Very Comfy Former Winemakers Home In Burgundy, Nr Beaune ( UNESCO worldheritage)

Photos and Description of this 3 bedroom holiday home in Saone-et-Loire - Le Pigeonnier

3 Bedrooms, 2 Bathrooms, Sleeps 6

In the pretty village of Change, situated just 2 minutes from Nolay in the Valley de la Cozanne, and on the ‘Route des Vignobles de Beaune à Cluny’, you will find this very comfortable 3 bedroom former winemaker’s house.

Built at the turn of the 19th Century it was one of the traditional houses of the longstanding winemaker ‘Domaine Georges Guérin’ in Change. The lower level served as a ‘Cave’ holding large barrels of wine, and the first floor was used as the living area with access to the rear garden and its unique ‘pigeonnier’.

100 years later, Gérard Martini, fell in love with the house and gave it a new name, ‘Le Pigeonnier’. He has completely restored the property, conserving much of the original charm & antique furniture but at the same time has created a well equipped home with a delightful bathroom & cleverly designed kitchen, satelite TV, Audio and free Wi-fi. You will enjoy original ‘Art Noveau’ elements such as floral and geometric floor tiles, the rosace, stained glass. Now recently the property has been bought by Karl and christine De Bruyne who will keep the spirit of the house intact who have decided to open up the attic exposing the original beams and typical stone wall.

Outside: You arrive at the walled courtyard and double gates. There is ample parking for 2 cars here in the courtyard. An original well has been turned into a pretty fountain feature.

Wide steps lead to the upper garden and outdoor dining area. A wooden table and 6 chairs under metal framed gazebo with outdoor kitchen and BBQ provide the perfect ambiance for al-fresco dining. A wood store can be found by the back door – wood supplied for those cooler summer evenings.

The garden is fully enclosed and has many flower and shrub borders.

At the rear of the property you will see 'Le Pigeonnier' (giving the name to the property) which has been nicely restored. Next to it there is the swimming pool and the little spa with, sauna, shower and gym with a professional fitness bike. In the court-yard you can play table tennis, petanque

Biking and hiking: The 'Pigeonnier' is ideally located for your biking and hiking activities. There is detailed information in the house where to bike and hike.

Behind the property you find the recently opened 'VOIE VERTE' (Green Way') built on the old railway track: ideal for hiking, biking and even roller skating. When you go to the right you pass the beautiful Maranges vinyards ( UNESCO world heritage), you come down to Santenay with it's nice Castles, you can turn right again and continue along the 'Canal du Centre'.

EXTRA: there are 7 (!) Bikes for your use (free of charge): 4 mountain bikes for adults, 2 MTB's for children of different ages and one little bike with supporting wheels for a real 'youngster'. We provide 2 bike-baby-seats plus enough helmets.

Wine and wine making: Our neighbours 'the Monnots' are vintners (Domaine Monnot-Roche). If you are interested, Christophe can explain a lot about the wines and wine making. Of course you can taste his Hautes-Côtes-de-Beaune, Maranges 1er Cru, Chardonnay, Aligoté...

About Karl De Bruyne

We are Christine and Karl De Bruyne, married for about 25years with 2 daughters Hannah (23) and Emma (21). We live in Belgium in a village near Antwerp.

Karl De Bruyne purchased this house in 2014

Why Karl De Bruyne chose Saone-et-Loire

Burgundy is a region we have been visiting numerous times over the years, usually returning home with a trunk full of delicious wines. In July 2013 we started thinking of buying a house in Burgundy and started our search which lasted about 8 months and took as several drives up and down. We were on the verge of abandoning our search when we fell upon “Le Pigeonnier”. It was love at first sight and by the end of the next week the deal was sealed.

What makes this house unique

wonderfully situated amidst hills, vineyards ( UNESCO "climats") in a very quiet village not far away from towns with restaurants and commerces within cycling distance.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We arrived Wednesday evening after a flight from NYC thru London to Paris and a four hour drive to Change.

Christine and Gerard greeted us in front of your gite and showed us around.

They are very kind.

Have been on a "whirlwind" touring the area. The Cote de Beaune villages are so scenic and way beyond our expectations. We have toured many areas of France, but this is fantastic in its beauty and superb food and wine.

After exhausting ourselves for the first two days we decided to cook in tonight..which gave a chance to really enjoy our home.

