About the property

A stone's throw from Sarlat, air conditioned - ideal family holiday destination.

La Maison du Theil is arranged in 2 parts, the main house and the summer house. Altogether sleeping 10 with room for a cot, if needed.

The house offers luxurious facilities such as air conditioning in each bedroom (very much appreciated for those hot summer nights), Satellite TV, WIFI and a DVD player. The house still retains its original character with 2 stone built fireplaces, wooden beams and a beautiful stone arch. Bed linen and towels are included and the beds are made at your arrival!

The ground floor of the main house comprises:

- a through lounge with comfortable sofas, a wood burning stove, coffee table, TV and lamps. It opens onto a play room - ideal for children with games and toys.

- a separate dining room with magnificent stone fireplace, solid wooden dining table seating 8, and sideboard.

The first floor of the main house comprises:

- a first double bedroom, with wooden panelled walls, bedside tables, lamps, and wardrobes

- a second double bedroom, with bedside tables, lamps and plenty of storage space

- the dining area offers a large glass table, comfortably seating 10, and the french windows slide open completely offering an inside/outside summer space, complete with large electric blind for shade. This room is air conditioned - ideal for cool family meals in the heat of the summer!

The first floor of the summer house:

- the master bedroom suite with double bed, bedside tables and huge wardrobes.

- The magnificent swimming pool, measuring 14m x 7m, is heated from June to September, and has a maximum depth of 1m50. It is equipped with deck chairs and parasols. The swimming pool is totally private and not overlooked in any way.

- A large terrace complete with outdoor dining table and chairs and BBQ.

- A huge, totally fenced garden, comprising lawned areas, established shrubs and woodland - a paradise for children.

- 4 parking spaces

- Electric gates close completely the property for your security.

Lots and lots of room

We went in the second week of September, but met unseasonably cool weather, so we spent almost no time lounging by the pool. That said, we had a great time. The pool heating was good, so some swims were had, and it is a very big pool. The shallow end slopes quite abruptly after about 2 metres, but that wasn't a problem. Big pluses: the grounds are very large, with lots of woodland which our 2-year-old grandchild enjoyed, and plenty of open space; the large living area in the house by the pool has lots of space too (perfect for a toddler); and there is lots of indoor space generally, including in the sitting room in the main house; very well equipped for outdoor living; lots of cutlery and plenty of glasses; a huge, efficient and modern fridge/freezer in the pool house kitchen; and the grounds are safely enclosed with a wire fence and gates to the road. We didn't try the air conditioning (not warm enough!).

On the slightly negative side, the cooking arrangements are odd. There is an oven and hob in rather dark kitchen in the main house, but not too much in the way of cooking equipment: it could do with a proper large frying pan (the house sleeps 10, but you can't fry potatoes for 10); the kitchen in the pool house has rings and a microwave, but no oven; there are breadboards, but not much in the way of chopping boards. The bedroom in the poolhouse is more of a mezzanine...no door...and the decor overall, though of good quality, is rather dated.

En Toutes Saisons were efficient agents, responding promptly to a problem with a cot (which need replacing). Lovely location. But it could do with a tenants' book where people write about their favourite trips/shops/restaurants.

La Maison du Theil is situated just 6kms from the medieval market town of Sarlat-La-Caneda, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The pricncipal tourist sites of the region are all within a 25km radius: the castles of Beynac, Castelnaud, Les Milandes; the villages of Domme, La Roque Gageac; the caves of Lascaux II, and Padirac..... so many sites to visit, all within a stone's throw of the house!
