The perfect couples' retreat, the cottage offers well-presented, spacious accommodation in a super location at the end of a private road on the Swinton Hill Estate.
Here you can unwind and listen to the gentle sounds of nature taking in fresh country air or head out and explore the stunning Northumberland coast or the rolling Border heartlands. Alternatively for those who prefer their leisure time on two wheels, two complimentary bikes are available for guest use on request.
Inside, the sunny open-plan living space is the convivial heart of the house. On warm days, French doors let the fresh Borders air in, or simply relax mind, body and soul in front of the dancing flames of the wood burning stove for those lazy days or cosy evenings when the seasons change and the days grow shorter.
The smart kitchen is well equipped with plenty of thoughtful extras which make this a real home-from-home. The bedroom is warm and comfortable with crisp linens and pretty cottage detailing to ease you into a lovely sleep after a day in the great outdoors.
Outside the seating area is a super spot for an evening drink watching the sun set over the distant hills with little to interrupt the moment and an overall sense of peace-perfect-peace.
Local amenities are provided in Norham (4 miles) which has a village store, bakery and gunsmith as well as the celebrated Foreman’s Butchers where you will find a fantastic selection of quality produce including locally-sourced meats, pies, cheeses, fine wines and even fishing tackle! There are two pubs in Norham, including the dog-friendly and cycle-friendly Mason’s Arms serving real ales and pub grub.
The charming towns of Duns, Kelso are both within a 20 minute drive and provide excellent amenities in addition to a good selection of pubs, restaurants and shopping. Alternatively the historic town of Berwick-upon-Tweed is 12 miles and includes a Marks & Spencers food outlet, and a good selection of cafes, pubs and restaurants, including the very popular Maltings Kitchen with adjoining arts and theatre venue. Head to the quayside and you can purchase lobster, scallops or wild Scottish salmon fresh from the day’s catches from the Berwick Shellfish Company or order direct to have a perfect seafood platter delivered to your holiday home.
For eating out, the Wheatsheaf at Swinton (1 mile) or the Inn at Allanton (6 miles) are both renowned for serving dishes full of fresh local flavours amidst relaxed, convivial surroundings. Alternatively for a perfect pint and lovely ambient surroundings, the newly refurbished Cross Inn at Paxton (8 miles) is developing a super reputation for its excellent local menu and friendly atmosphere, or why not try the Collingwood Arms at Cornhill (10 miles) which is an elegant setting for lingering lunches or fine evening dining.
Activities and attractions
For sightseeing, the property is an ideal base for exploring the wider area with its magnificent countryside steeped in a turbulent and romantic history, punctuated by imposing castles, including Floors, Bamburgh, Dunstanburgh, and Thirlestane; the evocative ruins of abbeys at Kelso, Melrose and Dryburgh; and the grand stately homes and gardens of nearby Paxton, Manderston and Mellerstain.
The stunning heritage coastline is just a short twenty minute drive with miles of pristine sandy beaches, jolly pubs serving the freshest fish and chips, and picture postcard coastal villages with charming galleries and gift shops.
Birdwatchers, walkers and photographers will delight in the stunning cliffs and coves of the Berwickshire coastline where you will spot thousands of seabirds and seals around the St. Abbs Nature Reserve or cross the causeway at low tide to the very beautiful Holy Island of Lindisfarne where you will experience nature at its very best.
There are some wonderful walks around the area, and more serious walkers and cyclists can link into a number of long distance routes including the Berwickshire Coastal Path, or St.Cuthberts Way which take in the spectacular scenery and rich wildlife of the area but which all have easier stretches and shorter routes for those seeking a more leisurely pace.
Walk for miles on the stunning sandy beaches around Bamburgh or simply enjoy the simple pleasures of a picnic watching kite surfers soar across the bay on sands which remain almost deserted even in the summer months.
There is excellent walking and cycling from the cottage and a riding stables nearby. With easy access to the River Tweed, The Bothy is an ideal base for fishing parties and rod racks are provided. Golfers are also well provided for with 16 courses within a 30 mile radius, ranging from challenging PGA Championship courses, to picturesque links and parkland courses to suit all standards.
The accommodation at The Bothy is all on one level and comprises:
Well-equipped kitchen with oven and four ring hob, microwave, fridge with ice compartment, washing machine and small television. Please note there is no dishwasher. Glazed doors lead to the open-plan living area.
Spacious sitting / dining room with French doors to the garden. Cosy seating area with log burner for the cooler months (logs are provided), two double sofas, TV with Freeview and DVD player, iDock, books and games. Dining table for 6 guests.
Bedroom with 5' bed, wardrobe and chest of drawers.

Excellent quality bed linen and luxurious White Company towels are provided for all guests.

Garden and grounds
To the front of the property is a small seating area (part lawn and part terrace) with lovely views across open farmland to the hills beyond. Rod racks are provided. A charcoal kettle barbecue is available for guest use.
There is private parking for two cars to the side of the cottage but under cover parking is available if desired.
The cottage is detached and is not overlooked.
Two bicycles are available for guest use on request.
Catering and housekeeping
Homemade meal delivery, local produce delivery and cooks are available. Asda, Tesco and Sainsburys will also deliver. Daily housekeeping is available. Please contact us for further details.
Two dogs are welcome at The Bothy. Dogs are not allowed in the bedrooms or on the furniture.
