Delightful house in the heart of St Vaast-la-Hougue, just steps from the sea.

Bedrooms 5
Property type house
Minimum Stay 7 nights

About the property

4 beds, 2 bathrooms, 3 reception rooms separate toilet

St Vaast is a bustling fishing port and marina with many restaurants, cafés and shops. It is ideal for those who wish to sample French life close at hand in a small community described by one travel writer as 'a gem of the Normandy coast'.

The house is perfectly situated a few metres from the sea and approx 50 metres from the delightful harbour, shops and restaurants.

The property offers bright, spacious accommodation comprising of a large reception hall, a dining/sitting room with wood burning stove and a well equipped kitchen. There is a washing machine in the exterior storage room where there is also an additional large fridge-freezer. We have three ground floor bedrooms :1 double, 1 twin, 1 single and 2 bathrooms,as well as a separate WC.

The living room is a large open mezzanine overlooking the dining area, with a door leading to a single bedroom.

To the rear is a lovely south facing patio with garden furniture.

The house is ideal for guests who use a wheelchair, or indeed anyone with limited mobility, as 3 of the bedrooms along with the bathrooms and kitchen are all on the ground floor.

14 Rue de la Vielle Eglise, St Vaast was originally two fishermens' cottages which were joined together some years ago. Since then the property has been extended and modified into a large, comfortable 4 bedroom, two bathroom house which has many original features.

The age of the house is unknown, but it was probably built towards the end of the 18th century: it is certainly shown on maps of St Vaast which were compiled in Napoleonic times. It is in a conservation area close to the site of the old church which is now the'Sailor's Chapel', and 50 metres from the sea wall constructed by Vauban, Napoleon's architect, some 200 years ago.

St Vaast is a charming small town with easy access from the Channel ports and is an ideal destination for holidays and breaks throughout the year. It is what the French call 'une ville vivante' - a 'living town' - and there is plenty to do during the winter. It is just over half an hour's drive to the Utah and Omaha WW2 landing beaches.

The house, with its wood burning stove and central heating makes a perfect setting for Christmas (tree and decorations supplied if required!)

Please contact me if you are a larger group than 6. Additional guests can sometimes be accommodated for an additional charge. Thank you.

Why Louise Gates chose Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue

My parents originally bought this property over ten years ago. Having spent many months searching, they chose St Vaast because it is such a lovely, relaxing and interesting town. They chose the house because it is is right in the middle of it all!

Situated in a very quiet road, yet only a minute's walk from all the cafes, restaurants and boulangeries that you could ever wish for! To be able to stroll out and buy breakfast, or indeed anything else you might want, without getting into the car is bliss. You can happily spend weeks here and never need to drive.

.As my daughters grew older, they and their friends loved running errands around the town and relished a bit of independence.

The beach is just round the corner; it's rock pooling heaven, but has plenty of sand for sunbathing and castle building too. It is never, ever crowded, in fact its usually empty!

There is so much to see and do: a lighthouse, amazing fortifications built for Louis XIV ( now a UNESCO world heritage site), a working fishing port where the fishermen sell fresh fish, mussels and crabs straight from the boat, an island nature reserve, oyster beds, a fabulous marina, marvelous shops- it goes on.

What makes this house unique

Vieille Eglise really is unique, with tardis-like qualities! It looks small from the outside, but expands into a beautiful, light-filled spacious house. There are living areas on two levels: ground floor and mezzanine, which are marvellous if children and adults want a break from each other!

There are plenty of quaint, original features and a small but perfectly formed outside terrace for eating out in the summer.

We have tried to create a welcoming, comfortable haven- the sort of place where we ourselves want to stay....

At last, a Five star holiday home!!

  • 5 of 5

We have now been back to this delightful property three times, and simply cannot fault it.

Every care has been taken to provide the holiday maker with all home comforts:- it is spotlessly clean, has constant hot water, extremely comfortable beds, and has a very well equipped kitchen.

The separate tv lounge on the mezzanine floor was particularly welcomed by our grandchildren who thought we couldn't hear them!!

In addition, wifi is available for those who cannot live without it, all included in the quoted price.

This holiday gem is ideally placed for all activities in St. Vaast, with a variety of shops and restaurants within a couple of minutes' walk.

