Overview

About the property

Two stunning properties: cottage and town house accessing Birr Castle Gardens

A First the cottage, known as the Bothy. Once the living quarters of the young gardiners. Within the walls of Birr Castle Demesne it is tucked in behind the Formal Gardens in a quiet corner and you can walk from there to the Science Centre and the Great Telescope and, like the Adavnan Lodge, you will have the whole 110 acres to yourselves after the visitors to the gardens have gone. It is small and cosy with an open fire in the living dining room. The front door looks straight onto the garden and a door in the wall goes straight into the famous Formal Gardens with their clipped box hedges and the glass house - some of our guests have taken to eating breakfast there! It has three small bedrooms.

The Adavnan Lodge is just accross the road from the Main Gaites into the Demesne, and has its own small garden. You have the keys so that you can entre Birr castle Demesne at any time, and you will visit its Science Centre, children's playground and tree house. It is especially suitable for children.

There are two large, high-ceilinged bedrooms. Both have large double beds and one also has a single bed. The other has a large child's cot. The main living dining room is a beautiful high-ceilinged airy room with an open fireplace (wood and turf are provided) and a stove at the dining end. Children are very welcome as the house belongs to a family with a small child and her books, some toys, and high-chair are all there to make the little ones feel at home.

For both properties the small friendly town of Birr is just on the doorstep and you will find pubs, restaurants and shops in the Main Street, all within easy walking distance. The house is on the corner of the quiet Oxmantown Mall where the Birr Theatre and Arts centre is located, with the Church of Ireland church at the end.

Birr is an excellent central point for exploring Ireland, as much of the country such as the famous Cliffs of Moher are all within a day's drive. Also, the nearest train station, half an hour away at Tullamore, has almost hourly train service to Dublin. This is a good way to do a day trip there and only takes an hour from Tullamore.

There are good walks in the SlieveBloom hills and the Shannon is very close for boating or surfing. The seaside at Galway is also good for a day out. There is an equestrian centre just outside the town for riding in the Slieve Bloom.

Or just chill out in the town of Birr and the beautiful grounds of the castle.

Why Alison Rosse chose Townparks

Our experience at the delightful "Bothy Cottage" is a memory we will remember and treasure.

  • 4 of 5

On arrival in Birr and at Dooley's Hotel one of my cousins was met by Lady Alison Rosse to obtain the pass code for the gate entry to the grounds and the key to "Bothy Cottage".

We met family at the Hotel and endulged in a couple of drinks. In all the excitment time slipped by and now it was night and we thought we had better head on down to the grounds and drop our bags off which were crammed packed into our Jeep. A few more drinks and this would have been an impossible task.

We had been provided a hand drawn map which added a little mystery to reaching the cottage. On our way not more than 5 minutes from the Hotel we weaved up a rather quiet street and came upon large iron gates being the entry gates to the Castle grounds. We entered the code and the gates opened very slowly and we proceeded down the path trying to follow the map. We drove slowly trying to navigate in the dark an unfamiliar path and realised we had taken the wrong direction and finally wedged ourselves in the bog which we had to now get ourselves out of. As time passed we realised we had been away from our group now for an hour. We had been laughing so much at ourselves trying to figure out what to do next, our only solution was to abandon our vehicle and reconsider the situation in day light. As we were laughing so much we thought to have a last attempt and finally to our amazement freed ourselves, now to get to "Bothy Cottage" which was only meters away which we did not realise at the time for we were on unfamiliar ground. We found the cottage and then returned to the Hotel by walking. We had a great night and returned to the cottage with no further episodes.

The next day we went for a walk in the amazing Castle grounds which are so picturesque. Made up of an abundance of what I believe to be rare plants, an amazing free running river and waterfall and a lake in what seemed to be the heart of the grounds. It was truely another world and rather like a fairytale to have to describe especially walking down beside the river. On approaching the Castle we got to view The Great Telescope which was very exciting considering its history. The Castle was surrounded by a moat and rather an amazing site.

We felt very fortunate to be able to stay at the Castle grounds and I would definately recommend any traveller to these parts of Ireland to endulge in this experience.

Charming cottage in a beautiful location

  • 4 of 5

My husband and I brought our mothers to visit Ireland in January. For us it was a very nice time to be there--no crowds and the countryside is beautiful even in January! Lady Rosse was so pleasant to work with on renting the cottage and very hospitable. We arrived on a cold New Year's Day and Lady Rosse and the science center staff were very helpful with the heat. It was so nice to arrive to a kitchen stocked with bread, butter, milk, coffee and tea--all the necessities. After warming up, the cottage was quite comfortable. It is charming. It had plenty of room for 4 adults and would also be great for a family with children. The castle and castle grounds are amazing. We walked through the gardens in the evenings. There are swans and ducks on the ponds and my husband even saw a hedgehog crossing the road! The location is a great home base for driving around Ireland (as we did) and would also be a peaceful getaway to stay in one place. The town of Birr is very friendly and has everything you need.

Magical Irish Cottage in a Beautiful Setting

  • 5 of 5

The Bothy is right out of a fairy tale. The kitchen is small but very well appointed, the beds are super comfortable, and there's plenty of peat and logs for a cozy fire every night. The grounds of Birr Castle provide hours and hours of beautiful walks among the gardens, waterfalls and stunning views. You could spend your entire Irish holiday in Birr (several great pubs, restaurants and shops within easy walking distance), but day trips to other great sight-seeing places are easy. Magical!

Lovely spot to explore Ireland

  • 4 of 5

The Bothy is really a beautiful cottage situated in the very nice park of the castle demense in Birr. You can feel the age, but you have everything that is really necessary for an enjoyable holiday. We stayed there with three adults and two kids and were all pleased with our stay.

Beds were comfortable, the kitchen small but well organized, the bath perfectly ok. There is hardly a more quiet place to stay within a town I guess. Giving the Bothy a little retouch would renew the wonderful vibes of this charming gem.

When a problem occured, help was always at hand asap. Everything, even our late arriving on a sunday, went smooth.

Birr is located perfectly for exploring not only the midlands, but most of Ireland. Dublin is two hours away, as is Cork. Galway, Kilkenny, and Limerick just one. Tullamore just 30 minutes. It is worth spending some time in Birr, too. Since one is living within the park, a walk in it is always possible and very enjoyable, especially in the evening. Good pubs are right in front of the gate. And when traveling with children the playground on the demense is that one super-plus, that made at least our children (4 & 7) love the whole holiday.

Very central area for touring Ireland. Almost all areas within reach of a day's drive. The propertis are on the edge of Birr, a small town with all the amenities, restaurants, bars, shops and supermarkets. You will be within walking distance of one of the best restaurants in town, Spinners, in Castle Street. The main attraction for many is that the properties have access to the grounds of Birr Castle gardens which has a science Gallery celebrating the Parsons family and the great telescope once the largest in the world. The garden is world famous and you have this beautiful park to yourself in the evenings. Birr Castle itself is the family home of Brendan and Alison, The Earl and Countess of Rosse. The Castle is open to visitors in May and July and August in the mornings. Otherwise it is lived in as a family home, but there are occasional concerts in the Gothic Music Room. The Slieve Bloom mountains are a 15 minute drive away and are ideal for walking and gentle climbs in unspoilt forest and open scenery. Many historical sites are in the area, which is sometimes known as the Monastic Midlands for the many early Christian sites and ruins. Clonmacnoise is especially famous. You can visit Dublin by train from Tullamore, only half an hour to Tullamore and then 1 hour by train.
