The Gables is a large, Grade II listed, Cotswold stone property, dating back to the 17th century. Most of the rooms in the house have beautiful views of the local countryside, as does the large, private garden. The house is located in the small village of Uley, in the heart of the South-West Cotswolds countryside, close to the well known market towns of Nailsworth and Stroud. As well as being well placed for exploring the surrounding countryside, The Gables is also within easy reach of popular destinations, such as Bath, Cheltenham and Cirencester.

The house has recently been extensively refurbished by its owners, to enhance the comfort for guests, whilst maintaining traditional character features, such as wooden beams and beautiful inglenook fireplaces, including one real fire and one with an original bread oven. The character of the house is complemented by its modern facilities, including wireless internet access, a flatscreen TV with DVD player and a well equipped kitchen.

The house sleeps a maximum of 16 people, in eight bedrooms, with three bathrooms. There is a large garden, with beautiful views, and off-street parking is available for six to eight cars. The Gables is ideal for groups of friends or family gatherings, offering peace and tranquility in a stunning location.

House Rules

Booking and payment

Character Cottages is a marketing agency and we do not own or manage any of the cottages listed on our website. Bookings made via us form a legal agreement directly between you and the property owner.

For bookings commencing more than 10 weeks in advance, a 30% non-refundable deposit is required to confirm the booking. The balance payment is then due 10 weeks prior to arrival.

All payments are made subject to the cancellation policy set out in the standard Booking Conditions.

Security deposits

A security deposit of £300 is payable, which is returned after the letting period, subject to an inspection of the property. For the avoidance of doubt, guests are requested to leave the property in a reasonable condition, consistent with the property's appearance upon arrival. In the event that the owners, or their appointed housekeepers, have to spend additional time tidying up after your departure, then the cost of this extra time may be deducted from your security deposit. The security deposit is payable prior to arrival at the property, via a bank transfer or a valid debit or credit card.

Occupancy

The maximum occupancy of the property, including its grounds, is 16 guests, at any point during your stay. Unauthorised over occupancy is a breach of our terms and conditions and may result in the cancellation of your booking and additional charges. Please consult us prior to booking if you wish to discuss the possibility of having more than 16 guests at the property.

Infants who sleep in a cot do not count towards the occupancy figure, however, due to space restrictions, the occupancy figure may only be exceeded by up to four additional infants.

Pets

Up to two dogs are accepted, at a cost of £25 per booking per dog.

For the comfort of future guests, we ask that dogs remain downstairs, stay off the furniture and that no trace of a dog remains after your departure.

Bed linen and towels

Bed linen and towels are provided for guests.

Arrival and departure times

The standard arrival time at The Gables is after 4pm and the standard departure time is by 10am, however there is significant flexibility for two night weekend bookings. For two night breaks starting on a Friday, you may depart as late as you wish on the Sunday (please contact us if you wish to extend your stay to the Monday morning). Likewise, for two night stays starting on a Saturday, you may arrive as early as you wish on the Saturday.

Access is via a key safe, therefore it does not matter if you are arriving late at night.

Bedroom 2: Single bed, with a further pull-out single bed

Bedroom 3 (with Jack & Jill bathroom): King size bed

2nd floor:

Bedroom 5: Double bed

Bedroom 6: 2x single beds

Bedroom 7: King size bed

Bedroom 8: King size bed

Bathrooms

1st floor:

Bedroom 1 en-suite: bath with overhead shower, toilet, wash basin and heated towel rail;

Bedroom 3 en-suite (a Jack & Jill bathroom, shared with bedroom 4): bath with overhead shower, toilet and wash basin.

2nd floor:

Family bathroom: Walk-in shower, toilet and wash basin.

Heating, fuel and logs

The property has a gas central heating system.

Electricity and gas are included in the letting price. There is a fireplace in the ground floor living room and an initial basket of logs is provided between October and April. Further supplies of logs are available locally.

Services provided

The property has free wireless internet access and a flatscreen TV with a DVD player. A telephone is also provided (with an international bar).

Mobile phone reception is variable at the property and can be poor on some networks.

Parking

The property has a driveway, with parking space for six to eight cars. Please note that with a full drive cars would primarily be parked end-to-end.

Housekeeping

Where a letting exceeds nine nights, a mid-stay clean, bed linen and towel change may be included in the price. Please check with us to confirm. Additional housekeeping services may be available on request.

Child friendly facilities

Two travel cots (without linen) and two high chairs are provided.

The property's garden is enclosed, however, it is quite large, many areas are not visible from the house and there is a stream running through the garden, therefore young children should be supervised at all times.

Initial consumables

A small quantity of initial consumables is provided for your convenience (eg. tea, coffee, sugar, dishwasher tablets, washing up liquid, soap, washing powder, toilet rolls, etc), however, you should not expect the quantity of these provisions to be sufficient for the duration of your stay.

Accessibility, health and safety

This is an old, Grade II listed property and has many character features, including some narrow and steep stairs, low beams and multiple floors, which could pose difficulty to guests with limited mobility, or carrying babies, both in terms of their general movement and their ability to quickly exit the house in the event of an emergency.

The smoke and CO detectors operate on a sound only basis and, therefore, those who have serious impairment of hearing may not be able to hear the alarm systems and could be at risk.

There is a stream running through the garden of the property and there are a number of drops in the garden that are not fenced off. Additionally, there is an open gateway, which leads out towards the road at the front of the house and, consequently, young children should be supervised in the garden at all times.

Smoking

No smoking is permitted throughout the property.

The Cotswolds are a range of hills in west-central England, sometimes called the "Heart of England". The name Cotswold means "sheep enclosure in rolling hillsides".

The Cotswolds are characterised by attractive small towns and villages, built of the underlying Cotswold stone (a yellow oolitic limestone). In the Middle Ages the wool trade made the Cotswolds prosperous and some of this money was put into the building of churches, leaving the area with a number of large handsome Cotswold stone "wool churches". The area remains affluent, which has encouraged the establishment of many high quality pubs, restaurants and antique shops.

Car: The Gables is easily accessed by car, being located relatively close to the M5, the M4 and the A46, which runs north-south between Cheltenham and Bath.

Train: The nearest major railway station to The Gables is Stroud (approximately 7 miles away), which has regular, direct services to London Paddington, with a typical journey time of approximately 90 minutes. There is a taxi rank at the station.
