About constance boys smith

I am French and Nicholas is English, we have two little boys and we live in London.

constance boys smith purchased this cottage in 1955

Why constance boys smith chose Shaftesbury

This cottage has been in Nicholas' family since 1955. We took ownership of it in September 2013. This is our family house and we love coming here when it is not rented out.

What makes this cottage unique

The house is warm and full of character, and does not look like an Ikea showroom. The surroundings are idyllic (and there are no neighbours), people are incredibly nice, and there are so many things to do and see in the area.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We spent a wonderful week in this beautiful cottage. Spacious, clean, with a wonderful garden and lots of space for us, our 5 children and our two dogs. Ideal setting "to recharge your batteries"; alone in the country side, but just a few minutes away from Semley Village, 15 Minutes from Shaftesbury and 40 minutes away from magic Stonehenge. The house has all the amenities you need for a tranquil "away from it all" holiday. The owner was very friendly and helpful through e-mail and telephone; the caretaker was always in reach in case of help, and the gardener was a nice person to chat with. We recommend this cottage to anyone who wants to spend time discovering and exploring Wiltshire and Dorset. We were just sorry that we didn't stay any longer.

Character and comfort

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed a lovely few days in this cottage. It was full of character and charm whilst being very welcoming, warm and cosy. It was perfect for a family get together and well equipped for everything we needed. The area is rural and quiet but there is plenty to do and some interesting places to visit nearby. We will certainly be back.

Charming but . . .

  • 3 of 5

Delightful cottage in a lovely quiet setting, but needs attention inside. Kitchen crockery and glassware was mostly chipped and in need of washing before use. Rugs on wooden floors were very slippy. Lighting was sparing. Could be so much better!

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for taking the time to post feedback. I'm incredibly sorry you found some items improperly washed in the kitchen, I think the guests who stayed before you may have stacked the dishwasher too tightly and put everything away thinking it was clean. We should have checked it more thoroughly, thank you very much for pointing it out. We are upgrading our dinnerware this week and have put more effective underlay for the rugs, thank you very much for the feedback. Regarding the lighting, I'm sorry it was insufficient for you. We do stay at the house on a regular basis and we are avid readers so we do need decent lighting and make sure that there are plenty of lamps in each room. You're possibly more used to spotlights, which we avoid as they wouldn't suit the house's style. Thank you so much for your very helpful review - I do hope that you enjoyed your stay regardless.

Excellent Location & Charming Cottage

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 6 (grandparents, us, and 2 young kids) stayed here for 5 nights on our vacation. After staying in London for several days, it was an easy drive to the cottage. Constance gave great directions, and our HERE maps app got us all around the country like a breeze. The location is excellent, and within 30-45 minutes from many major sites, plus many more local things. We could have stayed here a week and still not seen everything. The cottage is charming, and is very well represented by the pictures. There was plenty of room for our family of 6, and the kids loved having the toys and games to play with. The kitchen was fully equipped, and the Tesco in Shaftesbury was the perfect place for us to get groceries during our time there (but everything closes early on Sunday!) You can tell this is a home, and the tips and ideas that the owners left for visitors were awesome. We enjoyed walks in the country, visiting Bath, Cheddar Gorge, Old Wardour Castle, Stonehenge and Salisbury during our time there. The gardens are beautiful, and we loved playing soccer and having picnics at the picnic table when the weather was good during our stay. The house is pretty far in the country, but an amazing change when coming from the city, and very well located for many things that we were looking to do on this trip! Would definitely recommend this place to others looking to stay in the country and take day trips. We loved coming back in the afternoons and relaxing, and the wireless internet was invaluable in researching our options for the next day. Thanks so much for a great time, our stay here will be remembered for a long time!

Quiet, comfortable and very spacious.

  • 5 of 5

We booked for a family reunion. There was plenty of space for 6 adults. The property is old but everything worked and it had a very relaxing feel. We did a lovely long walk starting at the front door. The local village has a good pub.

Best Christmas Ever!

  • 5 of 5

Dibbens Cottage made our family Christmas the best ever. It was cosy, welcoming, filled with games and interesting books, that kept everyone busy. We had everything we needed. The local village is beautiful with a fantastic pub and a vibrant church. We enjoyed a couple of lovely walks and spent evenings in front of the cosy fire. We would love to go again!

The area around the neighbouring village of Tisbury (8 minutes away) has been voted number 2 of the 30 best places to live in the countryside in England by the Times of March 2014.

We love the beauty and restfulness of the landscape, the pretty villages with good pubs, how friendly everybody is, and cooking with the excellent local produce. There is also a lot to visit as the beautiful towns of Shafestbury, Bath, Salisbury and Sherbourne, are within easy drive.

You must try Pythouse Kitchen Garden and Café just up the road. You can pick your own fruit / veg / flowers, have a delicious breakfast or afternoon tea, in the idyllic setting of a vast working kitchen garden.
