About this property

Modern Oceanfront Cabin on Historic Bird Point

This delightful home was built in 2013 by owners/ architects on land that has been in their family for over 100 years. Inspired by the beauty and simplicity of Scandanavian design and the natural beauty of the Maine coast, the owners have created four separate structures that are a mix of old and new.

The main house (860 square feet) serves as the hub and center for gatherings and activities. It has the master bedroom, full bath, small office space and an open living/dining/ kitchen area. Off the kitchen is a pantry/laundry room as well as a mud room.

The full season Main house was designed to fully engage with the outside. A large deck provides for three different sitting areas all with wonderful views to the St. George River, magnificent sunrises and sunsets . The main sitting area is covered with a pentawing and seats 8 comfortably.

The “Annex” is connected to the main house by a large deck. As you enter the Annex, there is a full bath on your left and a queen bedroom to your right. At the end of the hallway there is a bunk room that can sleep 6 (2 single upper beds with 2 doubles below). Both the bunk room and queen room lead out on to a shared deck, with views to the water.

A flight of stairs down from the main house sitting deck leads to the “Bathhouse”. Originally, this small building was located at Olson House where Christina (of “Christina’s World”) lived with her brother, Alvaro. Alvaro brought the small building down to Bird Point where it was put at the head of Kissing Cove as a bath house in the early 19oo’s. Since then, the building has been moved three more times to its final location where it is today.

This Fall, the bath house was converted to a private office space for the owners.

A grassy path leads down close to the water where one will find “Marianna’s Cabin”. This sweet seasonal cabin sleeps two. There is a very small sitting area and kitchen counter where simple meals can be prepared. The cabin has a compost toilet (Separette) and a small deck where we hope to install an outside shower in the future.

Fifteen feet away from Marianna’s cabin and down a small slope is a private crushed shell sandy beach, a rarity on the coast of Maine! The beach is boredered by wonderful flat granite rocks where the often six foot tides come and go bringing sea treasures every day. The beach is totally private and a fantastic place to swim, play, relax, kayak and just hang out.

A wooded path along the water’s edge leads to “Kissing Cove”. It was once believed that long ago a pirate sought quiet shelter in the cove and that he might have buried his treasure along the banks.

Because of the shape and location of the cove, a lot of flotsam gets caught here and builds up over the seasons. At very low tide you can walk along the water’s edge from Marianna’s Beach to Kissing Cove to scout out the treasures that have been brought in with the tide. But, wear sturdy safe shoes!

Beautiful Maine
Fabulous property in stunning setting. We were 8 adults so it was marvellous to have the option of so much space to spread out and then the gorgeous main house to eat and sit together. Just about anything you need is already there. The scenery and tranquility was amazing for us city dwellers. Highly recommended and would love to return. The owners were responsive and very helpful.

Stunning inside and out
Everything about the house and property were wonderful — even bigger and better than the photos. The location is magical and breathtaking. The house and its many features are stylish and comfortable. Communication with the hosts was very easy and friendly. We simply loved our two weeks and hope to return!

Gorgeous, Inside and Out
The property itself is absolutely beautiful...so Maine. The water, the landscaping, a little garden, grassy area for yard games, and all just a short walk up the road to the historic and beautiful Olsen House property (where Andrew Wyeth spent summers and is buried). It felt like our own little paradise. We even got fresh lobster off the boat at Bird Point. The main house and cabins were also fabulous. So clean and organized with high quality furnishings and decor. Not a typical rental property! We took care to respect it all so others could enjoy it after us. The only drawback was that the Bath House roof was moist and it was therefore musty inside. With a fan and some sunny days, it got slightly better through the week, and one heavy sleeper teen from our group tolerated it, but It could be a hang up for others. All in all, absolutely amazing!

Peaceful Maine Perfection
We were 4 adults and 3 small children sharing Joan and Bill’s gorgeous property for a week in August. We were very comfortable using only the main house and the annex and honestly, felt greedy not sharing this fantastic home with others! So much care was taken in every detail it shows how much Joan and Bill really love this home Every morning we woke to the sound of lobster boats going by on the St. George river and spent our evenings on the beach toasting marshmallows at the bonfire on the beach. We walked to the Olson house and enjoyed its beautiful grounds. The kids spent hours running around in the yard, collecting shells on the shore and building fairy houses. It’s a very quiet secluded area (which we LOVED) with Midcoast Maine’s busier charming towns within a 30-40 minute drive. There’s also an excellent playground 10 minutes away that our 5 year olds had a blast playing at. We normally avoid screen time on vacation but the projector and big screen were a special treat for the kids AND grownups! They have tons of dvds to choose from. We had minimal issues but if anything came up Joan was just a text or call away and quick to respond. We are really hoping we have the opportunity to go back again and again. Thank you Joan and Bill!

My husband is an architect and I am a landscape architect. We built this house in 2013 slowly adding to it over a period of three years. We now have five different structures; a main house, annex, two historic small cabins and a workshop.

We have loved the opportunity to develop this historic and meaningful site that honors the honest rugged beauty of the Maine coast, family heritage and beautiful, simple clean design.
