Masaya Volcano National Park, Arts and Crafts Mkt: In Masaya Volcano National Park, located few minutes from Masaya, looking down to the still active crater will take your breath away. It is one of Nicaragua’s most interesting and beautiful natural phenomena. There is a museum dedicated to the volcano's history. During the pre-Columbian age, Masaya Volcano was an object of veneration by the indigenous people. They believed the eruptions were signs of anger from the Gods and to appease them they offered sacrifices, which often included small children and maidens. During the Conquest, the Spaniards baptized the active Volcano “La Boca Del Infierno” or “The Mouth Of Hell”. Then they planted a cross, “La Cruz De Bobailla”. It was placed on the crater lip in the 16th century in order to exorcise the Devil.

Masaya is famous for its coffee plantations and local handicraft markets. You can buy unique local souvenirs: articles in wood, hammocks, leather (shoes, bags), pottery, ceramics, painting, hard stones, coffee and fabrics.

Mombacho Natural Reserve, Granada: Mombacho is an extinct volcano. From there you will visit the Mombacho Natural Reserve and its tropical cloud forest, a paradise for nature lovers. Take a walk through the trail around one of the craters in the most surprising biological diversity through the trail around one of the craters. Granada is the oldest colonial city in Central America. It was founded by the Spanish conqueror in 1524. A tour in a horse drawn carriage is a must for visitors to Granada; it will take you back in time for more than 500 years. it is the 'in' city in America, with an European flavour and the relaxation of the tropic, where real restate is becoming one of the biggest investments. The houses there are built to the same plan as Granada in Spain, with a central plaza surrounded by colonial buildings with long, open porches. The city surrounds you with unique colonial architecture, horse-drawn carriages and friendly people sitting in rocking chairs. Granada feels like a trip back in time.

Islands (Las Isletas), General Information: These delightful islands, Las Isletas, are an archipelago of 365 little volcanic islands (one for every day of the year) located in Lake Nicaragua. The pier is just 3 km or 10 minutes by car from Granada. Lake Nicaragua is a fresh water lake, 100 miles long and 50 miles wide. The owner of this villa owns one of those islands. A trip to go up to the island can be arranged. The islands were formed in 1800's when the Mombacho volcano blew out its northern side. Despite consisting of mostly volcanic rock, the islands also have vegetation. All these islands are rich in fauna and flora, especially in water birds. Several international airlines such as American Airlines, Continental, Delta, Copa, Grupo Taca, Iberia and Sol Air operate into Managua International Airport from the U.S.A. Do not forget to bring a camera, sun protector lotion, bathing suits and caps. Electricity is the same as in the U.S.: 110 Volts and 60 Hz. You can use a valid U.S. driving license in Nicaragua.

Tout est histoire de vue!

  • 3 of 5

Ma critique se voudra un peu ambiguë...

La maison est très difficile à trouver sans carte ni GPS (;

Owner's Response: Houses in Nicaragua have no address. Local people give directions in reference of landmarks. Tourists do not know the landmarks. So I give them Garmin GPS coordinates as well as Google Map coordinates. Most renters have Google Map on their phones and they have no problem locating my house. I will buy some new chairs for the house. Thanks for the review.

The view is wonderful but to many issues with the rest you need a .car for sure because even if it is in the Apoyo preserve area there is not many things to do, plus no Wi-Fi which today is a most for the travellers, for the food you need to go to masaya saying that you have everything at a mile is not what we expect , during our stay it was windy and we could hear the windows shaking and the roof , for the monkeys we seen a lot near by , a and the house need some repairs, for the service Jensys was great and very helpfull, I will recommend no more than a week and to rent a car , and the picture of the pool give you the Impression is big but in fact it is just a big bath so be sure to not expect to much , but again for a week or people who just want to relaxed and enjoy the view it is ok

Owner's Response: Travelers and residences use data cards for wifi and phone calls that are readily available in shops and stalls nearby. Bus and Cheap Taxi service are also available . This group of renters travel around by bicycles. So getting around is of course limited. The house has a parking space in front of the house. It would be nice if the renters can rent a car during the stay.

