About Jean-Paul Krebs
Les Remparts de Riquewihr (Ramparts of Riquewihr) is a small family business founded and run by a couple of tourism professionals - Martine and Jean-Paul - having many years of experience in airline business and travels.
Jean-Paul Krebs purchased this House in 2006
Why Jean-Paul Krebs chose Riquewihr
In January 2016 our village Riquewihr was awarded MOST BEAUTIFUL VILLAGE in FRANCE by a Japanese association of travel agents and tour operators. The Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2010 has picked Alsace as one of the hot regions in the world to visit. Alsace is one of the most beautiful and distinctive regions of France and is famous for its wine, gastronomy and wine tourism facilities. Alsace has been singled out as one of the hot regions in the world to visit by the Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2010. The annual Best in Travel guide aims to give “a collection of the world’s best journeys, destinations and experiences for the year ahead” to “take travellers out of the ordinary”. One of the highlights of the guide is the Top 10 regions which brings Alsace to the forefront. Joseph Ward, an American wine specialist writing in the Washington Post said: "Alsace is a region apart. German in appearance and character but French in spirit and fact, it has captured the best of both".
What makes this House unique
We think that - especially for a rather long stay (most of our guests are discovering the slow travel concept and are staying 7 nights and more) - it is not enough to sleep well during the night but it is necessary to enjoy the stay in a place which is somehow of the same level as the historical surroundings, the landscape, the mountain and the vineyards: beautiful. We put a lot of effort and care in the renovation and decoration of our vacation rental apartments because we want our holiday homes to be a memorable part of your travel experience to Alsace and France.
Cancelled bookings will not receive a refund.
The apartment is in a great location and very convenient to all the little villages, wineries, etc.
The apartment has been nicely updated. Our only consideration is the limited privacy of the upstairs bedroom. Opens to the living room with only curtains over the doorway. Depending on who is sharing the unit (family or two couples) this maybe an issue. It is well furnished. The kitchen is rather small if you intend to do a lot of cooking and eating in. But with all the wonderful restaurants in the area that may not be a concern.
Our Riquewihr Idyll
We had a wonderful holiday in Riquewihr in June this year. The Sentinel was our home for four weeks. The apartment was everything we expected from our study of the excellent website and could have asked for nothing more. It is ideal for two people. A pleasant ambience was created with simple but comfortable furniture in keeping with the character and age of the building. Modern appliances kept us in the 21st century and the standard of cleanliness was excellent.
Riquewihr is an artist's paradise. My husband had a wonderful time with his sketchbooks and pastel pencils. To enter the town was like walking onto the set of the opera 'The Meistersingers of Nuremberg.'
The length of our stay gave us ample time to savour the delights of Riquewihr and build up a rapport with the local shopkeepers. It also enabled us to explore other villages long the wine route as well as the attractive 'easy to drive in' Vosges Mountains without having to travel excessive distances.
The assistance given to us on our arrival by the owner and the housekeeper throughout our stay was greatly appreciated. Nothing was too much trouble.
We enjoyed the restaurants, Le Sarment D'Or, Le Tire Bouchon and
Le Brendel Stub and supported L'Epicerie and Boulangerie.
We would certainly come again, health and age permitting.
Dear Roma and Ian, we are very happy to learn that you enjoyed your stay with us. Spending 4 weeks in Riquewihr is a typical Slow Travel philosophy and gave you the opportunity to discover the area more in depth. Thank you for taking the time. I can tell you that the people of Riquewihr do remember you.
This charming apartment is the ideal base from which to enjoy the medieval town of Riquewihr as well as explore the nearby towns and villages via the local "wine route." We travelled by local bus or on foot -- a car is not necessary. Riquewihr itself is very popular with tourists but mostly these are day-trippers, leaving the evenings for those of us lucky enough to be staying there. The description of the property and the photos were very accurate, though nothing could prepare a visitor for the charming views or the care and attention with which the apartment has been decorated. Customer service was excellent -- we were contacted by telephone within a few hours, even though our initial inquiry was made over the Christmas holiday period. We would absolutely recommend this apartment and have already done so. Nearby attractions include the town of Hunawihr, with its butterfly garden and nature preserve and, of course, there are lots of vineyards and caves for wine-tasting. Recommended restaurants in Riquewihr include the Dolder and Le Sarment d'or. All in all, a real gem and highly recommended.
Dear Lynn, thank you for taking the time to write a review. We are very happy to learn that you had a wonderful stay, even without a car. Actually you are the first who tried the experience during the whole stay. It is easy to arrive at Colmar train station, hire a taxi to get to the apartment with the luggage and use the bus facilities for the rest of the stay. As you saw it, there are plenty of nice and scenic walks through the vineyards, connecting the village of Riquewihr to Kienzheim, Hunawihr and Ribeauvillé. Walk there, come back with the bus or vice versa.
