Knowles - The ultimate family home.

VisitEngland 4 stars awarded.

Superb detached Victorian country house, built in 1890, full of character and many original features, set back from the Colyford to Colyton road occupying an elevated position in over an acre of beautiful garden. The small friendly town of Colyton just a 5 minute walk away, steeped in history dating back to Saxon times, between Lyme Regis and Sidmouth with quaint shops, art galleries, antiques, a garden shop, inns serving real ales and eateries line the streets. Tennis courts are almost opposite and golf courses at Seaton, Lyme Regis and Honiton.

Scenic walks along the River Coly and the countryside lanes. The electric tram runs along the Axe Valley passing the Nature Reserve to the coast at Seaton 3 miles away. Colyford, 2-minute drive away, has a PO/Stores and butchers, 2 inns, a restaurant, Nature Reserve and Holyford Woods.

The coastal town of Lyme Regis is an easy 15 minute drive over the Devon border into Dorset, offering a wide variety of activities - fossil hunting, fishing trips and cliff top walks along the Jurassic Coast, including the Undercliff Nature Reserve to Seaton.

A 10 minute drive to the picturesque fishing village of Beer and Branscombe. The seaside town of Sidmouth with spectacular beach is only a 15 minute drive with an excellent selection of shops, cafes, restaurants, indoor swimming pool and cinema.

The small thriving market town of Axminster, famous for the Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall 'River Cottage Canteen', shops and weekly street market is also a 15-minute drive away.

Knowles, a perfect family house

  • 5 of 5

Our family (8 adults, three young children and three dogs) stayed at Knowles for the first two weeks of July. The house is delightful - really large with two sittings rooms, a formal dining room, splendid kitchen and a magnificent garden. The surrounding countryside is beautiful and it is a short drive to the beach at Lyme Regis. Colyton, a five minute walk away, is so pleasant. Heather made our stay really welcoming and was so helpful. Thank you for a really good holiday.

Colyton

The level riverside walks are a delight and the river is home to egrets, mallards and, occasionally, kingfishers. Colyton offers a variety of shops, many family owned and unique to the town – wander through the Antique Centre for a bargain, make tracks to the amazing Hardware Store - a real Aladdin's cave, or pop into Garden shop. Welcoming hostelries provide a choice of cream teas, light snacks or pub lunches. There is a host of ancient buildings in the town, many dating back to the 15th and 16th centuries; here you will find the last Oak Bark Tannery in the country, with its excellent garden shop alongside. Unique to this delightful area is the electric tramway, which connects Colyton to Seaton with a stop at Colyford. This is an experience not to be missed as a tram journey affords a fine opportunity to view wading birds and wildlife.

Colyton, is a small town nestled in the valley where the Rivers Coly and Axe meet, the name ‘Coly’ being derived from ‘Culli’ which is an old English word meaning ‘narrow’. In 1086 AD, Colyton was included in the Domes day Book as part of the West Saxon Royal Demense.

During the Monmouth Rebellion of 1664, Colyton earned an entry in Chancery records as ‘The most rebellious town in Devon.’

Today, Colyton is a small, bustling town with a village atmosphere and many independent shops and buildings with great character and charm. Saint Andrews church is large and impressive, and there is thought to have been a Saxon church on this site before 700 AD, with the Norman structure built on Saxon foundations.

Colyton Grammar School dates from 1546 and once occupied the part-medieval building now known as the Old Church House (situated to the left of the main church gates), and moved to Colyford, a small village within the parish of Colyton in 1927.