We now understand why you fell in love with the Pigeonnier and Change. We have too.

Wish we had arranged to say longer.

Thanks for letting us stay in your lovely country home.

Blissful stay in rural Burgundy

  • 5 of 5

A gorgeous home, full of history and personality! A superbly equipped kitchen with everything one could need. Our adult children loved taking the bikes onto the Voie Verte for a ride. In the afternoons the outdoor eating area was the scene for wine and cheese and card games before dinner. The close proximity to a supermarket and boulangeries in Nolay made shopping very easy. Not to mention the two 'caves' where we could buy good value Burgundy wines.

Wonderful stay in Burgundy

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay in this house full of character, which was immaculately presented and very well equipped, especially if you like cooking. The outside space for sitting and eating were lovely with a beautiful view. The information on what to do in the area and the selection of guides and walking routes were excellent. Having the bikes was great, cycling and walking through local vineyards were both real highlights of the holiday. The local caretaker was very friendly and helpful. There are many good restaurants nearby and the Cave at Mazenay great fun. We would thoroughly recommend the property and the area.

Le Pigeonnier

  • 5 of 5

We stayed 3 weeks in Le Pigonnier and loved it. The house is very practical and the kitchen has everything you need for cooking. The house has three bedrooms and two bathrooms. Be aware that one bedroom is not completely closed, but has a lot of privacy.

The garden is small, but very nice. We ate the whole time outside at a table who has a very nice view of the village and a little vinyard.

The town of Nolay is 2 Miles away and I walked to the city every morning to buy croissants and baguettes.

The house comes with 6 bikes, but we hiked mostly. There are stunning walks to make in the middel of the vineyards.

Communication with the owner was very easy and we had a very good contact with the lady who takes care of the house.

We can recommand this house to all Burgundy lovers.

What a wonderful week!

  • 5 of 5

Incredible visit! The gite is beautiful and very comfortable. Kitchen for those who love to cook, as we do, was amazingly equipped. Christine was very helpful and welcoming. We had some trouble with train tickets (our fault) and she was extremely concerned and enlisted the help of of a neighbor who immediately solved the problem.

If I were to offer any additional feedback at all, it would be to note that she speaks no English. It wasn't a problem for us, since I was able to practice my extremely rudimentary French, but might be useful to mention.

Our daughter and son-in-law who joined us loved the place and suggested a family reunion at the gite every few years. We are planning on taking them up on the suggestion.

Wonderful stay in Burgundy

  • 5 of 5

We so enjoyed staying in this lovely cozy house. The minute we walked in it felt like home and we hated to leave after a week. The wonderful spacious and homey kitchen had everything one could ever need to make the finest of meals--everything was thought of. Sitting outside in the evenings enjoying the peace and quiet of Change was priceless. We loved having cable TV on the one rainy day and also enjoyed the very fast internet. Washing machine and dryer were nice to have and especially loved the new bedrooms upstairs--so much space!!!The information about the area the owner provided was the best I have ever seen in a rental house----wonderful!!! Having bikes downstairs and being able to ride the paths through the vineyards was something we thoroughly enjoyed--what a bonus!! The house was especially well equipped for children and we loved that aspect of it--even though our children are grown. The pool, sauna, Ping-Pong table and even kids bikes and seats are a parent's dream. Everything went smoothly and we would recommend this property to anyone. It truly was a memorable week here and we hope to come back. Oh yes--and Nolay is so cute...and only 2 km away!! Thanks so much for a great vacation! Doug and Trudi, San Jose, California

Change is a charming little village, home to 8 winemakers! In the heart of Hautes Côtes de Beaune (one of the climats of burgundy which are in the Unesco World Heritage list), 20km south west of Beaune (Wine capital of Burgundy), 28km North west of Chalon (large town on the River Saone) and 25 km east of Autun (roman town and gateway to the Morvan Natural parc), Change is perfectly situated for exploring the best that Burgundy has to offer. The Canal du centre is just a few minutes away, where you can walk, cycle and horse ride along the bridle paths. Hikers can start in Change, either from the ‘Circuit de Trois Monts’ or the famous GR7. From the top of Mont des Trois Croix you will find a fantastic view. The 4(!) mountain bikes at the house will help you to experience the surrounding natural beauty that Change has to offer. For those who like a little bit of ‘Las Vegas’, Santenay with its castles and famous casino is just 5 km away.
