foam mattresses *

We live in a charming 19th century farm house on the coast of Maine. We have a view of the water from the front of the house where you can see lobster boats motoring by. Our back yard is rich with apple trees, blueberry bushes, and blackberry brambles. In the house there are three bedrooms, including a fully renovated master bedroom, a full bathroom upstairs with a great claw-foot tub, a fully renovated downstairs bathroom which includes a very large, mosaic tiled shower with two shower heads and a door leading to a fieldstone and cedar outdoor shower, a beautifully renovated kitchen including a built in breakfast booth, and cozy sitting area, all stainless steel appliances and three full walls of windows looking out to the water, side yard and back yard and patio, dining room, two living rooms-one facing the water side of the house, and one facing the backyard, and a gorgeous fieldstone patio with outdoor grilling dining and a cozy bistro nook.

About Suzanne Jones

My ex husband and I bought this house in 1992 and renovated the home in 2003. This home is very close to my heart because both of my children (now aged 15 and 20) were born in the house. My oldest son was born in the master bedroom on October 2nd 1996, and my younger son was born in the bedroom above the kitchen on October 1st 2001 (we had a birthing tub in there!) The maple tree in the back yard (on the right of the garden) was planted just a few days after my oldest was born. We moved to Boston in 2003 and I founded a non-profit organization called yogaHOPE and developed a mind body program for female survivors of trauma. I love my work because it takes me all over the world, from the U.S., to Haiti, Kenya and Iran. I try to visit this home at least once a year and am happy to share it with others.

Suzanne Jones purchased this cottage in 1992

Why Suzanne Jones chose Bar Harbor - Mount Desert Island

This property is beautifully renovated yet still quirky. Please read the description very carefully so that you are informed of all the little ins and outs of this house. Some things that I think are really special about this house are the downstairs shower (the stones on the wall and that make up the outdoor shower are all from our back yard), the HUGE window in the bedroom (bring eye masks if you don't like early morning light) and the terrace and gardens (lots of blueberries on the bushes if you come in late July/August). The location of the house is great, as Bar Harbor is extremely crowded in the summer season and after a busy day of hiking and activities it feels great to come back to someplace quiet and beautiful. The entrance to the park is just a couple of miles away as well, allowing you to enter the park without driving through Bar Harbor. While bigger groups may have to get creative about sleeping arrangements, the house never feels crowded because there are so many different sitting areas.

What makes this cottage unique

For me, the absolute best thing about this house is the kitchen. I put a lot of care and love into the design and spend all my time in the kitchen whenever I'm at the house.

  • * Please note* There are only three bedrooms in this house and beds enough for 8 people (with 2 per bed). This house can sleep up to 12 using four roll away beds (provided) and more if people wanted to sleep on couches (2). This is an old and funky house (built 1856) and as such it has some quirks. One quirk is that guests in the yellow room have to pass through the master to access the upstairs bathroom. However, access to downstairs bathroom does not require passing through another bedroom. Master bedroom is very large and can sleep a family of four (two in queen bed and two in twin trundle). There is also a port-a-crib in the closet and probably enough left over room for a roll-away or two. It is the biggest bedroom in the house. The laundry area is in the master bedroom as well. Both the master and the guest bedroom have access to the upstairs bathroom without passing through another bedroom. WE NO LONGER HAVE A YURT ON OUR PROPERTY.

Beautiful Property. Great setting and location!

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time! The property is terrific and we would return in a heartbeat. We enjoyed the herb garden and blueberries and watching the deer and fox pass through. The only things we could suggest would be some new bedding and upgraded cookware. We definitely recommend this property!

Charming house, nice location

  • 4 of 5

We stayed one week in the Jones house (6 adults and 3 children) and had a great time. The house is charming and lovely on a quiet street but only about 10 mins drive to the downtown. The breakfast/kitchen and connected sitting area is a great feature of the house overlooking the bay across the street, and we spent most in-house time there. The indoor/outdoor showers on the 1st floor is quite special. The backyard patio with a grill and a table for up to 6/7 people is very nice for outdoor dinning and we made very good use of it. You can grab blueberries from the plants. The dinning/great room in the middle has a lot of space and characters. The front porch is lovely. I would give the house 5 stars if there is a shower in the bathroom on the 2nd floor. Because this is an old house, the 2nd floor bathroom setup is not ideal and people in the front bedroom have to go through the master bedroom to use the bathroom otherwise have to go downstairs. There are two stairways to the 2nd floor and the stairs in the middle is old and very narrow. While the big window in the master bed looks nice, it's very bright in the morning with sun rising. However these by no means affect much our stay and enjoying the house. I give it a solid 4.5!

Owner's Response: Dear Henry, Thank you for your lovely review! I always appreciate when guests can accept the quirks of the house (it was built in 1856!) and appreciate the home as a whole. It was a pleasure speaking with you and I look forward to possibly hosting you again sometime. All the best, Sue

Spacious ocean view cottage with charming gardens

  • 5 of 5

This house truly exceeded our expectations. Rented for a bachelorette weekend, we were comfortably able to fit eleven women with room to spare. This house embodied costal charm offering many large windows with views of the ocean accross the street. We were all throughly impressed with the spacious bedrooms as well as common areas. The indoor/outdoor shower was something out of a dream with flowering vines hanging over the wooden gate. The porpety manager was prompt and helpful when we reached our regarding an issue with the bathroom door sticking. We hope to come back again, thank you!

Beautiful property and great location for Bar Harbor

  • 5 of 5

This house supposedly sleeps 10-11, but I'd say seven is the max for comfort, as none of the couches fold out. This is a beautifully restored house. Great Kitchen and laundry facilities, and beautiful grounds. View of the water across the road. Great location on the north side of the island for easy access to Acadia. Only small complaints were: some door knobs sketchy or missing, dirty dishes in the dishwasher when we arrived, and not the nicest pillows or linens. Overall a fabulous experience for our family of seven.

Bar Harbor Maine is located on Mount Desert Island which is the home to Acadia National Park. This is one of the most beautiful and popular spots in the whole country. People visit Bar Harbor from all over the world and though the village can be quite crowded in the month of August, our house is located 5 miles down the road and feels quite serene even in the busiest months. For further information on the Park, the Internet has lots of information. Activities in and around the park include hiking, biking, swimming, sailing and kayaking, **Whale Watching** (lots of whales in the summer) , rock climbing, canoeing, bird watching and lots more!
