Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 2 nights

About the property

Cottage, 1 Bedroom + Other (See Description), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 6)

Blue Heaven Cabin is located in Vida, Oregon. The cottage is picturesquely nestled along the shore of the McKenzie River, and is decorated in a rustic yet elegant style. The cottage was built in the early 1940’s, and has a grace and charm reminiscent of a more gentle era. While we have maintained the rustic touches of that time, we have also incorporated some modern conveniences.

Cozy Accommodations

The cottage has a fully equipped kitchen, charcoal grill, fireplace in the living room, full bathroom (including tub and shower) and central heat. Beautifully refinished original fir floors. It features windows on the entire river side-affording an unparalleled view of the white water below. French doors open from the living room onto a spacious private deck directly over the water. We invite you to relax and refresh in the cool, green Willamette National Forest-and even throw in your fishing line. If you keep a sharp eye out, you may even see Osprey and Eagles.

The one bedroom can sleep up to 6 people comfortably, with a king bed in the bedroom, a queen sleeper sofa in the great room, a queen raised air bed and a twin fold out bed. We include most everything to make your stay convenient and enjoyable—from dishes to linens and towels. All you will need to bring is your clothes, food, and yourselves... but don't forget to pack your fishing tackle!

Rustic cottage right on the McKenzie

  • 4 of 5

This location was incredible if you want to be right on the river. And I do mean right on the river. While everyone talks about the soothing river sounds, I have to admit, with the recent rains, the river was swollen and very fast- so the roar of the river took a while to adjust to. The view was fabulous. We were surprised about the size of the cabin - it is actually larger than the pictures would lead you to believe. It was very clean and comfortable, with everything one might need to spend a weekend -even great shampoo and conditioner! Very charming and what we expected. Of course, nothing is perfect for everyone- so we do have a few suggestions:

1. Its time for some new pots and pans- there are not a lot of restaurants around (especially in winter) and we were looking forward to just staying in anyway- but were very disappointed in the pots and pans available - both in number and quality.

2. While its great to disconnect, we did not have any cell service at all- so if there had been any emergency, we would not have been able to call any of the emergency numbers provided.

Perhaps that was just our provider- not sure, but absolutely no service.

3. We really struggled starting a fire with the wood provided - perhaps it was too green?

Overall, our stay was comfortable and a good location to enjoy the trails and forests around the McKenzie.

Owner's Response: Donna, I am very happy you enjoyed your stay overall. Thank you for your comments and what can be done to make our guests’ stay more enjoyable. The owner did just buy some new pots and pans, but will replace or add the ones that are needed. We have found that Verizon works best, so well in fact that you can even stream video as they have built cell towers in the area where the other carriers have not. I am sorry you had trouble starting a fire. I will make sure that there is enough kindling being given since the wood has seasoned for two years. Also it does help when starting the fire to crack the patio door open a bit to make the draft go up the chimney. Again, thank for you for taking time to write a review. We hope to see you again in the future.

Had a very relaxing stay. Enjoyed all the pictures on the walls. Very nicely furnished. So much nicer then staying in a motel. Kitchen was very well stocked. Place was very clean. Would definitely suggest it to anyone whom just wanted a nice relaxing getaway.

I Thank-you so much for fixing my reservation mistake, had a very relaxing birthday here.

Bed was very comfortable, just all in all a nice place to relax. We loved the cabin!! All the windows are just great. Not one single complaint.

Amazing right on river. Very nice cabin. Only negative is the highway. Otherwise it's a 5 star.

  • 4 of 5

Really nice cozy cabin. Complete with everything, even washer and dryer. Deck is right over the river. Very nicely decorated. It rained the whole time we were there but had a fire going, read books, hiked MacKenzie river trail, got soaked, came back, showered, used dryer. Excellent time.

Feels as Cozy as it looks

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay here! If/when we make it back to Oregon we will revolve our trip around dates this cabin is open! I don't think anything in life gets better than coffee on that deck in the early am and listening to the river flow by. Terry was super helpful in answering our questions leading up to the trip!

The VIEW is to die for!

  • 5 of 5

The cabin as well as the setting are just delightful. The deck is the icing on the CAKE!

We never once ate inside; breakfast, lunch and dinner in the dark were outside on the nice glass table with new deck chairs. Plenty of room on that deck for a grill (we brought our little propane camping grill), other seating options.

First, the cabin is very clean, and I like the wood floors over 25 year old carpets. Very well-appointed kitchen with a spiffy and efficient ceramic top, full-sized fridge, also very efficient, and CLEAN. We actually never really had to leave the cabin - everything we needed was there. When we travel to lodgings with kitchen - we cook! Although small - it had the right mod cons and we cooked up a storm - Escargot one night, grilled tuna loin the next...

Now, the BED! Oh, that BED.....So comfy, the right kind of linens, blankets and pillows, and a closed window allows for just the right amount of subtle roar from the McKenzie River .

There is a downside to the parking, which is RIGHT on 126. Kinda nerve-wracking when you are out there loading/unloading your vehicle. However, traffic noise dwindles way down at night, and truthfully, we lived on the deck at the back so it was never an issue for us.

We were prepared with music for the boom stereos (2), and DVD's for the TV. (And since we were in Cabin 4 and there was no one in 3...we played our music loud enough to hear over the river AND the traffic.

Very hot water and good pressure for the kitchen and the shower.

We got serenaded at dusk by the resident American Dipper from several of his favorite rocks who seemed unconcerned by the very fast-moving river, and he really SANG...something rather unusual, according to my passionate birder hubby.

