Old Mill Cottage is set in a peaceful location five miles from Kelso in idyllic rural surroundings including its own mill pond. The cottage sits in a large, private garden, with a terrace, outside seating area and fabulous, uninterrupted views across the mill pond to open countryside beyond. The mill pond and river are home to a variety of wildlife including otters, deer, badgers, kingfishers, dippers and herons.
The well-presented, cosy interior has been fully renovated to a high standard throughout and comprises a large, open plan ground floor with a kitchen and dining area, a seating area with a log burner and French doors to the terrace. The first floor accommodation comprises a double and twin bedroom and a bathroom. An additional single bed for a child is available on request.
There are fabulous walks from the house including along the pretty Kale Water which runs close by. For more serious walking, the famous St Cuthbert's Way and Pennine Way routes run nearby and there are wonderful walks to suit all abilities in the nearby Bowmont Forest and Harestanes Country Park. The area is also a cyclist's paradise with miles of quiet country roads and marked routes to explore including the Border Loop and 4 Abbeys Cycle Route.
The Kale Water which runs close to the cottage also provides an opportunity for guests to try their hand at fishing. In addition to the late autumn run of salmon, there are excellent opportunities for trout fishing throughout the season. The owner is a keen fisherman and is happy to escort guests and provide instruction and tackle for a small fee. There is more ‘serious' fishing available on the Teviot and the renowned middle Tweed beats all of which are within a ten minute drive of the cottage.
Old Mill Cottage is five miles from Kelso, described by Sir Walter Scott as 'the most beautiful, if not the most romantic village in Scotland.' Home to the championship Roxburghe golf course and regular National Hunt race meets, today it retains much of its original charm with an interesting range of independent shops and a monthly farmer's market.
Seven miles south of the cottage is the bustling market town of Jedburgh, which boasts the evocative remains of a 12th Century Augustinian Abbey, an imposing castle jail unique to Scotland and the 16th Century home of Mary Queen of Scots which reveals the fascinating but tragic story of her life.
There are numerous other places to visit nearby, our favourites include the Teviot Smokery and Water Gardens just down the road, a drive out to the Border Inn at the pretty village of Kirk Yetholm at the foot of the Cheviot Hills and a visit to Floors Castle, the majestic home of the Duke and Duchess of Roxburghe. Eckford is also just an hour's drive from Edinburgh and provides a good base for Edinburgh events.

This cottage is delightful. Perfect location, well kept and everything you could wish for. Owners have thought of everything. Photographs don't do it justice. We are cyclists and this area offers a great choice of rides- good roads and thoughtful drivers. Loved our stay and will definitely book again.
