|Minimum Stay||2 - 7 nights|
This beautiful mountain retreat is nestled in 8 acres of hardwood trees and mountain laurel and is right on the bluff with a gorgeous view. Located just minutes from The University of the South and St. Andrew's-Sewanee campuses, this is a great place for alumni and parents to stay when visiting the mountain.
For people who are looking for a romantic get-away, Bairnwick Too makes it easy to unwind by the fireplace, in the screened-in porch, on the deck, or swinging in the hammock. There are several restaurants, dinner theaters, and nature trails in the area. For families looking for a place to let the kids hike, bike, climb, cave, swim, and explore, the Sewanee-Monteagle mountain is a great destination. It is less than 2 hours from Nashville, 1 hour from Chattanooga, 3 hours from Atlanta, and 2 1/2 hours from Birmingham.
The house blends in nicely with its natural surroundings and is well appointed with hardwood and ceramic tile floors, floor to ceiling casement windows, and ceiling fans in every room. The living room has a wood burning stone fire place, satellite with high definition and a new big screen TV, DVD, VCR, stereo with connections for your i-Pod, leather couch, and plenty of chairs including a zero-gravity chair. The dining table seats 8 and the kitchen is complete with everything you should need. The master bedroom has a king bed, TV, and private bathroom with a walk-in shower and heated tiled floors. The second bedroom has a double bed with a couch that can double for a single bed suitable for a child. The other bathroom has a jet-tub and shower. The third bedroom is located downstairs accessed by a spiral staircase and has a double bed, a sleeper sofa, and two trundle beds.
The deck overlooks the bluff and has a chimnea for cooler nights. The screened-in porch has a porch swing, lounge chairs, ceiling fans, outside speakers, and a wrought iron dining table for four. The recirculating waterfall flows just a few feet away and the hammock over looks the bluff. The driveway is lined with fruit trees and wild flowers abound. Deer, hawks, song birds, and crickets will keep you company.
Bairnwick Too is named after my grandparents’ house, which is now the Bairnwick Women's Center at Sewanee. Bairnwick is Gaelic and means 'House of Children.' We seek to retain this spirit and Bairnwick Too is a wonderful place for families to gather. The house is located in Deep Woods, which is behind St. Andrews-Sewanee School and overlooks the same valley as seen from Green's View. The surrounding woods are fun to explore and there are plenty of trees to climb. The 'Res' is only a couple of miles away and is the best swimming lake on the mountain. There are numerous hiking trails and nature walks. The Perimeter Trail is fabulous for longer hikes and mountain biking. The Fowler Center in Sewanee is a great exercise facility and offers day-passes and indoor tennis courts. Sewanee also has a wonderfully unique golf course with great views.
Please note that you must be over 25 years old to rent and you must be in attendance. Due to the bluff and 70 foot drop-off, parents will need to provide appropriate supervision of children at all times and the house may not be appropriate for families with small children. There is not a fence and everybody will need to exercise caution around the edge of the bluff.

I grew up in Sewanee near Morgan Steep for those familiar with the area. So when we drew up our list of features we desired the most, we knew what we wanted: a gorgeous bluff view with an abundance of rock outcroppings in a wooded setting where we could watch the sunset each night. We also wanted a house that is open and inviting so it brings everyone together. A large screened-in porch and wood burning fireplace were also must-haves. In short, we wanted a place where we can relax, kick back, enjoy nature and spending time with friends and family.
The Owner purchased this house in 2007
We wanted a place in the mountains that was easy to get to on the weekends. For people just looking for a get-away weekend in the mountains where you can leave work at 4:00 from Nashville, Birmingham, Atlanta, or Chattanooga and be at the house by 7:00, Sewanee can't be beat. For people with a 'Sewanee connection,' Bairnwick Too is a great place to hang out with your kid or fellow alumns. My father and grandfather were professors at the University of the South and my grandmother routinely opened her house (which is now the Women's Center)to dates, parents, former faculty, and other visitors to the University. So picking Sewanee to have a vacation house was an easy choice.
What we love about Sewanee is the variety of things you can do. There is always something going on in Sewanee from concerts, guest lecturers, plays, and sporting events sponsored by the university, to riding trails, mountain biking, golf, and tennis. There are dozens of hiking trails with beautiful wild flowers around Sewanee. The South Cumberland State Park has some of the best trails in the Southeast with great river walks and beautiful vista views. Foster Falls and Fall Creek Falls are spectacular. For the more adventuresome, the area offers excellent rock climbing and caving. Pearl's and High Point(formerly owned by Al Capone) are two of our favorite restaurants.
For a weekend getaway I don't know what else we could have want't.
We hosted one of our fellow lacrosse families over a long weekend at Sewanee. This house was perfect for two couples and visits from our Sewanee sons and a few of their friends. The views are spectacular and the house is well-equipped for hosting. We particularly enjoyed the secluded location that was only minutes from the Sewanee campus. Recommend this house if you want to relax while being involved in Sewanee activities.
This is such a special home. It is furnished with love and warmth, has breathtaking views , and every amenity you could want. We loved our time here, and enjoyed sitting on the deck and dining on the screened porch. I appreciated the well appointed kitchen as well. Thank you for sharing- we hope to be back.
What a great place! Conveniently located, great views and very well equipped. We stayed for a week and hiked and biked and swam in The Res (behind St. Andrews school, very nearby). The screen porch was our favorite! We spent lots of time out there enjoying the sound of the fountain and the lovely view. We loved being here and will definitely rent again. Thank you for sharing!
We were in Sewanee this past weekend for a family wedding and could have not found a better home to rent....the home is very clean and comfortable, the view is fantastic, we liked the deck and screened porch, the kitchen is very well equipped and the dining room and living room are spacious and our family enjoyed a fire in the fireplace. The water feature is beautiful and the setting is so nice and relaxing.
Thank you so much for renting your lovely mountain house to us this weekend. The view is breathtaking, the house perfectly appointed, and the location just right for a visit to Sewanee. The house was especially gracious as we arrived after dark on Thursday to find the front porch lights on, the fountain bubbling, and the hammock swing waiting for an occupant. The house is immaculate and everything in its place - whenever I thought to look for a specific item, I just went to where I thought it would be, and voila. Even the weather was unbelievable - 78° on July the Fourth. Did you order that up for us, too? We definitely plan to rent again when we come back to Sewanee.
