Great place to relax and enjoy the beach!

  • 5 of 5

Our family stayed at this home for a third year in a row and look forward to returning next year. This spacious cottage has plenty of room for our large family. We love using the beautiful beach. Kayaking and swimming all day and bonfires at night make it the perfect spot to enjoy Michigan in the summer. Our kiddos love watching the boats and freighters go by and getting up to watch a gorgeous sunrise. The newly updated inside made even our rainy days enjoyable.

Great stay!

  • 5 of 5

Our family stayed here and had a wonderful time! The house was fully stocked which was so helpful, from linens to games to kayaks. The two kayaks were wonderful to use, as well as the paddle boat. The view was spectacular, especially the sunrises. The yard, deck, and beach were perfect for the relaxation we were looking for. Shopping was just 5 minutes away which was convenient. Shari was so accommodating, and we would definitely stay here again!

Great location but the house had problems.

  • 2 of 5

We had a wonderful time with our family, mostly because we hung out on the beach. The host did provide water craft and lots of firewood for the fire pit on the beach. The grill worked great so we cooked and ate outside. There were lots tables and chairs to accommodate our friends and family.

The downside was that the house was dirty when we arrived. My husband had to vacuum up pet hair from the carpeted areas and wipe down the tables and other surfaces because they were dirty. The kitchen was well stocked but the dishes and pots and pans were dirty with food particles and grease. The front bedroom reeked of pet urine and the bedding was full of dog hair. The sheets may all have been washed but the blankets, comforters and pillows were smelly.

The worst problem is that the toilet backed up almost immediatly. I think we used it three times on the first evening we arrived (7pm ish) and by the next morning at 10am it wouldn’t flush. We contacted the owner and, basically, spent the day trying to help her remedy the situation. Meanwhile, we had to use an outhouse that was already sitting in the front driveway. It’s obvious to us now that the outhouse is a permanent fixture because of the issue with the toilet. The owner had someone come out late Friday to try and fix the toilet. He was not a professional plumber but between him and my husband they got it working. It worked all day the next day then backed up on again the following day. We contacted the owner and she offered to get a plumber out but, basically, we didn’t want to deal with a plumber on our vacation. We had already spent so much time dealing with it that we just told everyone to use the outhouse. It was gross and very inconvenient.

The last thing I want to say is that we were told, after we arrived, that there was a recent change in the city ordinance regarding vacation rentals. Essentially, the city doesn’t allow homeowners to rent out their properties for short term renters like us. The owner sent us, via email after we arrived, a time share agreement that her attorney had drawn up to remedy the new change. The agreement that we were asked to sign stated that we were part owners for the period of time of our stay. Of course we didn’t sign it.

Luckily, the neighbors were gracious and friendly.

All in all we had a great time but I wouldn’t rent this house again.

Nice

View from house to lake is blocked on the sunrise side by other houses, but overall the beach and yard is very nice.

Disappointed

  • 1 of 5

We were "encouraged" to use a portable potty outside the house instead of using the toilet and also suggested using the outside shower instead of the bathroom shower. If we had known that we would not have booked. Also the weather turned very hot the last few days and the 2 small room air conditioners were inadequate and could not keep the house cool, especially the living room.

We left the house neat and clean and no damage was done and we still have not received our damage deposit back. Very vey disappointed in this expensive booking. We will not book with Home Away every again!!!!!

Owner's Response: I just found this very poor review in my in box and was very surprised by the renters response to their stay. We met with the renters the day they checked in and went over the details of the home. We informed them that the rental was on a septic and if they had additional guests and relatives staying they would need to be aware of the amount of water use. There is a clean portable toilet and solar shower for additional guests and use. They were very satisfied with the home and conditions and indicated they also had a septic and was aware of the extra care needed. In addition the rental agreement provides the information regarding the limited use of water for parties over 5 due to the septic tank and limited field. The last 2 Days of the renters week was September 21-23 and were the hottest and most humid days of the whole summer. Temperatures were over 95 and the portable air conditioners in the bedroom and dinning room are not equipped to handle those high temperatures. I do have a number of floor fans and the deck and the lake is a great way to cool off on those unusual hot and humid days. I attempted to call the party a few times after they checked out to see how their stay was and to inform them they would be receiving their damage deposit a week latter because of the need to transfer the funds to pay pal. They never returned my call and they did receive their full damage deposit. I would encourage future renters to read the wonderful reviews of other renters and to call the owner for any additional questions or concerns.

The perfect girls weekend

  • 5 of 5

Spent the weekend up here a few weekends ago for my sisters bachelorette party! It was EVERYTHING we wanted! The cottage is spacious and well quipped with everything we needed and more. The back yard is absolutely amazing with the deck that overlooks the beautiful beach and water. And the beach is perfection- with plenty of chairs and tables, a bonfire pit and a paddle boat and kayaks. This place is a Gem and I will definelty be back!! Thank you Shari for being such a gracious host!