Boaters, fishermen/women, tour guides and their passengers sailed by occasionally and waved at the lazy people on the deck who usually had a wine glass in-hand.

We did leave the cabin sometimes: Clear Lake is incredible, rent a boat for an hour. The picnic tables under all the trees have Stellar Jays and Gray Jays who will take food from your hand and just stand there on your fingers for 5 seconds or so - absolutely brazen! Sahalie Falls has a great trail (1 mile) and views of several falls, and the water is so blue and pristine.

Finally, there were absolutely no negatives for us in the 4 nights we spent at Blue Heaven Cabin #4. We almost never return to a lodging - always wanting something new - BUT - we will go back there!

Guestbook comments from the owner

As always, we loved our stay at Heaven's Gate. Highlights included a white faced owl, herons, catching 3 rainbow trout, and sharing a glass of wine with new friends. We are greatful for such a relaxing break from our busy everyday lives.

The McKenzie is well known for its' pristine beauty and fly fishing. You can fly fish along a strip of river within walking distance or fish for trout right off the deck. Many hiking and bike trails close by. Enjoy one of the hot springs located nearby. Take a rafting excursion, view the covered bridges, or take a drive on one of the many scenic routes. Hike the waterfalls. Watch the eagles and osprey fish the river right from your deck. Relax and wavy at the rafters and boaters floating by. Here are a few of our recommendations:

Terwilliger Hot Springs (Also known as Cougar Hot Springs) is one of those places that you hate to tell others about. You like it so much that you want to keep it a secret from the rest of the world. Simply put, this is a magical spot hidden within this super-natural forest. Terwilliger Hot Springs are a fantastic place to soak away anxiety and stress that you may have brought with you from the city. It is also a great place to relax after a long hike, mountain bike ride or a day of skiing at Hoodoo. The h ot springs emerge from a small cave (you can climb into it) and flows out into 5 cascading pools. As the water flows down into the lower pools the temperature gets a little cooler.

Hours: Open year round from dawn to dusk.

As you pass the reservoir on your left take a moment to enjoy the sweeping views. You should see a small shack/kiosk on the right and a parking area on the left. Terwilliger Hot Springs is about 15 minutes from the cottage.

Park in the lot and walk on the path to the kiosk. There is a $6 per person day use fee.

Other Hot Springs

*For nice hot springs experience without fear of encountering naked people visit Belknap Hot Springs. It is not far away, it is further east up Hwy 126 between McKenzie Bridge and the Ranger Station. Day use fee $10-15. Hot springs are piped into a swimming pool. Indoor changing rooms. This is approximately 20 minutes from the cottage

HooDoo Ski Bowl:

Great family friendly ski area features a new lodge, groomed trails and lift tickets under $50 Hoodoo Ski Area sits on the summit of Oregon’s Santiam Pass and is Oregon’s most centrally located destination for winter sports enthusiasts. Just 45 minutes from the cottage, Hoodoo Ski Area offers more than 800 acres of terrain, 34 runs, five lifts and one of the largest tubing parks in the West. Founded in 1938, Hoodoo is Central Oregon’s original ski area and your destination for family-friendly fun in your backyard! The ski slopes are on a big, rounded butte, with lots of wide open terrain. So whether you prefer the deep and challenging powder of Hoodoo’s backside or the finely groomed runs of the front side, the majesty of Hoodoo’s location and fun of Hoodoo’s night skiing will bring you back again and again.

McKenzie River Waterfall Loop Trail

Sahalie Falls and Koosah Falls in one awesome hiking experience.

Length: 3 miles

Elevation: Trail is at 2800 ft. elevation.

Season: Spring to Fall

Usage: Heavy

Difficulty: Moderate

Water: Potable water available at Ice Cap Campground.

How to get there: From the cottage take Highway 126 east approximately 32 miles to the parking areas of Sahalie Falls and Koosah Falls Viewpoints.

Trail Description: This trail is part of the McKenzie River National Recreation Trail. It follows the McKenzie River as it flows over two spectacular waterfalls and cascades into whitewater.

Other Area Waterfalls

A vast number of rivers and streams are birthed from the depths of central Oregon’s majestic Cascade Mountains. These many rivers create a dazzling display of water features throughout this chain of volcanic mountains. These water features often are displayed as spectacular waterfalls.

Koosah Falls / Sahalie Falls

Tamolitch Falls (aka Tamolitch Blue Pool)

Proxy Falls

Rainbow Falls

Tamolitch Falls-Tamolitch Blue Pool

Once a majestic waterfall, the McKenzie River has changed course and gone underground a few miles up stream. The river only flows over the falls a few times a year, the rest if the time the water emerges from the rocks underwater in the basin of waterfall pool.

Tamolitch Blue Pool - Tamolitch FallsThis is a unique site. While it is rare to see a large waterfall ledge completely dry, the color and composition of the pool is also unique.

One of the first things you’ll notice is the color of the water. The topaz blue color of the water is almost iridescent – like a blue anti-freeze. The water is so clear that is seems to be only about 5 ft deep – yet closer inspection will reveal that in many spots its over 30 ft deep. So pure in fact that you’d swear the water wasn’t moving – yet at the end of this glass like pond – a volume of water rushes out as the McKenzie River is reborn. I did this hike for the first time last summer. The photos you see are real. The water is the most amazing color.

Tokatee Golf Club is just 10 miles away with views of the Three Sisters Mountains.
