Newly-built Riverside Lodge sits on the edge of the pretty village of Norham offering guests the best of both worlds. A couple of minute’s walk from the front of the house takes you to the centre of the village and its amenities including two pubs, an excellent butcher, baker and village shop. Step out of the back of the house and the large rear garden sweeps down to the River Tweed and into open countryside via a network of fabulous river walks.
Inside the spacious, well-presented accommodation is incredibly light and bright. An impressive open plan living area includes a contemporary kitchen complete with state-of-the-art electric Aga, a dining area for eight and a seating area with super views and several sets of French doors opening onto the terrace.
French doors in the master bedroom (with en suite shower room) make the most of the light and the views. Bedroom two has an en suite shower room and the further double and twin bedrooms share a family bathroom. There’s a useful utility room and a secure garage for storing outdoor kit. Dogs are permitted in the garden but must be kept to the garage or dog run and are not allowed in the house.
Outside, there’s a terrace with gas barbecue and furniture for outside dining beyond which the large rear garden runs down to the river. A stretch of Astroturf at the top of the bank is ideal for some pitch and putt practice or as an all-weather play area for children. The terrace and garden have super views to open countryside.
With direct access to one of the world's greatest salmon rivers on the doorstep, Riverside Lodge is a perfect base for fishing parties. The house sits above the Pedwell and Horncliffe beats on the English side and Ladykirk on the Scottish side, and is within easy driving distance of a number of bottom and lower Tweed beats. Norham Angling Association permits can be purchased in the village for some evening trout fishing.
The pretty village of Norham, a finalist for England's Favourite Village Award and famous for its imposing Norman castle ruins depicted in Turner’s iconic paintings, has a local shop, bakery, two pubs, a gunsmith and the celebrated Foreman's Butcher selling a fantastic selection of meats, pies, local cheeses, wines and even fishing flies. The fish and chip van on a Thursday night is also not to be missed!
More extensive shopping is available in Berwick-upon-Tweed (8 miles) or just over the border in Coldstream (8 miles). Norham is also close to two of the area’s best eateries; The Collingwood Arms at Cornhill-on-Tweed and the Allanton Inn which specialise in dishes prepared using the wealth of local produce on offer.
Norham is an ideal base for discovering Northumberland's stunning and varied countryside. Explore the Heritage coastline, 25 miles of golden sands and secluded rocky coves. One of our favourites is Bamburgh Beach, with miles of pristine sand nestled behind huge sand dunes. At low tide take a trip across the causeway to the mystical Holy Island of Lindisfarne, enjoy amazing views from the cliff top walks at St Abb’s Head or take a boat to the Farne Islands to see the resident colonies of Grey Seals and an impressive array of birdlife including Puffins.
A stone’s throw in the other direction will take you to charming market town of Wooler, gateway to the Cheviot Hills, the rolling blanket of people-free hillsides that slope and swell amidst the 400 square miles of Northumberland’s National Park. Here you will find some fabulous walking and cycling from gentle forays to serious hikes amidst spectacular scenery.
The region’s rich and often bloody history is reflected in the magnificent chain of castles that punctuate the landscape. In addition to Norham Castle, besieged at least 13 times by the Scots, those nearby include dramatic Bamburgh, perched high on its rocky outcrop, the vast, romantic ruins of Dunstanburgh, the palatial splendour of Floors, Chillingham, reputedly one of the most haunted buildings in England and home to the world’s only herd of wild cattle and foreboding Alnwick, made famous as the location for Hogwart’s School in the Harry Potter films.
The beautiful coastline provides the perfect opportunity to try your hand at kite surfing, sailing or coasteering. The nearby stables at Kimmerston offer tuition and farm hacks as well as beach rides and treks in the Cheviot Hills. There is excellent cycling on quiet country lanes around the village and on dedicated cycle routes including the Tweed Cycle Way and the Coast and Castles cycle route. The area is also a golfer’s paradise with several well-regarded courses nearby including the Championship Qualifying links course at Goswick and the Roxburghe Championship Course outside Kelso. For something a little different, clay pigeon shooting and archery are available locally and beginners are very welcome.
Paxton House is just down the road which has a lively events programme as well as housingan important collection of late 18th and early 19th century paintings loaned by the National Galleries of Scotland. From here head over the impressive Union Chain Bridge at Horncliffe, the first suspension bridge of its kind in the UK and up to the Chainbridge Honey Farm for a wander around the vintage museum and sample some fabulous honey. Also nearby is the Ford and Etal estate where attractions include Northumberland’s only thatched pub, and the delightful Heatherslaw miniature steam railway.
The magnificent city of Edinburgh is an easy day trip either about an hour by car or 45 minutes on the train from Berwick-upon-Tweed.
The accommodation is all on one floor and is suitable for mobility impaired guests. Bedroom two has a wet room and there is a wheelchair-friendly ramp up to the side door of the property.

Riverside Lodge has a large, fully-enclosed garden. There is also a terrace with outside dining for 8 guests and a large gas barbecue. There is ample parking for at least three cars.

A large garage is available for guest’s use as a rod and boot room.
Mobile coverage and wi fi
Please note there is very limited mobile coverage at this property on most networks other than O2. Coverage improves dramatically if one walks up the hill at the end of the village. A pre-pay O2 mobile telephone is available for guests to use. This will be left with about £10 of credit and guests can top this up as required.
Wi fi is available at Riverside Lodge.
The beds are made up with hypoallergenic duvets and pillows. A hair dryer is supplied in the master bedroom. Luxurious bath sheets and hand towels are provided for all guests. Guest soap is also provided.
Babies and children

There is underfloor electric heating in addition to central heating provided by a combination of solar and oil.
Catering at Riverside Lodge is entirely flexible. The house can be taken on a purely self-catered basis, or a cook is available throughout guest’s stay, for breakfasts or dinners only or to provide one-off celebratory meals for a special occasion. A homemade meal delivery is available which is popular for guest’s first night and wine delivery is available in conjunction with renowned wine merchants Corney & Barrow.
Dogs are welcome in the garden but are not allowed in the house and must be kept to the dog run or the garage.