We cannot wait to go back.

Lovely, comfortable home in fantastic small town

  • 5 of 5

My husband is Norman, but this part of Normandy was new to us, and we loved it. The house was clean, comfortable and well-equipped, with lots of room to spread ourselves around. We appreciated the books, games and DVDs provided in the evenings, but the weather was so good we were out all day, swimming in the sea at high tide, and exploring rock pools and La Hougue the rest of the time. Our 3 year old liked watching the boats come in and out. And we liked the local butchers, fishmongers and of course Gosselin. A great place for a family break.

Idéalement située au cœur du pittoresque village de Saint Vaast la Hougue, à deux pas du port et des commerces, une maison confortable, bien équipée où l'on se sent chez soi.

Still superb

  • 5 of 5

It's six years since we last reviewed this property, and we have been back every year since. Our kids have grown from little people to teenagers, but the idea of not going back to rue de la Vieille Eglise is appalling to them, and indeed to us.

Every year, there seems to be an improvement: this year, the WiFi was seriously beefed up and there's a second flat-screen television downstairs, next to the fire. The phone is free for worldwide calls, the hot water keeps on flowing, the beds are still a wrench to leave and Saint-Vaast itself remains a charming fishing port.

Storm Imogen was blasting over from the west (it was February), but we had a fine week nonetheless; logs on the fire, books and movies, delicious Norman produce (including oysters, of course: pick them from the rocks for zero euros at low tide).

We were only four people, but there is room for five more if you're a larger group. The house is spotless, tasteful, comfortable and welcoming. No wonder it has only five-star reviews.

Perfect location in St Vaast

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in this wonderful house at the end of August and enjoyed our stay so much we are trying to find a date to return next year.

We know St Vaast well but from a boat point of view so to stay in the town was a novelty but it has lost none of its charm ... Chasse Maree, Gosselin, the market - we could go on but instead we would encourage anyone to sample the delights themselves in this beautiful house which is close enough to walk everywhere yet off the beaten track enough to be a quiet oasis.

The house has all you require for every age in terms of entertainment, the beds are comfortable, the linen is crisp and the kitchen is equipped for your every need and the owner also calls to make sure all is well!

This gorgeous house has been the find of the decade for us. We have stayed here with my parents and children twice before, but this time came as just the two of us.

For an extended family it was ideal. Plenty of ground floor bedrooms for the lesss nimble amongst us, fun attic bedrooms for teenagers, three separate sitting areas so that you dont feel all squashed in, a HUGE dining table, a bath and a shower in separate bathrooms and a lovely courtyard in case it ever stops raining.

Every thing you could need is provided, including English television, DVDs and children's videos, all the kitchen equipment necessary, crisp bedlinen already on the beds, barbecue and laundry equipement, books and even a welcome bottle of wine.

The property is immaculate and well maintained and the owner is LOVELY, very accommodating and friendly.

The house could not be in a better position. Within five minutes you can be on a beach, walking to a lighthouse, in one of several bars and restaurant, to the best little supermarket in the world (M.Gosselin), and even have a day trip on an amphibious bus to the island.

Oysters abound and the seafood is WONDERFUL.

We cannot reccomend this house too highly, and we will definitely be back

The town of St Vaast is full of interest. The sea wall and fort were designated as a World Heritage Site in 2009. Beaches have both sand and rock pools and just offshore is a nature reserve, the Ile de Tatihou, which is reached by amphibian craft. The town is flat and the main shopping street is situated some 50 metres from and parallel to the harbour. Here there are bakers, butchers, speciality shops, pavement cafes and the famed Gosselin emporium a mini Fortnum and Mason. Towns to visit include Cherbourg, Bayeux and Caen. There are trains to Paris from Valognes (20 mins drive away)

The landing beaches and museums are a short drive away. On the other side of the peninsula and there are trips to the Channel Islands and Mont St Michel is about 1.5 hours away by car.

There are numerous events throughout the year details of which are published at the local tourist office.

There are golf courses at Fontenay-Sur-Mer and Cherbourg both approximately 20/25 minutes drive from St Vaast

Other Activities: Fitness trail. internet cafe.
