Good, unpretentious lodging option

  • 4 of 5

Good basic place to stay. No frills but it's clean, the ac works and the kitchen is decent. Well located near Georgetown and about equidistant to either end of the island. The caretakers are great and are easily accessible to offer advice or help with anything you might need. The wifi was pretty spotty but was decent when it was working. Not the kind of place you'd travel to hang out in but if you need a cheap, clean and functional place to crash this is a really good option.

We had a wonderful stay in the blue cottage! Priscilla and William were so helpful & responsive. The beach is spectacular (sea turtles swim close to shore)! The kayak & bikes were so much fun!

Location: Properties are located a 5-10 min walk from a public beach access. Be aware that you must walk alongside the main hwy/road and cars speed by at around 40+ mph, no sidewalk; I would not feel safe with small children on foot. The public beach access is down a steepish and sandy (therefore slippery) hill, which makes transporting items for a beach picnic less than logistically easy.

Amenities: The bikes are nice in theory, but you will need a car rental to explore and get around. We thought we could at least ride the bikes to hoopers bay beach, but then there's the problem of trekking them down and up that steep hill- again, inconvenient. We were also excited about the free kayaks but realized that we wouldn't be able to carry them to the beach (too far), nor tow them on our sedan-sized car rental.

Condition: The basic necessities are there and cleanliness was fine. We stayed at other rentals on the islands where we felt at home; here its clearly just a rental. One of the air conditioners was broken upon our arrival and the heat made it very difficult to sleep in that room. It took a few days to get that fixed and by that time we were leaving. There is no landline for phone calls. We thought this would be fine because internet service was advertised and we were traveling with a small netbook which we could use for phone calls. But service was unreliable and went out after our first day. We had to drive into town to make calls to coordinate some of our activities, again inconvenient.

Service: We felt really disappointed by the service we received, esp for what we were paying. The owner was trying to work on the AC repair and on arranging a promised car rental that was never delivered and ironically asked if she could call us at her own property! A landline should be basic service to contact your guests and respond to their needs. We expressed our dissatisfaction and didn't feel she adequately responded nor shared in our concerns. We didn't even receive her communication until the internet started working the evening before our departure. Although the caretaker seems like a kind person, we didn't receive much help from him in response to our concerns either. He is more just there to take care of the property, not the customers.

To admit responsibility, this was a very last minute travel arrangement on our behalf. Had I done more research, I hope I would have found something that was worth more for what we paid for. My advice- keep looking!

Owner's Response: We apologize for the inconvenience caused to this guest. All these “issues” were dealt with while they were still at the cottage. We know that savvy travelers are able to discern legitimate complaints. That being said, we will address the “issues” stated. We are glad to hear that the guests found the cottage to be clean, and all the necessities in place. We strive to make our cottages feel “homely”, but realize that this is of personal preference. Past guests have described the cottage as “homely”. The cottage has 3 a/c units; one of the smaller units did stop working. We had the only a/c repair company on the Island work on this immediately. The a/c was up and running by Monday. We recognize that things move slowly on the Island, and it’s impossible to get things done in a “New York” minute. We do not offer landlines, but do offer cell phone rentals as adverted. The DSL, internet service, provided by the island’s telephone company has unscheduled outages. However, it has improved over the years. We are self-service cottages. There is no front desk, however, our care-taker, is next door and is available and very attentive to the needs of the guests. He has been known to respond to guests in the middle of the night, including taking them to the medical clinic. He is known and respected on the island. As a service, a rental car was secured for the guest. They were informed that there were no cars available on the day of their arrival, but would be delivered to the cottage the next day about lunchtime. The car was delivered; however, the guest had taken it upon themselves to go to the airport to rent a car from another company. They apologized profusely to the car company for their impatience. We provide bicycles, kayaks, snorkeling gear, and beach set up. Our facilities person will set it up. The facilities person offered to take the kayaks to the beach and the guests declined. Because of deforestation, which caused land erosion, it changed the navigability of the beach access. This matter has been reported to the local government, and they have promised to improve the access with steps. The cottages are reasonably priced. This is attested to previous reviews on this site and others. Exuma is an Out Island; it is rustic and has friendly people. It is laid back, there are no traffic lights, fast-food restaurants, and it only has one main street, and pedestrians don’t have a problem navigating this island “main” road. This is an authentic Baha

Great Home away from Home

We recently stayed at the Yellow Elder cottage in Hoopers Bay Villas and had one the most relaxing and wonderful vacations in years. We are a family of 3 including a 9-year old daughter. The cottage was well you equipped with all amenities, including a well stocked kitchen, and is perfectly suited for groups of upto 4. While the beach access is not direct, the view is stunning once you get there with a beautiful sliver of sand almost like having your own private beach.

We would highly recommend taking a boat to the nearby islands like Stanley Caye as the views are spectacular. We took a taxi into sleepy Georgetown to see the Junkanoo Festival celebrations and headed to Stocking Island for food and drink at Cafe Peace and Plenty. We found the people to be extremely friendly and readily opening up to conversation. Food choices are limited for vegetarians but excellent for seafood aficionados. There are no restaurant chains on the Exumas, fully earning their keep as one of the Out Island chains.

Overall, an excellent choice for an individual or family who wants to get away from it all and enjoy island life in a tranquil setting.

Home-Away-From-Home Near Hooper's Bay

  • 4 of 5

We stayed in the Blue Marlin villa and appreciated having accomodations with all the amenities of home, coupled with convenient proximity to clean, clear, swimming-pool-like Hooper's Bay. If a small problem arose, the onsite caretaker was quick and friendly to resolve it. Sue is attentive to her renters, and I would definitely recommend the villas to others. At the bay, we had neon trumpet fish and a huge black manta ray swim right next to us; we saw dolphins in the distance. Part of the beach access is sort of steep and slippery with pine needles, palm leaves, round sticks and rocks. I'm a very non-athletic klutz, but handled it alright as long as my husband held my hand. The average person probably wouldn't have much of a problem. The bay is certainly worth a little effort! It was very memorable and we loved it! Thank you Sue and Bill!

Hoopers Bay Villas

The Cottage was everything it was described to be, clean, and fully equipped. The beach was a little further to walk to than we were told but still just across the road. Great vacation and a lovely cottage to return to at the end of each day. The island is beautiful and friendly.