A Wonderful Place to Stay
My friends and I rented Le Columbier for a week-long stay in May 2009. We freely admit that we are very selective about where we stay, but, that said, Le Coumbier was absolutely perfect. Valerie, the housekeeper, met us at the previously agreed-upon time, and showed us around. We found the accommodations to be first-class, all the way: luxurious linens, extremely comfortable beds and pillows, a nicely furnished kitchen. Everything was spotless. It was obvious to all of us that a lot of time and money had been spent in the restoration of this property.
I found this property on the internet while searching last year for a place to use as a "base" for visiting the Route du Vin area of Alsace. In this instance, it more than exceeded our high expectations. Additionally, it is so close to many charming towns and villages, as well as less than an hour from Strasbourg. We enjoyed Riquewihr in the early morning and evenings, and traveled throughout the days.
I would highly recommend this as a perfect place for two couples (or, in our case, a couple and a single person). Each bedroom had its own in-suite bathroom, and with one on the first floor and one on the third, everyone had their own space.
Thank you, Jean-Paul and Valerie, for helping to make our vacation so lovely!
Thank you for your very kind comments.
We think that - especially for a week stay or more it is not enough to "survive" during the night but it is necessary to enjoy a place which is somehow of the same level as the historical surroundings, the landscape, the mountain and the vineyards: beautiful. A place where our guests like to have a rest and enjoy some time, not only a place for sleeping. We cared for the health of our guests, using only organic products. We paid respect to the history of the place and the local traditions. All furniture are genuine antiques. And finally, we added the modern touch and comfort. We are very happy to learn you enjoyed your stay with us. Jean-Paul
Les Remparts de Riquewihr- a fabulous place!
Our group of 4 middle-aged Canadian couples- all well-travelled , and experienced in European house rentals- found this wonderful house on the internet and were extremely happy with our stay here.
The house is exactly as beautiful as the photos would suggest- it is spotless, very comfortable (beds were wonderful) and completely equipped with everything needed for self-catering.
There are shops within a few minutes walk, to buy whatever you need in the way of food and wine.
The restoration has been done in such a way as to preserve the character of this ancient house, but provide comforts and conveniences expected in a 5 star hotel (the bathrooms are spectacular).
The furnishings, artwork, dishes and cooking equipment are all first class; furnishings are comfortable, yet fitting the character of the house well .
The owner greeted us on arrival and took extraordinary care of us- he really did go out of his way to make our stay absolutely unforgettable ( arranged special dinner reservations, wine tasting, and more). We enjoyed meeting him and found his hospitality above and beyond anything we have experienced.
We found Riquewihr quite magical- a medieval town perfectly preserved - surrounded by hills of grape vines. There are many places of interest to visit nearby.
However, the house is so lovely, it is tempting to stay put, reading in the living room while looking out the windows at views of the hills and vines.
We rented all 3 apartments and found this worked very well for our group of 8. We used La Columbier as the base for cooking and socializing. There was enough room for 8 around the table and the living area was also roomy enough for us.
Having individual bathrooms for all was very nice.
We certainly plan to return again -as this house was an unforgettable place and the surrounding countryside offers many places to explore.
It is convenient to Strasbourg as well as other major centers - Basle, Freiburg.
We would recommend this house to anyone who enjoys staying in a quiet, comfortable home, shopping for local food and wine, and feeling at home, while exploring new places.
And if cooking is not for you, there are good restaurants within a 5 minute walk (a list of recommendations is provided)
Altogether a fabulous experience and we will come again!
It is a great help for us to receive feedbacks from our renters.
It is not always possible for us to welcome our guests personally since we are living at the edge of the Champagne vineyards near Paris, some 350 kilometres away from Riquewihr. But Valérie, our housekeeper in Riquewihr is always ready to do her best for a warm welcome and help when necessary. And when, from time to time we manage to be there ourselves, it is always a great pleasure to share some time with our guests.
As one can imagine, bringing back to life such old houses need a lot of efforts, - not only money - but ideas and some strengh and will to overcome all the obstacles. Our aim was always to provide, not only a comfortable accommodation but a place with a spirit. And make the stay in Riquewihr and the Alsace region a real and deeper personal experience, as close as possible from the local traditions and culture.
Learning that our guests do appreciate and enjoy the result keeps us on track for the future. We have another restoration project in Riquewihr, even more crazy: 4 beautiful holiday apartments will be available in a Renaissance house of 1560, built on the 1291 ramparts and facing the Grand Cru Schoenenbourg vineyard. A blog about this project will shortly go live. At the moment, the place is a ruin... We will need 18 month for the restoration as well as... the moral support of all our friends and guests!

Alsace and the medieval city of Riquewihr are in eastern France on the Rhine River border with Germany. It is unquestionably spectacularly beautiful. Alsace offers a very special combination of history, culture, scenery, and especially food and wine makes it one of the most delightful places to visit in all of Europe.
In January 2016, Riquewihr was awarded MOST BEAUTIFUL VILLAGE of FRANCE by an association of 400 Japanese travel agents and tour operators.
