About Ann

We have lived in France for the past 5 years. We have embraced the culture and love the wonderful experiences of French life, from bottleing our own wine to foraging for the exquisite- tasting cepe mushroom. Each season brings fetes and festivals of what nature provides.

Ann purchased this cottage in 2012

Why Ann chose Charente

After visiting many areas we decided that the Charente was visually appealing and offered the lifestyle we desired.

What makes this cottage unique

The house setting is tranquil yet close enough for all the necessities of life. The stone walls give it real charm and authenticity. There is even a cornerstone that tells us the house was built in 1833, around Napoleons time!

Highly recommended gite and superb location

  • 5 of 5

Spent a lovely week in this well equipped and beautifully situated gite. It is a wonderful centre for visiting cognac, Bordeaux and the western dordogne with their delicious food and wines. When not visiting these areas, it was a delight to be able to relax, using the swimming pool and enjoying the peaceful and beautiful countryside and pretty garden. Hosts were most welcoming and helpful with advice for trips. Highly recommended and we would certainly come again.

Car: recommended

Monday Market day in Chalais. Soak up local culture, food and gifts.

Aubeterre sur Drone is a must see village rated as one of the most beautiful in France. There is a Monolithic Church to visit and the town square is right out of a movie set with cafes shaded by leafy trees. There is also a sandy beach, and the tourism office provides 1/2 or whole day children's' activities to keep the little ones occupied. As well as tennis courts, canoes and kayaks.

Wineries of Bordeaux and St. Emillion are an easy drive away as is Cognac, where you can take tours of Remy, Hennessy or Couvosier cognac houses.

For those who like to be physically active there are scenic cycling ways, horse back riding, golf or just leisurely walks. We can even arrange cycle hire with prior notice if you forgot to bring your own.

Brantome, known as the Venice of France is very lovely and has a stunning Abbey. There are also caves with prehistoric drawing.

Angouleme, with it's magnificent cathedral, is about a 45 minute drive and holds a Classic Car Rally each September. With a race around the city wall ramparts .

Royan and the surrounding area offers the Atlantic Ocean beaches. There are beaches for surfers, kiddies, or even naturists!

Should you wish to relax at the house you can simply sit back at the pool, read , play games or just enjoy the far reaching countryside views.

You'll have a garden and BBQ with a table and chairs for 6 to sit and enjoy some local wine and cheese from your market forays.

We provide a welcome basket of our freshly laid eggs and home cured bacon and other basics, so your first breakfast is all sorted.

The gite has central heating so you can visit any time of year. Autumn is particularly beautiful. In september each year the city of Angouleme( 30 minutes away) holds the Circuit des Remparts, which is a classic car exposision and race through the remparts of the old part of Angouleme. There is also a ralley which often brings the claasic cars right through our town of Chalais as they stop to have lunch at the castle.
