We first came to this area for our holidays just to enjoy the peace and quiet, the fresh air and the general 'well being' this area of France offers to you. After one such holiday we decided it was time, so we went home, packed, came back and have never looked back.
Lynn Richards purchased this house in 2008
The property is in a tiny village, very french, feels very safe and secure and is just what you need to get away from it all without having to give up on 21st century living. The house is cosy in the winter, cool in the summer, is ideally situated to visit lots of different areas of the region and country.
It is a little house, for 2 people its perfect, cosy, with every comfort of staying home from home.
This area of France is a little hidden gem, very pretty, very tranquil, very green, hardly any traffic - apart from the odd tractor or herd of cows moving to fresh grazing. If you need a break away from the hurly burly of modern life [without missing your creature comforts] then this is the place to come. The village is quite small, just a nice stroll away from our local auberge which serves sets meals each day from locally sourced meat and vegetables from their own gardens. [I see it growing as I walk my dog]. On the walking front, lots of lovely green lanes and walks can be started right from the front door, we provide maps and notes so you wont get lost.
To venture further afield we are just on the doorstep of the Auvergne and the magical volcanic massif central area, during the winter this is our nearest ski station and in the summer a wonderful place to walk. You can now take a train ride to the top of the Puy de Dome to admire the panoramic views it offers plus the chance to marvel at the paragliders swooping around the mountain top. For those who don't have a head for heights take a trip to Lake Vassivierre where you can find a beach, swimming areas, water taxis to take you to the island where there are lovely walks around outdoor art installations, or eat at the shoreside restaurant and watch the world sail by.
The local town has everything you may need for a stay, supermarket, petrol station, bank, chemist, bakery, butchers, and is a lovely little place just to have a mooch around. In August a whole day is taken up with a brocante which fills all the square and roads leading to and from.
Lots of tiny villages and pretty towns are dotted around the area within easy reach of a morning or afternoons visit, Aubusson is the UNESCO site for French tapistery it has the most lovely little cobbles streets and curio shops, Felletin has a super market on Friday mornings, Crocq stands high on a hill and has magnificent towers of an ancient castle that you can climb for the most outstanding view of the region. Bigger towns and cities include Cleremont Ferraund which has a black granite cathedral, is very chic, lots of lovely restaurants and little lanes to explore. Montlucon has larger stores for those in need of retail therapy!
The area is a haven for fishing, bird watchers, walkers, artists, photographers, those in need of a peaceful haven......... the list could go on!