Great long weekend in Nicaragua

  • 5 of 5

The owner and property manager were wonderful when working with our difficult flight schedule (arriving at 3:00am and departing at 10:00pm). The house is in a great location; quiet, spectacular views, close to transportation. The home is also well maintained, clean, with nice amenities. We comfortably fit our family of five. The manager checked in on us frequently to offer helpful advice and assistance. My only suggestions for improvement: the DVD player wasn't working well (although the manager did try to help us resolve this), and the tv's in the upstairs bedrooms had little to no reception. Wonderful experience, we would definitely stay again!

As Good As It Gets

  • 5 of 5

My name is Joe and I have rented here for the past two years, once alone, and then with my wife. Each visit has been an incredibly positive experience and I have nothing but the best to say about the property, its owner and the surrounding area. The villa is as advertised and the setting is breathtaking. A description of the view simply would not do it justice. The house is modern, with all amenities and it is very well taken care of by a local family who will do whatever they can to make your stay a pleasant one. The location is outstanding in that it is private, in a quiet neighborhood of friendly, respectful, and trustworthy families. Ideally located, it lies between Masaya and Granada and only about 1/2 hour from Managua.

In the past 2 years I have had a number of encounters with the owner and with her local employees. The owner is open and honest, courteous, and prompt on her responses to and questions or issues. The caretakers are individuals we are proud to call friends. It has been a blessing for me. I could not ask for a better situation and that is why we intend to stay at Casa de Apoyo (the above house), again and again. A vacation spent here is a wonderful experience you will never forget.

View is nice, house is NOT!

  • 3 of 5

First, the view is stunning. The house itself has problems. The electricity went out several times and there is NO back-up generator (working) Also internet access AT the house is NON-EXISTENT. There is an internet cafe about 1/4 mile away, however it did not work due to "technical failure" while we were there. Also it is at LEAST an hour away from Managua unless you drive like a maniac! It was hard to find being out in the country with NO signs! There are monkeys that come into the trees near the house and they can be noisy at night along with the wind! Very windy but warm! An interesting place to stay.

Owner's Response: The group left the air-conditioners and fans on at full capacity when they were not in the house. When the electricity was cut off, the back-up generator did not function well. The back-up generator is functioning normal during the last testing. Internet cable is not paved up to the mountain rim yet. I was told that it will be available next year. There are 4 internet cafes near to the house. The renter must have driven the long route from the airport to the house via downtown Managua. There is a short cut from the airport via Tipitapa. That route only takes 45 minutes at 40 miles per hour drive. In Latin American countries, road signs are not clear to foreigners because the way they tell directions is in reference of Landmarks. Mapquest does not work there. That is part of the adventure trip. However there are only a handful of main highways and the entrance to moutain is along the Masaya Highway. The house is very close to nature. You can find colorful butterflies and beautiful birds in the area.

Nicaragua, the land of sun, lakes and volcanoes, is the largest but most sparsely populated nation in Central America. With an area of approximately 130,000 square kilometers, it is slightly larger than New York State. However, it has a relatively small population of only about 4.5 million. Nicaragua is bordered by the Caribbean Sea on the east, the Pacific Ocean on the west, Costa Rica on the south and Honduras on the north. Nicaragua is mountainous in the west, with fertile valleys. Two big lakes, Nicaragua and Managua, are connected by the Tipitapa River. The Pacific coast is volcanic and very fertile. Caribbean coast is swampy. It is the ideal destination for traveling for those that seek something truly different. Laguna de Apoyo is a hidden paradise just for you!!! Whether you feel like swimming the warm waters of this crater lake, hiking in the forest, or just relaxing, you will love it! Canopy tour and kayaking are the activities for those of you who are adventurous.

Other Activities: Swimming in the volcano crater lake
